PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips to Keep Patients Engaged Between Visits
It's important to note that engagement efforts don't have to bust the budget. Most tactics rely on tools you already own — your electronic health record's (EHR's) messaging templates, inexpensive survey apps, a smartphone camera, and five minutes of staff time.
5. Send condition-specific mini-newsletters
Segment patients by diagnosis (e.g., diabetes, plantar fasciitis, onychomycosis) and send short newsletters with tailored advice — like shoe-buying ideas or foot hygiene tips. Using EHR tags to target and personalize outreach significantly improves engagement and preventive care compliance.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Joseph L Carbone, DPM
Dr. Joseph L Carbone, passed away this June 23, 2025. He was a dedicated MIS podiatric physician and surgeon who practiced in Rochester NY for 42 years. Dr. Carbone was president of the American College of Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons. He served as president of the Monroe county legislation, Chief of Podiatry, Podiatric Residency Director, and Division Chief at all Rochester hospitals.
|
Dr. Joseph Carbone |
He was very active politically, fighting for a plenary license for podiatric physicians. A valued community member, his legacy of compassion and excellence will be deeply missed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STATE PODIATRY NEWS) |
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
I’d like to thank Dr. Chaskin for informing readership that a NY scope bill was passed by the House and Senate and is awaiting signature by the Governor to be put into law. Unfortunately, the bill falls short once again of helping out the average podiatrist in the state. If you are not board certified, the bill does not help you. If you are board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, the bill does not help you. If you are board certified by the American Board of Podiatric and Surgery in foot surgery, the bill does not help you. The bill only helps those and changes things for those with a standard ankle or advanced ankle permit.
It’s interesting how a non-board certified podiatrist can legally perform a triple arthrodesis, but can’t prescribe a topical steroid for a rash on the calf. However, in contrast, one must be board certified in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: James DiResta, DPM, MPH
While I don't disagree with the need for podiatry to visit more colleges to gain more exposure to potential applicants, I am more concerned about the watering down of our applicants' strength to schools of podiatric medicine. The problem as we have stated over and over is how can we possibly get enough qualified students is this diminishing pool. Schools of osteopathic medicine are growing exponentially. For example, have you ever heard of Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine? It has two schools in Tennessee now and a third opening in Florida in 2026. Did you know MSU has three campuses now of osteopathic medical students. How about Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine in Maryland? How about The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) now in four campuses!
There are 43 osteopathic schools listed but in reality there are presently 69 campuses and many more coming. The mean MCAT of all their schools for 2024 is 502.43 and falling. Several of the schools are below...
Editor's note: Dr. DiResta's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) -PART 1B |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
Kudos to Drs. Tomczak and now Saxena. I have written this in PM News before without any evidence, but as told to me from my son who recently graduated. He said a good number of students in his class should never have been allowed to be accepted in the first place. A fair number dropped out after the first and second year, but he felt that there were many in his class that just graduated who were barely hanging on and probably should have been weeded out.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) |
RE: Updating Podiatric Medical Education (Lawrence J. Kansky, DPM, JD)
From: H. David Gottlieb, DPM
There may be many things that need improvement in podiatry education and training but the residency experience, while not 100% close to uniform nor can it be, is not where to look. Over the many years I have been involved in training residents, I have noted a very large range in the knowledge and abilities of the students who rotate through the program. They are all nice and ethical, but the abilities and skills they arrive with, not only between schools but within schools, vary between minimally competent to almost fully competent. I do believe that the schools need to standardize their training especially since they are all now associated with a university.
Additionally, one should take complaints about current training with more than a grain of salt when they come from people with an axe to grind. A quick Internet search will help to identify those who may have an ulterior motive. I for one will not dignify them with a response.
H. David Gottlieb, DPM, Baltimore, MD
