Nassau Division of NYSPMA Presents Alvin Kanegis Scholarships
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, Craig Herman, DPM, President of the Nassau County Division of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) presented two annual Alvin J. Kanegis, DPM Scholarships to the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) students: 2025 graduate Oren Sadeh, DPM and current student Sara Baasar. Both students exemplify the qualities and characteristics that Dr. Kanegis lived and practiced by.

She completed her reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgical fellowship at Ankle and Foot Care Centers/Northside Regional Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio in 2018, and completed her residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia in 2017.

He is Adjunct Surgical Faculty for the group and now a podiatrist with BASS Medical Group in his hometown, Palo Alto, CA.

Zero-Budget Staff Motivators that Beat a Pay Raise
These cost-effective strategies can boost employee morale and retention in medical practices, addressing turnover without breaking the budget.
1. Say “thank you,” loudly and in technicolor
Public praise is free but priceless. Instead of a vague “good job,” spotlight the exact behavior you want copied: “Ana stayed late to troubleshoot a claim and saved the patient a $300 bill.” Physicians Practice Pearls expert Neil Baum, MD, calls the morning huddle “the best two minutes you can spend with your staff.” A quick shout-out there—or on a break-room whiteboard—tells people you notice the details. One primer on rewarding excellent patient care notes that public recognition lowers turnover even when bonuses are off the table.
Keep a stack of blank note cards on your desk. Hand-written kudos feel personal and often end up taped to monitors for months.

RE: Physicians and Non-Physicians: What are the differences?

This AMA news article is the best evidence that the 3-year residency model is the correct educational curriculum for training podiatric physicians and surgeons. It appears that we are (currently) no longer on the AMA list of lesser trained, non-physician providers. Whatever issues remain with respect to our post-graduate training model, the adherence to the MD/DO training timeframe has given gravitas to our commitment to excellence and patient care.
