APWH Initiates Student/Resident Mentoring Initiative at NYCPM
The Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing (APWH) has initiated a student/resident mentoring initiative. Now in its second year, the program works with students and residents at podiatric colleges. This program allows students and residents to participate in many educational activities, such as co-authoring articles for peer-reviewed medical journals and participating with research projects for posters and abstracts.

Additionally, students and residents can engage in activities at conferences, such as developing a student/resident track at a conference for APWH, organizing a student conference streaming from several podiatric colleges.

USFAS Expands in North Carolina
US Foot and Ankle Specialists (USFAS) has expanded with its recent acquisition of Wake Foot and Ankle Center, adding a podiatry office in Wake Forest, North Carolina. James Judge, DPM is a graduate of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM), and completed his residency from Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania.

Steven Kravitz, DPM was recently honored with being the guest editor of the October issue of Wound Central. This peer-reviewed journal is dedicated to research and treatment in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, his article "Sclerotherapy, Literature Review, Complications, and Case Presentation" was published in the September issue of the Journal of Wound Care.

Geico To Settle $5.5M Complaint Against FL Podiatrist
Geico reached a settlement with a Florida podiatrist it accused of engaging in a patient brokering and kickback scheme with other physicians to channel business through his surgery center and will soon dismiss the case, the insurer has told a Florida federal court. The proposed settlement came Wednesday, three months after Geico filed its complaint against Jonathan Cutler, DPM to recover more than $5.5 million in supposedly fraudulent insurance payments the insurer made to comply with Florida's no-fault personal injury protection law.

RE: The Passing of Richard S. Donela, DPM
Richard Stephen Donela, 75, beloved husband of Barbara (Trigg) Donela, and a resident of Highlands Road, Keeseville, New York, passed away on September 23, 2023, peacefully at CVPH, surrounded by his family. Prior to establishing a medical practice in Bennington, VT in 1976, Dr. Donela was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ.

I was sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Dick Lanham. So many accomplishments during his professional life. Private practitioner, APMA leader, college dean and president. He did it all. I had the honor of serving as Academic Dean at the California College when he was president of the school. He loved to be around students. I was never sure whether this was because he was young at heart, liked to mentor students, or more likely a combination of both. I enjoyed our chats, our dinners with him and Shirley. I cherish those memories. My sincerest and deepest apologies to Shirley and his children. Lisa proudly followed in her father’s footsteps. Those were big shoes to fill.

It was refreshing to see that there are also other podiatrists who still handcraft orthotics in their offices. Having been exposed to the profession while working a summer job in Chicago at Bergman Laboratories while still in high school, I was introduced to this wonderful profession. With that experience and the education and training at the Illinois College of Podiatry (Scholl College), I have been handcrafting orthotics ever since; beginning with leather and cork to Rohadur to Polydur, and finally carbon fiber molded to corrected plaster casts. There is great satisfaction in handcrafting a custom orthotic that really fits, corrects foot alignment, balance, and support while relieving foot-related knee, hip, and low back pain.

It is GREAT to see someone has not abdicated orthotics to 3D or other options for orthotic fabrication. That is what separates us from other professionals who think they have a better mouse trap. Kudos Dr. Janson. Hopefully, others will consider boning up on their historical knowledge and training and begin fabricating more prescriptive “podiatric” orthotics we are famous for.

I would like to commend Dr. Kristina Janson for making orthotics "in-house", and I suspect from her passion that she has obtained the skills and training necessary to properly and safely work with the necessary materials to fabricate orthotics for her patients. And yes, the process of making custom prescription foot orthotics can be labor intensive which is why so many local and national custom foot orthotic laboratories exist, going back to the increased awareness and prescribing of foot orthotics by podiatrists beginning with the boom of the distance running craze back in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
I do have some minor disagreements to her post that I would like to address.
1) There are more than a few podiatrists in the USA that make their own orthotics that have the same passion she has, and desire to make a great patient-specific oriented product and also have the training, experience, and expertise to do so. Sadly, this type of training has been neglected in the education of our podiatry students at our colleges.
2) A majority of podiatrists (that means at least 50%) have switched to 3D printed orthotics. I don't think so.
3) Plaster casting, "a unique approach" it is often considered a lost art form. False. Plaster casting is neither unique, nor a lost art form. 1000s and 1000s of plaster casts are still sent to labs every day to make custom orthotics.
4) Are plaster casts, foam casts, or imaging better to make a custom foot orthotic? It depends mostly on the clinician and the lab, but certainly, I believe that imaging technology is advanced enough to capture "foot nuances".
