ID Podiatrist Recommends Athletic Shoes for Students

Brad Capawana, a doctor of podiatric medicine, says that most foot problems become more severe slowly over time. “It’s like listening to loud music,” Capawana said. “If you do it once or twice, it’s not going to ruin your ears. But if you do any of these things repetitively, over time, the wear and tear starts to show.”

Dr. Brad Capawana

Dr. Capawana said a basic athletic shoe is the best choice for students who spend a lot of time walking. “Athletic shoes are meant for pounding and they’re designed (to handle many) miles,” Capawana said.

OH Podiatrist Named Co-Chair of Alzheimer’s Association Walk

Robert Atwell, DPM and Kevin Mishey have been named Co-Chairs of the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Kick-Off Event at The Glenn A Gallagher Center on the Ohio Eastern Star Campus on June 26.  The Kick-Off Event is designed to prepare participants for the September 28, 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Robert Atwell

As a podiatric physician, Dr. Atwell stated he knows, “firsthand that it is critical to support the Alzheimer’s Association. The funds we raise help families and advance important research that could change the course of Alzheimer’s disease for future generations.” In Knox County alone, Alzheimer’s and related conditions affect nearly 1,400 people who receive direct care from more than 4,100 Knox County caregivers.

IL Podiatrist Is Contributor to Figure Skating Injuries Book

Doctors who treat figure skating injuries now have a reference source which they can turn to for help in diagnosing and further preventing the same injury. Ice skaters worldwide have been struggling with recurrent injuries for decades. Unlike other sports, figure skating has no governing body to supervise the development of guidelines for skating equipment, i.e. a skater’s skates. After more than three decades of working with competitive figure skaters, John Harmata, aka Mr. Edge has documented the relationship between proper boot fit, blade mounting, sharpening, and the role each of them plays in causing injuries to skaters.

Dr. Robert Weil

In his new book Anatomy of a Figure Skating Injury, he addresses the problems involving foot mechanics and explains why so many skaters are still prone to injuries and how to reduce or avoid them altogether. Two staunch supporters of Harmata's research are contributing consultants Robert A. Weil, DPM, personal podiatrist to current Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek, and prominent physical therapist Gina Pongetti.

PODIATRIC TRAGEDIES IN THE NEWS

Joe Louis Fight Anniversary Bittersweet for MI Podiatrist

The reminder that today is the 75th anniversary of Joe Louis’ epic defeat of Germany’s Max Schmeling in their return heavyweight world championship bout at Yankee Stadium on June 22, 1938, almost rips the heart out of Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum. It’s so bittersweet that Kirschenbaum, the former Michigan boxing commissioner and fight historian, fought hard to catch his breath when he talked about it Friday.

Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum finds burnt boxing gloves. (photo: Jennifer Shane)

Kirschenbaum, an amateur light-heavyweight champ, was a close friend of the Louis family. He minded the Joe Louis collection of artifacts, which he kept for years in his medical offices on Grand River in Detroit. But in April, in a tragic murder-suicide involving a former building employee, Park Medical Clinic and the Louis legacy went up in flames. Among items belonging to Kirschenbaum’s Louis museum was the left-hand glove he used to dispatch Schmeling in the first round before more than 70,000 spectators at Yankee Stadium. The bronzed glove was burned almost beyond recognition and found by Kirschenbaum the following day as he sifted through the smoldering remains.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW

ME Podiatrist Gets 8 Years for Illegally Prescribing Oxycodone

A former podiatrist who wrote drug prescriptions in exchange for cash and cocaine was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison. John Perry, 52, pleaded guilty on Dec. 4 to one count of drug conspiracy, one count of health care fraud and seven counts of unlawful distribution of oxycodone. Perry was a licensed podiatrist until 2011 and owned Atlantic Foot and Ankle in Portland until December 2010. In 2009 and 2010, he was responsible for the illegal distribution of more than 18,000 oxycodone pills, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

End Your Indecisiveness

Improve your decision-making ability by following the WRAP process:

