PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
AASPM Podiatrists Participate at TRE
Ben Pearl, DPM got a chance to interact with run retailers in Austin, TX at The Run Event (TRE). The Run Event is arguably the largest and most influential run trade show in the world. There was plenty of dialogue about how to keep baby boomers running. Dr. Pearl had a chance to collaborate with John Notary, a seasoned run retailer in Bethlehem, PA, in a presentation geared to keep baby boomer runners injury-free on the road.

Additionally, the importance of the communication between patients and running retailers was highlighted. While at the exhibition, there was a great exchange of information between fellow colleagues Drs. Rob Conenllo, Brian Fullem, Paul Langer, and Matt Werd who also manned the Running Doctors Booth. There were also opportunities for discussions about product development at the exhibitor booths.

IN THE COURTS |
Medical Device Maker Settles Allegations it Improperly Compensated VA Podiatrists
A medical device manufacturer based in Sunnyvale, California has agreed to pay $3 million to settle allegations it improperly compensated podiatrists at four Veterans Affairs medical facilities to promote use of its product. Government investigators allege that Spiracur, Inc. improperly compensated VA podiatrists with gifts, gratuities, and excessive speaking fees in order to increase sales of its product.
Spiracur manufactures and sells a negative pressure wound treatment product, known as “the SNaP system,” which is used primarily in the treatment of diabetic ulcers. Spiracur improperly compensated VA podiatrists who worked at VA facilities in Phoenix, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Cleveland. Between 2010 and 2015, Spiracur sold those facilities just over $3.3 million in SNaP systems.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Top 5 Tips to Increase Patient Visits - Part 6
One last tip
Every practice should have a recall, or recare, program. Whether you do this manually or use a practice marketing platform to do it, it is one of the more important tools in increasing visits from existing patients. Many preventive care visits are now covered by insurance with no co-pay or deductible, but patients forget to schedule annual exams, well child visits, and annual vaccines. One quick reminder by phone, e-mail, or text goes a long way to getting patients in for those annual visits.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Burning Foot Syndrome
A 70 year old white male in good physical condition, pre-diabetic, presented with a history of right hip replacement. His chief complaint is a burning pain in both feet after going to bed. The onset occurs nightly after the patient goes to the bathroom. He gets up about three times per night and the burning pain occurs only when he gets back into bed. This pain lasts for 5-10 minutes or more, and then he falls asleep. Any thoughts?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL
Again, the government is encouraging picking winners and losers. Will the solo practice be a "minority group"? If so, perhaps a discrimination suit could be brought against the singling out and exclusion of "minorities"?
