When I was in podiatry school, there was an
unremitting negative chorus from some students. It
was tiresome and sad. Worse, it was mostly
inaccurate. When I graduated, hospital privileges
were the main lack of parity. That problem ended.
Lack of parity still exists in some forms. But it
didn’t affect me.
Allopathic physicians don’t have everything. Not
only did they themselves die taking care of Covid
patients, but also were not allowed to prescribe
drugs their plenary license permitted. I had never
seen this before.
I’m not arguing against parity, which by the way,
we earned. But I am not a good example of the
“failure of podiatry.” I faced early retirement
from my success and found the profession the best
possible choice for me: I got my own office based
surgical center accredited by Medicare (yes, DPMs
can do this) and received additional payments
along with the surgeries. My business model was
mostly “small surgical procedures” that did not
require a long time to recover from, orthotics,
physical therapy, dermatology and sports medicine.
I had so many new patients that I faced clinical
exhaustion. I actually looked forward to RFC, so I
didn’t have to concentrate planning for 3+
surgeries/day. This is not idle boast. Many other
DPM’s have a similar story.
I understand the small cadre of angry ex-
podiatrists who were not suited to this. They
regard it entirely the fault of the profession.
They make a lot of commotion online to dissuade
potential new applicants. I don’t deny that they
made a bad choice for themselves. Is it the fault
of podiatry? Maybe in some cases. But I have lived
long enough to learn that there are no perfect
solutions. Parity will solve some problems, and
though I support it, will create others.
You may not always enjoy your world of MD parity.
Government and corporate medicine formed an
alliance to remove employment rights of
physicians. The National Data Bank has perfected
blacklisting. DPMs suffered sham peer review, but
only a tiny number. DPMs don’t present the same
“threat” to Government as MDs. Recently, an MD/JD
was arrested over her “speech” on January 6th.
I worked with MDs who were sham peer reviewed. I
had to tell them not to allow a gun in the house
while they go through the process of being ground
up by corporate medicine. You probably do not hear
about that from podiatry deniers. Sometimes we
don’t always appreciate what we have. Yes, we
don’t have some of their advantages. But there is
also an advantage to keeping your head down.

DMU-CPMS Announces the 2024 Alumni of the Year and Rising Star Honorees
The College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University (DMU-CPMS) has announced the 2024 Alumni of the Year and Rising Star honorees. Joshua M. Vest, DPM '08, a podiatric physician, is this year's College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery 2024 Alumnus of the Year. Known for his dedication to educating others about podiatric medicine, Dr. Vest mentors medical students and residents and leads the podiatric surgery department at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Kelsey Millonig, DPM, MPH '17 has been awarded the Rising Star Award. She led the Global Health Student Club and participated in service trips to rural Honduras and Uganda as a student. Dr. Millonig was also president of DMU's American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons chapter. She founded and served as president of Podiatric Medicine Advocacy, now part of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
