ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT
IL Podiatrist Plays a Key Role in GPS26

Matthew Garoufalis, DPM, past president of both the APMA and the Internation Federation of Podiatrists was a member of the organizing committee for the FIP GPS26 conference held in Copenhagen in April. He also delivered three presentations during the conference, as well as chairing several sections throughout the conference.

Dr. Matthew Garoufalis

Dr. Garoufalis' first lecture,  “International Standardization of Podiatric Practice,” looked at the future growth of podiatric medicine globally. He also spoke on “Using Intermittent Cyclical Pressurized Oxygen to durably heal challenging wounds,” and gave the “U.S. Perspective on Limb Salvage Surgery.” The conference was a huge success, with over 800 attendees from over 36 countries. GPS 28 is scheduled for Dublin, Ireland in the spring of 2028.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
8 red flags that signal your billing is leaving money on the table

From clean claim rates to contract negotiations, these warning signs could mean your practice is leaving thousands in revenue uncollected.

5. Your front desk is not collecting co-pays at check-in

Point-of-service collection is consistently the highest-yield moment in the revenue cycle.

Collecting a copay at check-in costs nothing; collecting it on the back end through statements, collection calls, or a third-party agency costs time and often a percentage of the balance. Track your point-of-service collection rate and set a measurable target. Most high-performing practices aim for 95% or better.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Ira R. Cohen, DPM

My condolences but you made it much longer than I did. I ended up putting cameras in each room. Staff did quick glance during each patient turnover. Sadly, some patients didn't care. We would call and give them an opportunity to return the instruments. Most did, a few didn't. We informed those who refused that we would call the police. Sadly, this is a cost of doing business.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC RESEARCH)
RE: Podiatric Research (Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM, DVM)
From: David Secord, DPM

I noted a palpable disinterest in research when I did my time at Temple. Even though I spent a great deal of time at the Gait Lab under the guidance of Howard Hillstrom, PhD (who is now at the Hospital For Special Surgery in NYC) and was involved in seven different projects which were published in peer-reviewed journals, there were very few others among my peers, outside of James Furmato, DPM, MS, PhD.

Although I wasn’t in attendance at a meeting in Toronto to see the reaction, a study we did upon instrumentation calibration concluded with the idea that if you aren’t constantly calibrating an instrument before you are using it, the data you are collecting is worthless and—therefore—the conclusions you are drawing, based upon that worthless data are, themselves, worthless. From what I was told, all jaws dropped...

Editor's note: Dr. Secord's extended-length letter appears here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) -PART 1A
From: Jeff Pinsky, DPM

In response to Dr. Teitelbaum’s response to Dr. Kesselman’s look back and musings on routine foot care’s non-coverage by Medicare as a contributing factor to podiatry’s perceived lesser status among medical professions, I felt I had to jump in. I started practice 40+ years ago as well. I did lots of “routine foot” care while in practice. Most was under the non-covered guidelines from Medicare. Even though a minority had class findings, I could fill a stadium with those who did. Notes were well documented (back in the days before A.I. note generation and scribes) with the why and what of each visit, and I never had an issue with Medicare denials or inquiries. I was never looked down on by my MD and DO peers. Yep, we considered each other as equals, as were the local dentists; audiologists, not so much. I think it’s the retail aspect that put them “one rung down the professional ladder”.

And about dentistry: at least in my practice region, there were more unmet routine dental needs than routine foot care needs. Medicare’s non-coverage of dental care doesn’t affect dentistry’s status one bit. We need to feel no shame in doing routine foot care to reduce pain, discomfort, and risk for our patients.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) -PART 1B
From: Ivar Roth, DPM, MPH

Dr. Teitelbaum makes many good points that make sense. As medicine's stepchild, we are treated as second class citizens in terms of the medical bureaucracy. But cutting corns calluses and nails is something that could be accomplished by the individual or nail technicians in salons in certain states. If the door to insurance was opened up, everybody would want that “FREE” insurance covered treatment. This is why I think the current process really does make sense and allows the individuals to make that choice if they are willing to pay for our services.

At my office, we offer medical pedicures and we are really busy doing a great service to the community and making a nice living at the same time. I encourage all podiatrists to rethink routine care as medical pedicures and I think you will be very happy with the results.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEETING NEWS)
From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM

It is with tremendous pride and heartfelt admiration that I write to congratulate my dear colleague and friend, Dr. Jack Morgan, on receiving the Los Angeles County Star Award — and remarkably, for the second time. This recognition is not merely well-deserved; it is, in many ways, long overdue. Jack Morgan has been a beacon for our profession for decades. To the thousands of podiatric physicians across this country who have had the privilege of crossing his path — whether in a lecture hall, at a national meeting, or simply in conversation — he has been nothing short of a guiding light. His unwavering positive attitude, his sharp eye for business acumen, and his genuine passion for elevating the podiatric profession have made him a true harbinger of what our specialty can and should be. He was a mentor to me, a dear friend and colleague, and through that relationship, and through witnessing his leadership firsthand, he became an inspiration to me as well.

That is the reach of a man like Jack Morgan — his influence does not stop at those he directly teaches. It ripples outward, touching careers, shaping practices, and lifting the entire profession. To receive an honor of this caliber once is remarkable. To receive it twice speaks to a sustained legacy of excellence and community service that few can claim. Jack, on behalf of the podiatric community — from Florida to California and every state in between — congratulations. You have always made us proud, and this award reflects the esteem in which you are held by all who know you and all whose lives you have touched.
