NYSPMA Nassau County Division Awards 2 Alvin J. Kanegis Memorial Scholarships
The New York State Podiatric Medical Association’s (NYSPMA) Nassau County Division awarded the Alvin J. Kanegis Memorial Scholarship awards to two New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) Students. The two 3rd year students are Nneamaka Obi Emeagwali Oliver and Navid Rostamian.

Both students have demonstrated excellence in academics and a desire to give back through volunteer work in the community through their places of worship. Each student was awarded five hundred dollars. In attendance was Dr. Kanegis’ wife, Judy.

PA Podiatrist Explains Tennis Star Nadal's Müller-Weiss Syndrome
American foot specialist Zachary Thomas, DPM explains why Rafael Nadal’s performances on the tennis court are so incredible from a medical point of view. Last Sunday, the 36-year-old triumphed for the 14th time at the French Open and at the same time expanded his Grand Slam successes to 22 tournaments. Nadal has been playing with a chronic foot injury, the so-called Müller-Weiss syndrome, for a long time. “As you get older, the scaphoid loses more and more blood; it starts to die. When that bone starts to die, it starts to crumble, right between the ankle and the bone of the metatarsal, the ball of the foot.”

Every time you step on it, this bone is hit like a nutcracker, says the doctor. “It keeps crumbling away until you end up with a huge dent in the middle part of your foot. That alone hurts enough.” This can also lead to arthritis in other areas, because the joint that the bone is involved in is the most important thing in the foot, especially in tennis, explains Dr. Thomas. “It’s not something that comes and goes – it’s a constant, excruciating pain that makes his Grand Slam record even more impressive.”

NY Podiatrist Volunteers at Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games
June 10-12th, 2022 saw the return of the Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games at The College of New Jersey. Athletes who participated in summer sports began practicing in April and competed at local and sectional competitions in order to advance to our annual state Summer Games.

Rob Conenello, DPM, Clinical Director of the Healthy Athletes Fit Feet program, led his team of volunteers to screen the 1,500 athletes. Dr. Conenello stated, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for both students and clinicians to learn from each other while serving the greatest athletes!”

APMA Board of Trustees Member David Alper, DPM, also a Board member for the American Diabetes Association - New England, presented at an information session about diabetes and related foot issues and care for first-term Massachusetts House members.

Joined by the past president of the Diabetes Nurse Educators of MA, Dr. Alper presented all the Legislators and their staffs with a “Diabetes 101” lecture, including the human and monetary cost of the disease, followed by an informative talk about podiatric medicine. A lengthy Q&A followed on prevention methods of limb amputation, taking both the ADA and APMA's role into account. From the questioning, it was clearly seen that the legislators left with a better understanding of the podiatrist’s role in medical and diabetic care of their constituents.

Biomechanics Summit '22 with AAPSM
Biomechanics Summit ’22 was held virtually this week with international attendees from Belgium, Italy and Canada. The speakers included former American Academy of Podiatric Sports medicine (AAPSM) past presidents Steve Pribut, DPM and Richard Blake, DPM, and AAPSM fellow Ben Pearl, DPM, who put together the summit and panel. Also speaking were Benno Nigg, PhD from the Calgary Human Performance Lab and Yong Li, PhD, a 3-D print engineer from OLT Footcare.
A reporter from the New York Times also was at the Summit as part of her story on human locomotion and the role of shoes and insoles. Dr. Pearl said his goals were "to get more collaboration with our international biomechanics colleagues and make emerging biomechanics more accessible to podiatrists that are not keeping up with the latest biomechanical breakthroughs."

Practices can provide protected time for employees to access employee assistance programs or other mental health services and reiterate the confidential nature of those services.

Addressing Physician Burnout
Here are some actions for practices to curb physician and medical staff burnout.
3. Build a commitment to the health and safety of your staff.
Practices should commit to health worker well-being at the highest levels of leadership. Practices should assess burnout, build in time for leave for workers, have zero tolerance for violence, and ensure workers have adequate personal protective equipment.

