PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Most Low Back Issues are a Result of Gait Dysfunction: NY Podiatrist
It may seem like the most natural activity in the world, but the apparent ease and convenience of walking are deceptive. Abnormal movements put stress and strain on regions of the body remote to the foot, setting off a “kinetic chain” of health issues including arthritis and lower-back pain. “If the patient doesn’t have a congenital problem or hasn’t fallen out of a sixth-story window, most low-back issues are the result of gait dysfunction,” says podiatrist George Trachtenberg, DPM.

Dr. George Trachtenberg |
A Harvard study from 2012 found that memory problems can lead to an unsteady gait, and experts warn that conditions ranging from tight fascia to chronic headaches can also affect our stride.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
CA Podiatrist Hosts Tele-Town Hall for Diabetes Month
Podiatrist Dr. Lee Rogers hosted a tele-town hall about preventing amputations in diabetes, with approximately 5,500 Los Angeles-area residents. A tele-town hall is conducted by automatically dialing phone numbers and connecting callers with the seminar in progress. November is diabetes month. Approximately 30 million Americans suffer from diabetes.
|
Dr. Lee Rogers |
Rogers told audience members that it is important to prevent amputations from diabetes because the are costly, lead to lower quality of life, and premature death. Several studies have shown podiatrists' roles in preventing amputations. Rogers is the medical director of the Amputation Prevention Centers of America, a RestorixHealth company managing 130 wound centers in 24 states.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
Long Awaited Foot Sleeve Patent Application Granted
ING Source, Inc., a three-generation family company in Hickory, NC, has announced that it has received notice from the United States Patent and Trademark Office that its patent pending application for the FS6® Compression Foot Sleeve has been allowed. This product is sold under the brands OS1st and OrthoSleeve, with descriptions of Compression Foot Sleeves, Plantar Fasciitis Sleeves, Performance Foot Sleeves, and formerly as the Feetures Plantar Fasciitis Sleeve.
|
FS6® Compression Foot Sleeve |
Inventor and CEO Dave Higgins says, “We have worked hard and waited for a long time in order to be sure our I.P. was consistent with our purpose. We can now aggressively protect the invention and market creation for which we are so proud.” ING originally introduced its Compression Foot Sleeve as an innovative way to treat and prevent plantar fasciitis in a market where many treatments were cumbersome, expensive, and uncomfortable. The design concept was based upon science, experience, and study, and the product has been well-accepted.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Five Firing Tips for Medical Practice Managers - Part 7
Communicate Expectations
It bears noting that you'll need to hire less often if you offer competitive pay, communicate expectations, and establish measurable goals, all of which have been linked to lower turnover. When it does become necessary to fill a hole on your team, you can help smooth the transition by creating an operations manual that details how your office runs, says Keith Borglum, a medical practice consultant with Professional Management & Marketing in Santa Rosa, CA. What's the process for opening the office, greeting patients, answering phones, rooming patients, collecting at the point of service, and setting up trays for your physicians?
"All employees leave at some point and you've put all this training into them," says Borglum, noting it should not be necessary to re-invent the wheel. "Write it all down in an organized manual so it's that much easier to train new people." Clear direction also yields a higher probability of success, he says. "That even helps with recruiting because when you tell them you have an organized training process, it alleviates much of their concern," says Borglum.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Meaningful Use 2016
I have successfully attested for Meaningful Use for 2012, 2013, and 2014. Due to a change of EHR systems, I will not be able to successfully attest for 2015, which will mean a reduction in 2017. If I am able to successfully attest for 2016, will the penalty remain or will it go back to full payment?
Michaele Crawford, DPM, Butler, PA
Response: I would not be so fast to assume you cannot attest in 2015. The rules for Meaningful Use have changed for 2015, and one of the changes is that you only need to meet Meaningful Use for 90 consecutive days this year. If you have 90 days of Meaningful Use with either system you could successfully attest.
That being said, if you do not attest in 2015 you will have a penalty for 2017. What you do in 2016 will determine if you have a penalty in 2018. So if you meet Meaningful Use in 2016 you will not have a penalty in 2018.
Michael L. Brody, DPM, Commack, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PQRS) - PART 1A |
From: Stephen Musser, DPM
I agree with Dr. Smith. Besides the APMA surveying the members, has any inquiry or investigation begun to see what the problems/reasons are for so many denials? A response from one of the powers in charge would be appreciated.
Stephen Musser, DPM, Cleveland, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PQRS) - PART 1B |
From: R. Alex Dellinger, DPM
I share the frustrations of Dr. Smith regarding the PQRS penalty. None of the three doctors in our group avoided the penalty for 2014. All of us reported via the claims method. I know undoubtedly we did it properly. We watched APMA webinars, read articles, and were prepared for reporting. I know the claims went through, but we were rejected. We have spent an enormous amount of time, energy, and money on PQRS, meaningful use, EMR, etc. and then, just like that, get a 2% hit without apparent recourse. I agree there is something fishy about it.
R. Alex Dellinger, DPM, Little Rock, AR

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Hospitals are pocketing money from insurance companies in a passive income situation just because they are a hospital. The American Hospital Association lobby has done its job and the insurance companies pay accordingly.
Meanwhile, our fees continue to be lowered bit by bit and year after year to the point where it is no longer profitable to continue to stay in business as an independent practitioner. We become beholden to practicing in a corporate setting rather than in a...
