PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
NY Podiatrist Invested as Dame in the Order of Malta

Recently, the Order of Malta bestowed the title Dame of Magistral Grace on Kathleen R. Fallon, DPM at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Only 12 people from the Archdiocese of New York were invested as Knights and Dames in the Order of Malta.

Drs. Kathleen Fallon and Peter Kelly with Cardinal Sean O'Malley

Dr. Fallon was presented with a box containing the insignia cross by Peter J. Kelly MD, KM, President of the American Association of the Order of Malta and Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley, who served as Principal celebrant and homilist of the Investiture Mass.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Financial Reports Your Practice Needs to Run - Part 3

Most physicians readily admit that classes on how to run a successful medical practice were not part of the curriculum in medical school. While "financial reporting" might not have been a class at your medical school, experts say you need to at least become familiar with understanding some of the basic reports. Here are seven to track.

3. Balance Sheet – “A balance sheet shows what your practice owns and what it owes. There are items that show up on a balance sheet that might not show up on a P&L report. For example, a balance sheet will show you if certain loans are being paid down. It can also show where the practice needs to invest in terms of capital improvements. This type of report can also assist you in tax planning.” - John Bender, MD, Board of Directors at AAFP

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Can CPT 11056 and G0127 be Billed Together?

After reviewing CCI edits, it looks like CPT 11056 and G0127 cannot be billed on the same date of service. Am I reading this correctly?

David E. Linde, DPM, Birmingham, AL

Response: That is incorrect. The use of a -59 or -XS CPT code modifier on the CPT 11056 code will override the CCI edits, and hence they can be billed together on the same day. Please check the LCD of your MAC carrier on the requirements for properly billing RFC codes.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Source for Diabetic Shoe Company

What diabetic shoe companies are others using that have both good products and good service?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Dr. Moore is being very astute in asking whether a new modality is covered by insurance companies. Every year, like clockwork, there is some new diagnostic or therapeutic modality being promoted at our conventions. Very often the sales reps will swear that the new device is covered by insurance and gullible practitioners find out, too late, that the codes given by the salesperson is really specific for a different modality, and under an audit the practitioner will have to pay back all that he or she received.

In most cases when this happens, the doctor will have little recourse because the manufacturer is long out of business. The bottom line is this: Yes there are new and exciting modalities being developed that can help our patients. As Dr. Moore has done, before becoming a buyer, we need to give a "shout out" and find out whether the device is therapeutically beneficial and whether it will be legitimately covered by insurance companies.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Gary S Smith, DPM

I came across advertisements from the late 1800s for snake oil and I was struck by the almost identical claims of cure by CBD oil dealers. I heard CBD oil repels giant emu attacks so I keep a bottle in my office. It works too! I haven't seen one emu!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

I agree with Dr. Markinson’s assertions. Do primary care physicians get paid if a patient has no symptoms but is worried about high blood pressure? Do dermatologists get paid if their patient has no symptoms but is concerned with a spot? Do these and other physicians see patients annually for assessment regardless of a chief complaint and get paid? My bet is yes they do.

Specifically, the OS that should be used is Window 10 Pro. Pro has BitLocker that allows users to encrypt data to the hard drive.