RE: The Passing of Robert Brody, DPM
Word has been received of the death of Robert A. Brody, a podiatrist who lived year round on Sulky Circle in East Hampton. Dr. Brody, who died of cancer in New York City on April 18, was 73. Dr. Brody was a graduate also of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Brody maintained a private podiatric practice in Brooklyn for 40 years. Later, in East Hampton, he took up real estate, and became a salesman with the Halstead firm for a few years.

Years ago, dehydrated alcohol was one of the least expensive injectables and since we dilute it, one order lasted a long time. Now things have changed; not only has it become very expensive but we have to search high and wide for companies that supply it. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Many of the compounding pharmacies will make up a vial for us. We use Akina Pharmacy.

I thought I’d comment on people in our profession (including Dr. Rosenblatt, for whom I have great respect) referring to MD medicine as allopathic and then putting ‘podiatric medicine’ in a separate category, as if podiatric medicine wasn’t allopathic medicine. There are a certain finite number of medical theories out there, including allopathic, homeopathic, chiropractic, native American Indian, pan-theistic naturopathy, witch doctors, Eastern Indian Ayurvedic medicine, and a few others.
Allopathic medicine has as its basis the idea of pathology from disease state: bacteria, virus, spirochete, genetic dyscrasia, prion, etc. Unless I missed something critical in medical school, that’s the disease model we in podiatry follow as well. As such, podiatric medicine IS allopathic medicine.

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, North Chicago, IL is home to the Chicago Medical School and the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. They continue to refuse to allow podiatry students to take pediatrics, psychiatry, or Ob/Gyn courses, the same courses that are being taught to their medical students.
This is what we are up against. I do not understand why the alumni would stand for this?

Regarding the recruitment of students for matriculation at the colleges of podiatry, consider the following: what is the net effect of saying "foot and ankle surgeon," or "I attended medical school," or "American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery," or "Ohio Foot and Ankle Society," or having "Dr. Jones" rather than "DPM" on your coat? If you are not proud of the accomplishments and representations of the DPM degree, why would you expect others to dedicate themselves to the commitment necessary to obtain that degree?

There is an elephant in the living room that none of us is addressing. Podiatry has changed since I entered the profession 40 years ago, but so has the business of medicine. Forty years ago, when an MD or DO finished his or her training, they would either start or buy into a private practice. Today, private practices in all facets of medicine are becoming extinct. Corporations and hospitals are taking them over, rendering physicians employees of larger entities. Most MD and DO grads today have no wish to enter private practice but apply to and are accepted at well-paying jobs either at hospitals or in outpatient settings. These same businesses are also hiring PAs and other non-MD, -DO professions at huge starting salaries.
My next door neighbor completed a two-year program in some non-doctoral pulmonary field and was offered $150,000 as a starting salary. Bottom line: Can we guarantee a graduate with a DPM, completing a residency, a high paying job as the MD, DO and ancillary medical world can? If the answer is "no, maybe, or perhaps," that explains why our applicant pool is shrinking.

When I was in podiatry school, there was an unremitting negative chorus from some students. It was tiresome and sad. Worse, it was mostly inaccurate. When I graduated, hospital privileges were the main lack of parity. That problem ended. Lack of parity still exists in some forms. But it didn’t affect me.
Allopathic physicians don’t have everything. Not only did they themselves die taking care of Covid patients, but also were not allowed to prescribe drugs their plenary license permitted. I had never seen this before. I’m not arguing against parity, which by the way, we earned. But I am not a...

Who wants to be a podiatrist? Excuse the levity, but I do. It was how I met my wife. Many years ago, as a second year student, I met a cute girl in a bar in Princeton, NJ. She was working as a medical secretary for a cardiology research group at Squibb. They were working on a project for the beta blocker Corgard.
My friend introduced us and said I was going to be a chiropractor. I corrected him. She said to me, “Podiatrist? Is that a REAL doctor?” I said, “Yes”; she then quizzed me, “What’s tachycardia?” Without missing a beat, I replied, “I get tachycardia thinking you are going home with me tonight.” We’ve been married 39 years.
