Biomedix Donates Advanced Diagnostic Technology to NYCPM
Biomedix, a leader in advanced diagnostic technology in vascular health, has announced the donation of its cutting-edge PADnet 5th generation device, PADnet Xpress, and accompanying digital health assessments to the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM). The donation will support both the clinical training of students and research in the growing field of vascular health, positioning NYCPM as a leader in podiatric education and care.
|
|
Dr. Michael Trepal |
Michael J. Trepal, DPM, Dean of NYCPM, expressed enthusiasm for the donation, stating, “This generous donation from Biomedix will significantly enhance our educational programs and research initiatives. The PADnet technology aligns with our mission to provide our students with hands-on experience using the latest medical devices and techniques. We are confident that the integration of PADnet will contribute to the training of skilled podiatrists who are better equipped to address the growing prevalence of peripheral artery disease.”

NJ Podiatrist's Leg-Saving Referral Saves Mall Santa's Christmas
Santa is used to giving gifts, not receiving them, but this holiday season, 73-year-old Ronald Fierro will once again take pictures with children sitting on his lap, thanks to a unique surgery that saved his leg. In March, his future in the red suit was jeopardized when a painful lesion on his left foot was diagnosed as a non-healing ulcer caused by diabetes.
|
|
Dr. Frederick Rothberg |
Initial treatment for cellulitis, a deep skin infection, provided little relief. Tests conducted by podiatrist Frederick Rothberg, DPM, revealed severe disease in his lower right leg and inadequate blood flow for healing. Fierro was referred to vascular surgeon Nicholas J. Russo, MD, at Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center. Dr. Russo performed a three-hour revascularization procedure, using a vein from Fierro’s thigh to restore blood flow and promote healing.

IA Podiatrist Retires as Carroll Community Chorus Director
With a smooth, momentous passing of the Carroll Community Chorus director’s baton from David Martin, DPM to Rose Cameron, the chorus is putting the final touches on its annual Christmas concert. Dr. Martin has been the face of Carroll Community Chorus since 1990, recruiting singers, selecting the concert music, leading the weekly rehearsals, publicizing the event, and more.
|
|
Dr. David Martin |
Dr. Martin, who was a podiatrist in Carroll, 1982 until he retired in 2012, had sung in the chorus for a number of years when it was directed by John Erickson. The program went into hiatus for a few years before Martin was urged to try to revive it. Martin says he said he would if he could find a core of singers who were interested. Membership went from 32 the first year to 28 the second year, but took off from there, and the chorus had 84 singers one year.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Beware of These Malpractice Landmines
EHRs are increasingly leading to malpractice lawsuits. While EHR-related lawsuits still make up only a small number of lawsuits, user error is the cause of 64 percent of EHR-related malpractice claims, according to the Doctors Company. Practices need to focus on eliminating several common problems, mostly tied to user actions, which have led to the majority of EHR-related suits.
2. Drop-down Menus
Drop-down menus can often be the source of a user error that leads to a malpractice suit. Not only can users click the wrong thing in the menu, such as the wrong patient symptom, but these menus lead to structured information that physicians can easily overlook when reviewing a note.

Query: Can a Nail Like This Ever Regrow Normally?
Below is a photo of a thick abnormal toenail that all of us have come across in practice. The nail oftentimes stops growing distally as it comes to a dead end of hitting skin that is raised above the level of the toenail.

RE: URGENT - Contact Your Representative About H.R. 10073
From: Mark Ray, DPM
Tell your Representative to co-sponsor the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act (H.R. 10073)!
"Recently, Reps. Greg Murphy, MD (R-NC) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) introduced the "Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act" (H.R. 10073). This bipartisan legislation seeks to eliminate the looming 2.8% payment cut and provide a 1.8% payment update in 2025, an actual payment increase equal to one half the Medicare Economic Index (MEI), helping to stabilize physician practices and protecting patients' access to care.
Time is running out – there are precious few legislative days left before the end of the year with Congress expected to conduct a "lame duck" session after the elections. This will be the last opportunity for Congress to pass H.R. 10073 as part of the final year-end package."

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (GUEST EDITORIALS) | |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I was extremely edified reading Dr. Jacobs’ response to my editorial titled, “I have Built a Monument more Lasting than Bronze.” I wish more of the silent majority would join Dr. Jacobs and myself. It is very edifying to see that we are on the same page when the question of board certification is posited. While reading Dr. Jacobs’ response, I could not help thinking about the play by Samuel Beckett, “Waiting for Godot.” It was voted the most significant English language play of the 20th century. It is the perfect example of existential absurdist theater defying interpretation but like all good literature, personal interpretation is encouraged; and as it applies to the number of certifying boards in podiatry, it is textbook. It is an unspoiled version of tragic comedy, and an existential metaphor for the present certification problem. Should ABFAS refuse to compromise, it is like a kid taking his football and going home. If ABPM digs in its heels and doesn’t compromise, we will be at the conclusion of “Waiting for Godot.”
Two individuals named Estragon (Gogo) and Vladimir (Didi) are found on a barren set, except for a single leafless tree in Act I. They banter angrily and discuss life and nothing in particular while they wait for Godot who never...
