NYCPM Celebrates 100% Student Match
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) celebrated Match Day on Friday, March 15th. 100% of eligible students matched to a residency program nationwide. The celebration was led by Michael Trepal, DPM, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean and Chief Academic Officer.
|
|
(L-R) Dean Lisa Lee, Chiara Mercado, and Dean Michael Trepal |
Per tradition, each student put in a dollar into a jar as their names were randomly called for their residency match envelope. This year's winner Chiara Mercado won in many ways by matching into her first choice program and claiming the jar full of money.

APMA HOD Passes One Certifying Board Proposition
Delegates from across the country gathered this past weekend for the 2024 House of Delegates meeting. The assembled leaders discussed, debated, and voted upon issues ranging from unification of certifying boards to supervision of physician extenders. "We are particularly delighted that the house was able to pass Policy Proposition 2-24, which codifies APMA's support for the unification of the two CPME-recognized certifying boards, resulting in a single, unified certifying board," said Lawrence A. Santi, DPM, APMA president. This proposition also articulated APMA's support for the cessation of the issuance of a CAQ in surgery.
|
|
Peggy Tresky |
The house honored APMA Executive Director and CEO James R. Christina, DPM, at his final House of Delegates meeting before his retirement on March 31, and thanked him for his tireless commitment to the profession, its members, and its patients. Dr. Christina presented the Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM, Leadership Award to Peggy S. Tresky, MA, APMA senior director, Communications, Marketing, and Membership, in recognition of her 14 years of dedicated service to APMA and the profession.

TN Podiatrist Convicted of $4M Foot Bath Fraud Scheme
A federal jury convicted a Tennessee podiatrist today for a scheme to defraud Medicare and TennCare by prescribing and dispensing medically unnecessary foot bath medications and obtaining millions of dollars in reimbursements. According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Nathan Lucas, DPM, 59, of Memphis, owned and operated a podiatry clinic, Advanced Foot & Ankle Care of Memphis LLC, as well as two in-house pharmacies. Lucas regularly prescribed antibiotic and antifungal drugs to be mixed into a tub of water for patients to soak their feet.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
6 Strategies for Back Office Billing
The front desk staff is essential for checking in patients, collecting copays, and verifying insurance. But there’s more to the story, and out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind. Much of the heavy lifting for billing and collections is done in the back office, so it’s even more important to have a deep bench of talent, says Tammie Olson, manager and coding and compliance strategist at Management Resource Group.
1. Train select employees to set up payment plans
Often, the front desk will discover the need to set up a payment plan with self-pay patients or patients with an outstanding balance. But the actual arrangement is made by the back office staff. It’s crucial these plans be consistent and fair for all patients. You need to have one or two people in your back office who know how to correctly set up plans. Training back office staff will also alleviate the pressure on the front desk to make decisions about waiving payments-or let their emotions clout their decision-making.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD) - PART 1A | |
RE: APMA Policy Proposition 2-24: One Board in Podiatric Medicine & Surgery
From: Richard M. Maleski, DPM, RPh
If there is only one Board for board certification in our profession, and it is going to include both surgery and medicine, then how can non-surgical podiatrists get Board Certified? There are DPMs who don't want to do surgery. There are DPMs who simply do not have an aptitude for surgery. There are DPMs who cannot do surgery due to physical impairment. How could they possibly pass the surgical portion of the new Board if they aren't in the OR, or don't stay current with surgical academic material, or just don't have adequate experience to retain their skill?
I know colleagues who fit into all 3 of those categories, and thankfully, there has been ABPM certification available to them, which has allowed them access to hospital non-surgical staff privileges and inclusion into insurance...
Editor's note: Dr. Maleski's extended-length letter can be read here.

RE: APMA Policy Proposition 2-24: One Board in Podiatric Medicine & Surgery
From: Jack Levenson, DPM
Lee Rogers, DPM mentioned at this weekend's APMA House of Delegates that he would stop the issuance of the ABPM CAQ in surgery. I would just like to point out that this would mean that no further surgery CAQs should be issued regardless of whether a candidate has already taken or registered for the exam. I believe this point should be made clear as continuing to issue these certifications would prevent ABFAS's ability to consider ANY negotiation for one unified board.
Jack Levenson, DPM, NYC, NY

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) | |
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH
I read Dr. Kelly John’s explanation for toe cramps. It seems she missed the mark by not mentioning the number 1 reason why patients get toe cramps or see podiatrists for toe cramps which is a neuroma.
This was an opportunity to inform the public about this common problem. Remember, we are podiatrists first and should inform the public from our specialty’s perspective.

From: Shawna Shapero, Jerry Peterson, DPM
As much as I’ve come to appreciate PICA’s new Chief Medical Officer, the powerhouse, Dr. Luke (Chick) Cicchinelli, I’m going to miss Dr. Taubman very much. His impact on the podiatric profession is profound and far-reaching, even touching his industry friends. I am grateful for his wisdom and gentle, sage advice over the years. He has led by example; his leadership has inspired so many. Wishing Dr. Taubman and his family the very best in their next chapter.
Shawna Shapero, VP Corporate Relations, Bako Diagnostics
Ross Taubman has always been about helping and supporting his profession and his fellow podiatric physicians. His leadership stands out among our best leaders. Enjoy your retirement Ross, you’ve earned it and so has Betsy. My best and thanks to you both.
Jerry Peterson, DPM
