First Heelless Athletic Shoe Awarded APMA Seal of Acceptance for Select Models

Sports Medicine the DIFFERENCE Inc. has announced that the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has bestowed the Seal of Acceptance for its Heelless Technology Runners (HTR) shoe. The company’s mission is to aid in an active lifestyle through comfortable heelless performance footwear that encourages natural movement to enable those who suffer from joint and tendon injuries to run, walk, or stand comfortably for long periods of time.

Dr. Harry Lopez

“Most diabetics have a reduced sense of feeling on the bottom of their feet, especially the heel. This shoe, with its heelless technology, can prevent any further damage to the bottom of the feet,” says Harry Lopez, DPM, a podiatric surgery specialist.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Five Trends for Health Systems in 2023

Adaptability and flexibility underscore nearly every major trend facing the healthcare industry in 2023.

2) New competition - During the Great Depression and World War II, a new form of healthcare delivery arose out of the need to provide for the uninsured shipyard, dam, and aqueduct workers in the western United States. This legacy company, Kaiser Permanente, (KP), now serves more than 12 million members in eight states, making it the largest managed care organization in the U.S.

Future entrants into the healthcare industry are not assured the same degree of success as KP, as the new, large investments in healthcare by Amazon, Walmart, and CVS cannot be ignored. Each of these companies has the revenue streams to support their healthcare initiatives. Their for-profit financial models do not support the additional imperatives of medical teaching and research, without which the field of medicine cannot improve. Yet university and academic medical centers, which have supported medicine for decades, might be competing against these financial juggernauts for patients...and workers. The potential for industry disruption is high.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Aetna Medicare Advantage

We are seeing multiple denials from Aetna Medicare Advantage. This is specifically involving the combination of CPT 11721 and CPT 11055. A typical scenario that is getting denied is as follows:

CPT 11055-Q8, with diagnoses I 73.9 L84
CPT 11721-59, with diagnoses B35.1, R26.2

The explanation from Aetna is that CPT 11721 was not paid because the “procedure codes are mutually exclusive.” Is this a new trend? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this?

PM News Subscriber

Response: I appeal them with the APMA appeal letter and I am getting paid on the claims.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MIPS)
From Corey Fox, DPM

There is a box to check for Covid. In the explanation box, I wrote that we had staffing issues and periodic office exposures.  I don't think the application was actually read by a human. As soon as I clicked "submit", I received an email saying my application for a MIPS exception was approved.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

I was collecting the lower amount, if the office visit was less than the co-pay. I have been told by the “experts” that I am obligated to collect the entire co-pay even if I know I will have to issue a refund. Are there other opinions out there?
