PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
DermistatTM Uses a Small Sample of Patient's Skin to Create an Autologous Skin Graft
DermistatTM, is one of the latest wound healing innovations by BioLab Sciences, a regenerative biotechnology company. Part of the MyOwn SkinTM suite of products, DermistatTM, uses a small sample of the patient’s healthy skin to create a gel-like substance that can create an autologous skin graft in 48 hours. Used for post-Mohs surgical wounds, burns, and other hard-to-heal wounds including venous leg ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers, DermistatTM is non-invasive, improves recovery time, is relatively painless, and creates only a small, superficial donor site wound.
|
Dr. John Del Monte |
"I was one of the first podiatrists to use DermistatTM," said John Del Monte, DPM, owner of Del Monte Podiatry. "I have had the opportunity to use it on post-amputations, diabetic foot ulcers, and venous leg ulcers, and it is demonstrating success with ulcers that have stalled in healing or not progressing. Once applied, it is showing an excellent take rate. It has demonstrated excellent healing rates on a majority of the ulcers I treat."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
3 Marketing Metrics for Medical Practices
There are a few metrics to consider when using marketing techniques to attract new patients to your practice.
1. The Calculation of the Cost Per Lead (CPL)
The CPL is a simple math equation.
The calculation consists of the campaign cost, or the marketing expenses divided by the number of patients who called the office for an appointment = patient cost per lead. For example, if the practice spent $2,000 on Google Ads over three months and received 500 calls from those ads, the cost per lead is $2,000 divided by 500 or $4.00 for each patient lead.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
There is a time and place for genetic testing. One example is looking for evidence of the Braca gene if there is breast cancer in your family and a positive result, interpreted by a licensed genetics counselor, can lead to significant medical decisions. These tests tend to be done based on blood tests. A genetic test for bunions, based on saliva? This seems questionable. Readers might wish to go to quackwatch.com and type in dubious genetic testing. It’s an old paper but might set things straight on whether to recommend this type of testing to our patients.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A |
From: Jeff Root
Unfortunately, Dr. Ressler, I have spoken to many people and patients who have gone to retail establishments who have paid over $1,000 for shoe inserts or "orthotics". Personally, I thought Dr. Stewart's video was spot on. People are often reluctant to schedule an appointment to see a podiatrist for foot pain but are comfortable walking into a retail establishment and seeking advice from a sales person with far less experience and credentials than a podiatrist. These customers are often sold several pairs of devices, costing well in excess of what a podiatrist would charge for a pair of well made, custom orthoses.
While there is a place for pre-fabricated, OTC devices, they are often highly overpriced when sold at some retail establishments. These same establishments typically run frequent commercials on television, thereby convincing consumers to come in for a free evaluation and a test fit where these individuals pay a hefty price for shoe inserts. Television commercials aren't cheap. It is not uncommon for consumers to pay $600 to $1,500 or more for one or more pairs of OTC devices that should only cost a few hundred dollars at best if they were purchased elsewhere or from a podiatrist. If you doubt this, I suggest you go to one of these retail establishments and pose as a patient with plantar fasciitis and see what the store has to offer. You may be surprised at the cost of their products and with their salesmanship.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B |
From: Jack Sasiene, DPM
Yes, Dr. Ressler, I have patients who come in routinely….one every few months…who have paid $1,200 or more, for a set of pre-fab devices from the ‘Good Feet Store”. They sell a “set of increasingly corrective devices” where the patient starts with the first and progresses to the last. It is very frustrating to see an “inexpensive” device sold for such an exorbitant price.
However, once proper biomechanics are explained and how a true custom device is cast (yes with plaster, don’t get me started on scanning!)….they are willing to pay a more reasonable, lower price and get relief of their issue.
Jack Sasiene, DPM, Texas City, TX

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Steven Selby Blanken, DPM
I was shocked to read Dr. Ressler’s comments about how he can’t believe patients of Dr. Stewart or any patient can be influenced into buying an over-the-counter orthotic for $1,400-$1,800. I don’t think he understands or knows anything about the company that is doing a very large TV campaign to sell their products. I assume the company showing these TV commercials are not in his location. Many people in the mid-Atlantic, especially in DC, Maryland, and Virginia have had multiple patients come to our office complaining about over-the-counter devices that they have acquired for various foot problems, that they got from a retail store.
It is very difficult to understand how a retail store can put these comments on TV and get patients to buy these devices to put in their shoes to treat...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3 |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
Dr. Kravitz notes that FL recently reduced its allowance of online CME to 8 per biennium, or just 20% of the 40 credits required. This is not true. The FL Board of Podiatric Medicine website currently states, as they have since 2020, that they are not limiting home study CME through the end of 2022. But aside from the 2020-2022 period of earning CME, FL has always limited online to 20%. After all, they have the SAM meeting to support and don’t wish to allow competition with it.
The state boards are free, as Dr. Kravitz notes, to set the limitations on online CME at any level that they choose, and though they are not democratic per se, they are responsive to the collective will of podiatrists in their state. Letting your state board know what you want is the ONLY way of getting limitations lifted and...
