UT Podiatrist Featured on Antiques Roadshow
When Annemarie Edwards, DPM, of Riverton showed up with a personal, handwritten letter from former president Ronald Reagan, Kenneth Gloss from Antiques Roadshow was a little taken aback in part due to the subject of the letter: shoes. “It’s the first time, I have to admit, that I’ve done anything about a president’s shoes,” he said with a laugh.

Dr. Annemarie Edwards with letter from Ronald Reagan |
And the story behind the letter didn’t disappoint either. In the 1980s, while attending podiatry school in Philadelphia, Annemarie often studied at a museum on the sixth floor that had a wide variety of shoes on display, including a pair that once belonged to Nancy Reagan. “I decided her shoes looked pretty lonely without his,” she said. So she wrote a letter to the president. To Annemarie’s even greater delight, along with the letter, the former president sent a pair of his custom-made shoes to accompany his wife’s at the museum.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Sandal Features to Look for if You Have Plantar Fasciitis: CA Podiatrist
Eighty-five percent of people with plantar fasciitis exacerbate the condition by wearing unsupportive footwear, so it’s crucial to be mindful of your shoes. The good news is that podiatrists still recommend sandals, even if you have plantar fasciitis. “Sandals are fine to wear if you have plantar fasciitis, but there are certain features to look out for to help support the foot,” says Mark Razzante, DPM, Dean of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Samuel Merritt University College of Podiatric Medicine.
|
Dr. Mark Razzante |
“Ideally, you should get some sort of heel counter or heel cup, compared to something entirely flat. That'll help stabilize your rear foot as you're walking," says Dr. Razzante.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Zero-Budget Staff Motivators that Beat a Pay Raise
These cost-effective strategies can boost employee morale and retention in medical practices, addressing turnover without breaking the budget.
2. Invite staff to hack the workflow.
Front-desk teams see caller logjams first; billers spot denial patterns in real time. Bring them into the fix. Start simple: Post a sticky-note to review ideas every Friday and act quickly on the easy wins. Seeing suggestions adopted fuels the next wave of improvements.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM THE DOCTORLINE.COM |
Query: Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy ESWT
Do any doctors have any thoughts on Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy ESWT with regards to whether it is covered by traditional Medicare? If answer could relate to New Jersey Medicare, this would be helpful. If covered, what diagnosis codes and procedure codes are used. Also, are there requirements for alternative treatments to be tried first and to fail before Medicare will cover the ESWT. Or, is this a strictly cash payment and not covered by Medicare at all?
Response from thedoctorline.com: ESWT for Novitas Medicare who covers the State of NJ does not cover ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy) for various musculoskeletal conditions, including plantar fasciitis. This is because Medicare considers ESWT experimental or investigational and insufficient evidence of its effectiveness has been established. So, it is a cash service.
David Freedman, DPM, Silver Spring, MD Additional coding and billing questions and responses can be found at thedoctorline.com

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Regarding totally free Medicare verification websites, I cannot stress enough signing up for your local MAC and all four DME MAC portals. To reiterate, these are totally free and provide way more than just verification. They provide the old Social Security based number to the current National Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (NMBI), deductible status for the majority of patients, same or similar for many DME items, and financial information. Most also provide a way for you to submit appeals (which in the very near future will be the only way to submit them), and even in some cases claim submission.
While consolidated billing information is also found on these portals, it is not 100% reliable as it is dependent on the information received from Social Security and that is often a month or so lagging behind. Also, the patient's enrollment into Medicare Advantage plans also does show up, but again especially at the beginning of the year, or for patients who are new to the area in which you practice. They may have switched from either traditional fee-for-service to a MCR Part C plan and that may not be up to date, especially if it was very recent.
To state for the third time is not overstating it to all readers. Enroll in both your local MCR Part B carrier and all four DME MAC portals. These are free!
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY
