VA Podiatrist Discusses 2024 Section 179 Updates
As the end of the year approcahes, Ben Pearl, DPM discussed smart strategies for medical equipment purchases with Robert Gordon MD on Dr. Pearl’s podcast, Fit Foot U. The 179 medical equipment deduction has increased to $1,220,000. The equipment must be in place by December 31, 2024, and not just on the order date.

Dr. Gordon said that low maintenance machines make practical sense. Pearl added that when purchasing a new modality, it is useful to schedule patients in advance before the first day of implementation to start recouping your investment in the medical device.

Most Amputation Preventable By Daily Foot Checks: Ghana Podiatrist
Amanda Mawudoku, a podiatrist, says podiatry plays a significant role in limb preservation and prevention of amputations in diabetics. Mawudoku noted that "most amputations are preventable by checking your feet daily, visiting with your podiatrist, and wearing proper footwear." Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, she said amputating the lower limbs of diabetics had ceased in the United Kingdom, where she practiced, due to the work of podiatrists.
|
|
Amanda Mawudoku |
Explaining how podiatry could help prevent amputation of the legs of diabetics, she said the connection between diabetes and the feet was important because diabetes could cause nerve damage and reduced circulation, leading to limb loss and other complications. She noted that podiatrists could spot potential problems before they become serious and could offer treatments to prevent complications. "Our routine foot inspections and examinations detect issues like ulcers, corns, calluses, and other warning signs to prevent amputation."

RE: The Passing of SuEllen Dercher
PM News is saddened to report the passing of SuEllen Dercher, 75, from complications of sarcoidosis. In 1987, SuEllen and her husband David Dercher, took over Gordon labs, expanded production and marketing, and introduced new products in dermatological markets worldwide.
|
|
SuEllen Dercher |
Her commitment to podiatric education grew with the awarding of annual scholarships, financial support, and visits to schools. She also participated on corporate advisory boards, medical student projects, and exhibiting at podiatric conferences. SuEllen was a beloved figure in the podiatric community and she will be sorely missed.

Query: UV Light for Instrument Care
I have always used some form of liquid instrument bath for instruments in treatment rooms. I was wondering if anyone uses UV light on instruments in their treatment rooms?

From Jon Purdy, DPM
It goes without saying that this is a tragedy regardless. The other tragedy is the root cause of what led to this, and that started with the inception of Medicare. It is, and always was, destined to be insolvent. Medicare does not function as originally promised, and now is tinkering with the system, partnering with private plans. The not so unintended consequences are seen in everyday practice and patient care.
Can anyone name a program the government runs that is fiscally responsible and works well? If the working class were allowed to keep and invest the money the government takes from them their entire working lives, an individual would have a million plus dollars to spend as they see fit on their healthcare. This ownership inevitably necessitates responsibility. One would be able to afford their own insurance premiums and pass what is left to their own families. The government in all its wisdom has farmed out Medicare allowing for further corruption, as has been eloquently outlined numerous times by Dr. Kesselman.
Medicare effectively pulls millions of people out of the free market affecting the price and function of private plans. It is not subject to market forces such as they demand a quality and cost-effective product to stay in business.
Jon Purdy, DPM, New Iberia, LA

From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM
To me, the goal is simple - get a group of leaders (past and present) to have a conclave with a single task: Figure out how DPMs can earn $400,000+ in practice (like other specialties); then the applicants will pour into podiatry.

From: Connie Lee Bills, DPM, Robert Kornfeld, DPM
I can say that I attended podiatry school and my sister attended dental school. She got a full ride at the time with about the same GPA and I got a half tuition scholarship. She has consistently made five times as much as me throughout our careers and will retire this year, while I continue to work. If I had to do it again, I would do something different, but I love my job and I believe it is right for some but not if you are counting dollars.
Connie Lee Bills, DPM, Mount Pleasant, MI
There is no question, and I have been a witness to this for well over 40 years, that we are supremely well trained in recognizing and treating foot and ankle pathology, but we have literally no training, outside of biomechanics, to understand the underlying mechanisms of pathology. If we had this training in comprehensive understanding of the human body, we would have much better acceptance by our MD/DO colleagues and we would be much better physicians. Functional medicine provides this in-depth understanding of why a patient has crossed the morbidity threshold and is sitting in your office. As doctors, it is our job to manage the causes prior to treating the symptoms. Even if your patient improves from what you did, the unaddressed mechanisms will lead to new pathology in the future.
If we continue to function as we have, trained in the foot and ankle but not in the whole body, this profession will certainly not survive into...

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day
"We focused on consumerism and waste as its bi-product, and began trawling the UK shorelines (including the tidal Thames) to find plastic rubbish.
 |
|
These shoes are real garbage! |
We then reconstituted the rubbish to manufacture a consumer product from the product of our consumption."
