NJ Podiatrist Discusses What to Look for in Running Socks

Look for socks made with a fabric blend of Merino wool or synthetic fibers like nylon, spandex, polyester, and lycra. Whatever you do, our experts advise staying away from socks with a high percentage of cotton, which absorbs moisture rather than wicking it away. “You’re going to be uncomfortable because your foot is going to be wet and you may also end up falling prey to skin and nail infections from running with stagnant, wet material on your foot,” says Adenike Sonaike, DPM, a podiatrist and Medical Director with Baker Street Health in Motion, practicing in New York and New Jersey.

Dr. Adenike Sonaike

Sometimes the socks with the most rave reviews just don’t work for your individual foot mechanics. Here are the signs that a running sock isn’t working for you, according to Dr. Sonaike: Your foot is overheating, bunching near the toes or in the arches, socks are sliding down, or blisters.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
NY Podiatrist Explains How to Choose Travel Shoes

Finding the best walking shoes for travel can make all the difference in your journey, whether you're exploring city streets, trekking through scenic trails, or navigating airports. According to Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board certified podiatrist and foot surgeon, prioritizing comfort and support is essential when choosing travel footwear.

Dr. Bruce Pinker

When choosing shoes for walking long distances across different surfaces like concrete, sand, or trails, it's important to focus on features that ensure comfort, support, and durability, Dr. Pinker says. "Look for a durable outsole with adequate traction, a firm heel counter for stability, a cushioned and shock absorbing midsole, a cushioned insole with added arch support, durable uppers, and a toe box that is not cramped and allows for an air exchange," he explains. If you're searching for a shoe for walking in sand or on the beach, Pinker recommends choosing one with a rubber outsole and a flexible, grippy tread pattern, as it's generally the most effective for preventing slippage on those types of surfaces.

PODIATRISTS IN ACADEMIA
CA Podiatrist Reaches Another Milestone

David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, Professor of Surgery and Neurological Surgery at the University of Southern California and a global leader in diabetic limb preservation, has reached another milestone. According to Google Scholar, Dr. Armstrong’s research has now been cited over 80,000 times, achieving an h-index of 125 and an i10-index of 515. These metrics solidify his place among the most influential medical researchers globally, underscoring the profound impact of his work on diabetic limb salvage, wound healing, and wearable health technologies.

Dr. David Armstrong

Dr. Armstrong’s latest achievement comes just one year after he surpassed the 70,000-citation mark, reflecting the rapid adoption and recognition of research in limb preservation. His work, which bridges interdisciplinary collaborations in surgery, engineering, and technology, continues to help shape the future of diabetic foot care and limb preservation, preventing amputations worldwide.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Beware of These Malpractice Landmines

EHRs are increasingly leading to malpractice lawsuits. While EHR-related lawsuits still make up only a small number of lawsuits, user error is the cause of 64 percent of EHR-related malpractice claims, according to the Doctors Company. Practices need to focus on eliminating several common problems, mostly tied to user actions, which have led to the majority of EHR-related suits.

6. Missing Information

The idea of physicians missing a vital piece of information in the EHR can be either a user or a technical error. These types of problems are most likely to crop up when a physician is using a new system.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (GUEST EDITORIALS)
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM, Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

The most recent data available indicate that approximately 12,000 individual applied to dental school with an increase of 7% from the prior years.

Allen M. Jacobs, DPM, St. Louis

Dr. Udell piqued my interest when he wondered if anyone had any thoughts about the applications to dental school. I used websites for CPME and CODA, the dental version of CPME. I am only relating data, not any statistics. Statistics relate a difference or correlation of data which is just numbers. In addition, it would take too much time and a super-computer trying to factor in 32 teeth as opposed to two feet or maybe ten toes. Some data is from 2023 and some from 2024, but this will have to suffice. There was not a lot of data mentioning an applicant who may have applied to more than one school. The way it’s presented, it looks like the numbers are for individuals, not total applications.

