RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ACFAS NEWS)
From: Joan Oloff, DPM
It is with great disappointment that I read the final selection for nominees for the ACFAS board that the nominating committee put forth. Women in medicine have made great strides since my early days in residency. I was questioned in a residency interview regarding my ability to be a doctor since I would likely have babies and stop working. In my final week of residency, one of my residency directors asked to see me in his office. His topic of conversation was to explain to me why he didn’t think women should/could be doctors.
I realized early in my professional career that women needed to have a seat at the table. I began my career in academics, but transitioned into private practice later on. It is with great pride that I observe the amazing, talented women who have taken leadership positions in podiatry. There are a plethora of talented women who could greatly contribute to this board.
Women deserve to have a seat at the table and a seat on the board of ACFAS. We are starting to see great awareness of the benefit of board diversity in the C-Suite world. Studies have been done that show the benefit of this diversity in the business world. This is about more than bridging the gap in gender equity. Research shows that women have more desired leadership qualities than men, perform higher than their male counterparts in resilience, self-development, honesty, and integrity. I promise you ACFAS would be better off, as well. This takes making conscious choices. We can and need to do better.

Congratulations Chris. Well-deserved for your years of efforts on behalf of our profession. Your participation in getting the ankle bill in Oregon is still remembered as invaluable in our 11th hour meeting in the governor’s office.

I would like to thank Patrick for the thoughtful response to my letter. My intention was to make sure we continue to acknowledge and work together to improve diversity within our profession, particularly within our surgical subspecialty. This is not merely for the benefit of the women in our profession. The profession as a whole will benefit. I am grateful for the strides that have been made, but we have a long way to go.
Women physicians lead complicated lives. While they have the ability to provide invaluable contributions, they may be reluctant to step forward. I am hopeful that the committee will continue to find success in recruiting the many qualified women in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ACFAS NEWS) - PART 1B
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
ACFAS has had and continues to benefit from female leadership, including the recent ACFAS presidency. Academic recognition and leadership positions are a meritocracy. In my opinion, no leadership position in ACFAS should be awarded based upon any criteria other than demonstrated excellence. If the ACFAS BOD fails to include a recently nominated slate which happens to not include a female, and the basis for such nominations was legitimate, then I say so be it. Many of the schools (medical and podiatry) are greater than 50% female in constitution. There is therefore every opportunity for female podiatrists to establish bona fides by committee participation, publishing, teaching, and thus advancing to nomination for the BOD of ACFAS, or in fact any podiatry-affiliated organization. Perhaps Dr. Oloff might devote equivalent time to ACFAS as she does designing shoes, advance in the organization, and participate in magnifying the role of female podiatrists in the organization. Whether it is APMA, ACFAS, my state organization, or my personal healthcare provider, I want the most qualified individual regardless of their individual identifying characteristics. RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ACFAS NEWS) - PART 1A
From: Patrick (PJ) Andrus, CAE
Thank you to Dr. Oloff for raising an important issue. The College agrees that advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion is imperative; additional information that should be considered when reading Dr. Oloff’s letter:
• The 2022 Board Nominations Committee, Chaired by Thanh Dinh, DPM, FACFAS, Immediate Past President of ACFAS, conducted a detailed review of all applicants for the Board, including an interview process to thoroughly assess every candidate. Last year, Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS was elected to the Board of Directors and Dr. Dinh still serves on the Board. Unfortunately, the College received zero applications from female members this year. We recognize our role to improve that statistic and accept a goal of increasing the diversity of...

I remember Scott Malay visiting my office before he started podiatry school. This is an example why we need to encourage young people to enter our profession; seeing someone who has become an outstanding member of our podiatry community.
Paul Taylor, DPM, Silver Spring, MD
Dr. Malay started out as my professor and I knew then he was the real deal. We then became friends and colleagues. Scot is the epitome of what this award represents and should be proud that he was recognized for his achievements and dedication to the profession, and all of the research he has either fostered or participated in. Well deserved!