  • Widen your options. It can be hard to commit if your choices are limited—because you feel limited. Add viable options by asking, “If I couldn’t choose either of these options, what would I do?”
  • Reality-test your assumptions. When you assume something, you often seek to justify that assumption rather than keep an open mind. Prevent that trap by asking others to disagree with the assumption. Also consider opposite viewpoints. Finally, test your theories.
  • Attain distance before deciding. Short-term emotion can cause decision paralysis. Instead, use the 10/10/10 analysis and ask yourself: “How will I feel about this decision 10 minutes from now? 10 months? 10 years?”
  • Prepare to be wrong. Fear of failure can cause you to hesitate. The plan you adopt could turn out to be the wrong one. That’s okay. You can adjust and overcome a poor decision.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)

Query: Will Podiatric Residencies Accept MDs?

I love this profession, but I am thinking that rather than send my son to podiatry school, I should send him to regular medical school and then have him do a podiatry residency after his first year MD internship. Is this feasible?, What would he need to do to apply, and would the residency directors welcome an MD taking a podiatry residency?

From: Keith Gurnick, DPM, Odin de los Reyes, DPM

This could  be an epidermoid inclusion cyst, possibly at the site of a blood test puncture during the initial after birth hospitalization.

Perform a 3-mm punch biopsy to rule out a malignant lesion. Better safe than sorry.

RE: EHR Hi Tech Audit (Ken Schenley)
From: Michael Brody, DPM

Mr. Schenley states that Certified Technology is not for everybody. I strongly disagree. The first thing we each need to understand is that Meaningful Use is NOT about us as doctors, Meaningful Use is about us as patients and all of the patients that we treat. Meaningful Use has been designed to be a benefit to patients on each and every level. As a result of this focus, there are tools available to us to allow us to have more information at our fingertips to make better clinical decisions at the point of care; for example alerts when we prescribe medications that might interact with other medications that a patient is taking. But let us look at the “BIG” picture.

With Meaningful Use, whenever a patient...

RE: EHR Hi Tech Audit (Ken Schenley)
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM

I tend to agree with the post from Ken Schenley.  First and foremost be pro-active. Welcome an audit. My background, education, and experience as a proud and practicing DPM dictates that each and every podiatrist is taken as a whole in the hearts and minds of the public. "We're all in the same boat." Podiatrists need to become connected to those who are users of new technology. Yet, enable yourself as a practicing podiatrist with tools to maintain some feeling of choice and independence.

Select tools that might enable yourself to maintain the movement yet not lose all sense of your right to continue to utilize your own judgment about your own practice, business, and medically-related practices. Otherwise, I know from experience (good and bad ones), you doctor, might be "adrift and out to sea without a rudder."

RE: Scholl Dean Praises School's Co-Founder
From: Hartley Miltchin, DPM

In 1982, as soon-to-be graduates from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine (ICPM), we as a graduating class, were informed that the college was changing its name to Scholl. As we progressed through our education from day one, we were taught how Scholl products do not really provide any medical care for foot problems. We were reminded that you do not buy prescription eye glasses off the shelf, as you would not buy orthotics off the shelf.

Our education involved two courses in biomechanics and much practice while in school to create the perfect cast, in order to prescribe an orthotic...

RESPONSES /COMMENTS (RESIDENCY SHORTAGE CRISIS)

RE: Unmatched Residency Placements Currently Stand at 92 (Michael Cherella, DPM)
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM

I disagree with the post from Michael Cherella, DPM. I think differences in practices is a healthy concept and way for our podiatry professionals. In fact, I still maintain that having several post-graduate levels and pathways is a better way to help make survival as a profession into the future more likely. It's called hybrid vigor in genetics. The more variation, the more the likelihood of survival.  We are not all exactly the same. It's a reason that "eugenics" would not work to create a brave new world of (surgical) perfection.

I never wanted to perform triples and other types of surgery in my practice, and I didn't intend for all this upon signing up for podiatry school. Yet, our profession moved toward this. Will these unmatched DPMs become somewhat (further) excluded or singled out in the future? I pray not.
