Podiatrists Discuss Common Procedures For Plantar Fasciitis
For those who require surgery for plantar fasciitis, there are two common procedures: 1. Instep plantar fasciotomy - Lori Barnett, DPM explains that, with this procedure, a small incision is made on the bottom of the foot. The doctor will clip a small portion of the plantar fascia to release it and ease pain. It’s an outpatient procedure, so there’s no overnight stay in the hospital. And it’s quick, anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes, Dr. Barnett says. That’s my go-to and I’ve had good results with it,” she explains. Research suggests that the success rate is high, with one study putting it at over 90%. The most common complication, according to the study authors, was scarring.

2. Endoscopic plantar fasciotomy (EPF) - “With this minimally invasive procedure, a tiny incision is made on the inside of the heel. Using a small camera to visualize the plantar fascia band, part of the ligament is released, relieving abnormal tension caused by plantar fasciitis. This ultimately decreases the inflammation and pain in the heel, allowing patients to return to their activities of daily living faster with minimal to no complications,” explains Garrett Nguyen, DPM.

ABFAS Announces 2024 Stone Award Recipients
On February 1, 2024, ABFAS President Nicole A. Bauerly, DPM, DABFAS presented the Michael L. Stone, DPM Outstanding Professional Conduct Awards to nine exceptional individuals. The awards ceremony took place in Tampa, FL, as part of the ABFAS 50th Annual Business Meeting. The award goes to a graduating senior from each college or school who exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism, deportment, and ethics in their interactions with peers, patients, professors, and staff. Each college or school selects their winner. The recipients receive a plaque commemorating the achievement, and a $2,000 cash award.

WesternU Podiatry Student is First Female NLL Official
Carmen Massel is a trailblazing history maker. On December 29th, 2023, Massel became the first woman in league history to be on the officiating crew for an National Lacrosse League (NLL) game. Massel was the shot clock operator for the match between the San Diego Seals and the Rochester Knighthawks in San Diego that night. Massel gives it her all whenever she steps on the floor in pinstripes. It is a dream come true to be out there wearing the whistle, but it has come at a cost. Her tireless efforts covering the action up and down the floor have caused chronic issues to her feet and ankles. To date, Massel has had 11 surgeries on her lower extremities.

Her various injuries have inspired Massel to pursue a career in podiatry. She is in the first year of a seven-year track (four years of podiatric medical school and three years of residency) at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA, to become a foot doctor. By 2030, Massel will know how to fix the feet and ankle issues she has endured.

Canadian Podiatrist Raises Concerns Over Referral System
A Moose Jaw podiatrist, along with the opposition New Democratic Party, is concerned about our healthcare referral system. Ata Stationwala, BSc, DCh practices at the Moose Jaw Podiatry Clinic, located right next door to the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health and Moose Jaw North Member of the Legislative Assembly Tim McLeod.

Dr. Stationwala, a past president of the Saskatchewan College of Podiatrists, said he has spoken to McLeod on numerous occasions in the past about the fact that podiatrists cannot make direct referrals to healthcare specialists. “Should I or one of my colleagues see the need for patients to have a consultation with a specialist such as an orthopedic surgeon, we are required to request the consultation via the family physician. In short, this can cause delays in access to care,” said Stationwala during a press conference at his office on Friday.

OR Podiatrist Faces New Sex Abuse Charges Amid Ongoing Investigation
A Portland podiatrist is facing new sex abuse charges after additional victims came forward, according to the Portland Police Bureau. Since KATV last reported on this incident, seven women have come forward and reported that Dr. Brian M. Bowen, 49, sexually abused them. Police say the alleged abuse happened between Aug. 2022 and Oct. 2023, during podiatry exams at Eastside Foot & Ankle.

5 Ways AI is Different in Healthcare
While AI undoubtedly will help clinicians become more efficient and improve patient outcomes, the sector differs from other fields in these important ways.
4. Vast quantities of data
Generative AI tools like ChatGPT have caused many people to rethink their previous assumptions about the limitations of the technology. These tools are now capable of producing writing and visual art that is, in some cases, difficult to distinguish from content created by humans, and many businesses are racing to incorporate them into their operations.
However, this rush is also making it clear that AI sometimes struggles with unstructured data. (ChatGPT has quickly become infamous for simply making things up.) By contrast, the vast quantities of population-level healthcare data generated by remote monitoring tools are a perfect fit for more established AI use cases like data analytics.
