NY Legislature Approves Modernized Scope Bill (Daniel Chaskin, DPM)
I’d like to thank Dr. Chaskin for informing readership that a NY scope bill was passed by the House and Senate and is awaiting signature by the Governor to be put into law. Unfortunately, the bill falls short once again of helping out the average podiatrist in the state. If you are not board certified, the bill does not help you. If you are board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, the bill does not help you. If you are board certified by the American Board of Podiatric and Surgery in foot surgery, the bill does not help you. The bill only helps those and changes things for those with a standard ankle or advanced ankle permit.
It’s interesting how a non-board certified podiatrist can legally perform a triple arthrodesis, but can’t prescribe a topical steroid for a rash on the calf. However, in contrast, one must be board certified in foot and ankle surgery with a permit of standard or advanced ankle to be permitted to treat a dermatitis of the calf.
I am happy for all those this bill will help as any advancement of the profession is a plus. As an ABPM Diplomate, I’d be curious if someone from the Board can enlighten readership. What, if any, action was taken to help increase our scope? In fairness, the same question should be directed to ABPS board whose members don’t hold ankle certificates or to any of the other boards I see ads for like ABLES or American Board of Podiatric Medical Specialties? Lastly, I think it’s comical the bill is referred to as a modernization bill as board certification should NOT dictate licensure. It’s a restrictive and discriminatory bill so call it what it really is.
