Feet Get Larger With Age: MD Podiatrist
Even if you didn’t put on weight, chances are you went up at least a half-size in the last decade. Feet become both longer and wider as you age because the tendons and ligaments that link tiny bones lose elasticity.
|
Dr. Timothy Swartz |
Get your feet measured at least once a year so you know your true size, suggests Dr. Timothy Swartz, chief of podiatry of Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic region. Wearing shoes that don’t fit properly can cause more than discomfort — they can create or fast-track bunions and painful blisters, among other issues.

UK Podiatrist to Lead Team to Calais ‘Jungle’
A podiatrist will lead a team of medical professionals on a trip to Calais to set up a clinic to help treat refugees living there. Simon Miles, 34, from Cottesmore, will travel to the camp known as the Jungle with about eight colleagues in January. The team of professionals and students will hold a series of free clinics to treat people living in the camp.
|
Simon Miles |
“We’ve also got a couple of students coming with us,” said Simon. “I wanted to give them experience. I thought it would be really good for them to get involved with a project and have something on their CVs.” The decision to make the trip was easy for Simon. “You see the stuff on the news,” he said.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
Santa Visits VA Podiatrist
T'was the night before Christmas and all through the office not a staff member was working not even the Doctor, the x-rays were hung by the light box with care, with hopes that the toes were healing out there. We all huddled around our treatment room for a delight and poof he was there! Saint Nick was a sight! All dressed up in holiday red, ready for his long winter’s flight.

Santa visits office of Dr. Steven Gordon |

NJ Podiatrist's License Revoked for Sexual Misconduct
The medical license of a borough-based podiatrist has been revoked after he allegedly violated a temporary suspension that was in place because of charges of sexual misconduct and inappropriate and lewd behavior. Dr. Frederick Weintraub agreed to the punishment, which was effective Dec. 3, and will not be allowed to reapply for a medical license, according to the Office of the Attorney General.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Improving the Performance of Medical Practice Staff - Part 4
4. Could some employees benefit from coaching?
Coaching is a one-on-one empowerment process that can build employee confidence and improve performance, enabling employees to think differently and assume new roles. Coaching is different from training and it's useful when you are grooming employees to move into supervisory positions or when you are expanding someone's role. A coach acts as a sounding board, and supports employees by helping them to take action and improve.
Whether you conduct the coaching meetings, or you hire an outside coach, it's an employee benefit that bodes well for both productivity and profitability. It can also create a succession planning process that develops front-line staff into supervisors or managers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: Todd Lewis, DPM
Dr. Mullen, I apologize if my message came across as disrespectful to you and our peers. That wasn’t my intention.
I strongly concur with your response to this disease, and I do feel serum uric acid levels do have merit, but aren't diagnostic. I was simply trying to state some facts, that from my experience, are misunderstood and/or under-appreciated when it comes to gout and it’s not only our profession, but all facets of medicine.
The definitive diagnosis of gout is confirmed by...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of John Chang, MD
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Dr. John Chang was chief of vascular surgery at Long Island Jewish Hospital for many years. He not only lectured all over the world, wrote significant textbooks on PVD, but was a good friend to podiatry. He lectured at podiatry conferences and treated podiatrists as equals or as he called us "part of the team." He will be missed by all who knew him.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP) |
From: Carl Ganio, DPM
The only thing I hate more than ICD-10 comments is…ready for it…the stupid shoe of the day!
Carl Ganio, DPM, Vero Beach, FL
Editor's Response: Based on previous readers' letters, this is a popular section of PM News. Whether we like it or not, shoes are intimately related to the feet we treat.