Podiatry had 696 applications for admission and sat 592 first year students for an 85% acceptance rate. Dental schools have about 11,000 applicants and 58% admissions or 6,300 or so first year students. GPAs for dental school range from 3.2 to 3.85 (Harvard) while podiatry schools’ average GPA is about 3.3. Science GPAs are slightly higher than overall GPAs.

Tuition for resident first year dental schools average $57,000 and out of state non-residents $75,000. Podiatry tuition averages $61,000. Dental students take their own exam, so MCAT as opposed to DAT is not reported.

RESPONSES/COMMEN7S (NON-CLINICAL) -PART 1
RE: Assassination of UHC CEO
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

The murder of the CEO of UHC is reprehensible and violence is no way to resolve the problems with the UHC or any insurance company. Many of my colleagues and I have suggested this was bound to happen given our society and the way all insurance (not just health insurance) treats their policyholders. So we understand why it happened, but in no way does anyone I have spoken with support this disastrous cowardly act. What I have read in Medical Economics over the past really saddens me. Apparently, many physicians of all specialties have commented that they show no empathy for Mr. Thompson. This is despite that he was a human being first as well as a father, son, estranged husband, etc.

Likely all of us have had difficulties, both in our professional and personal lives, dealing with various types of insurance companies. This is not limited to our professional liability carriers, but also to...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Healthcare Reform
From: Chris Robertozzi, DPM

The United States has been ranked as having the worst healthcare in the world in high-income countries, despite spending the most money according to the Commonwealth Fund report in 2022. As a physician, that is embarrassing. To find the best solutions that will make us the leader of healthcare in the world, the entire delivery of healthcare must be evaluated at the same time and everyone that has anything to do with the healthcare system must be involved. That would include: all national associations of those who provide healthcare in any manner, America’s Health Insurance Plans, National Pharmaceutical Association, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and patient advocate groups.

Unless everyone is at the table and understands each other’s issues, a long-lasting solution will not be possible. They have all been sent an invitation to join the initial Zoom meeting on February 5, 2025, at 4 pm EST to see how we can...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION)
RE: Long-Term Improvements in Podiatric Medical Education Needed
From: Howard Bonenberger, DPM

I graduated from PCPM in 1980. It was apparent then that the bottom 15% of our class were in over their heads but were admitted because of a small applicant pool and the needed tuition dollars. Most of us knew a student or two at other podiatry schools and they made the same observations. This was not lost on the premed students NOR advisors at the undergraduate level where the paradigm went like this: If not MD then DO, if not DO, then DDS/DMD, if not dentistry then maybe, just maybe podiatry.

Our leaders may have watched "Field of Dreams" one too many times thinking if they built a few more schools, then the (more qualified?) students will come. This further diluted an already shrinking and weaker applicant pool. Next, leadership doubled down and approved even more schools believing that if a school was closer to them, more students would decide that podiatry was right for them. Maybe put a school on every block. I can only imagine the rotator cuff injuries from all of the back-slapping at APMA leadership meetings.

Clearly, the past model has not and will not prove fruitful. Leadership must first admit that a huge problem exists and I'm not sure they are willing to do so. I've not read anything that honestly or realistically faces it head-on or presents a logical plan. It is time for a truly independent, qualified advisory group to evaluate the situation and recommend long-term improvements which should be published at-large for the profession to read.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

Unfortunately, this will never stop or change, but rather it will get worse and not better. The largest and most influential lobby in the U.S. is the American Hospital Association (AHA). They control healthcare... period, and there is no question about it.

Most hospital systems are considered non-for-profit oligarchies. This is so they do not have to pay taxes. Most take their profits and put them into foundations, but that is minor in comparison to where else they put their money. They usually reinvest in physical plants, but they also invest in real estate including farm land (usually the largest land owner in the community), and then taking all the other funds and investing it in the stock market. Hospitals are corporate conglomerates and are there to make money and provide healthcare in that order. They make money from...
