PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Safety Concerns Force Schools to Ban Crocs: IL Podiatrist
As the popularity of Crocs surges among younger generations, schools across the United States are rethinking their footwear policies. The colorful, customizable clogs have become a staple for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, but safety concerns are growing as more students are reportedly tripping and falling in the slip-on shoes. As a result, schools in over a dozen states have implemented bans on Crocs, citing potential hazards in hallways and classrooms.
|
Dr. Megan Leahy |
While Crocs have gained popularity for their comfort and customizable design, health experts warn of potential drawbacks. In an interview with HuffPost, Megan Leahy, DPM, a podiatrist at the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, said she has seen kids and even adults trip and fall more in Crocs than in closed-toe shoes with stiffer heel support.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
GA Podiatrists Participate in 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer
Continuing its two decades-plus of support for the cause, Ankle & Foot Centers of America participated in the Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, offering on-site podiatric support for walkers during the September 28-29 event.
|
(L-R) Drs. Joseph D. Giovinco, Mindy Trotter, and Osayamen Edigin |
Since 2002, Ankle & Foot Centers of America has sponsored the breast cancer event as part of its dedication to support local communities and important health causes. Joseph D. Giovinco, DPM, Mindy J. Trotter, DPM, and Osayamen Edigin, DPM, provided medical care at each of the eight stops so the 600 walkers could see a foot doctor or foot surgeon for treatment of foot and ankle problems such as blisters, sprains and soreness, or just to help walkers deal with the unavoidable issue of sweaty feet.

PODIATRIC PODCASTS |
VA Podiatrist Discusses Role of Feet with Pro Soccer Player
Ben Pearl, DPM recently discussed the role of the feet in training and playing soccer with Andrew Dykstra, a former professional soccer goalie with DC United. Dykstra is currently an occupational therapist and emphasizes the importance of feet and ankles as a foundation for the knee and hip. He does a lot of barefoot exercises to help with balance and stability.

They also talked about the dominance of the sagittal plane in everyday movement patterns and the importance of developing movement in the frontal and transverse planes. It was noted that footwear in soccer often focuses on being lightweight at the expense of adequate stability, which makes orthotics essential in many cases.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
10 Ways to Strengthen Your Strategic Plan
A strategic plan is not just a document written by physicians and managers and then filed away for safekeeping. It is a vision for the practice, owned by the practice. For a medical practice to succeed, everyone must engage with and live and breathe the plan. Here are 10 questions to assess your strategic plan.
2. Do you have a sustainable competitive advantage? How will you make money in the future? Do you have a unique strategic position, a concept that you “own” in the minds of your target patients? Do you have special capabilities that can’t be easily copied? Remember that nothing lasts forever, so you need to focus on advantages for both today and tomorrow.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
From: Howard Friedman, DPM
Dr. Kesselman calls attention to a test which measures how long one can stand on one leg as a test podiatrists can administer to evaluate patients for risk of falling. However, the "Timed Up and Go" test is a quicker test to administer and has been tested and validated to asess balance and fall risk and it has been described as the most frequently used test in the world for this condition. I administer this test to any patient I feel has an untreated balance and gait issue.
Patients begin seated. At the start of the test they are instructed to stand, walk 3 meters, turn around, walk back to the chair and sit down. A time greater than about 12 seconds is considered predictive of a risk of falling. I then refer those patients to a physical therapist for gait training.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Each state has or does not have licensing laws pertaining to the regulation of certain services. Orthotics and prosthetics are no different. Providing custom fabricated, custom fitted or over-the-counter orthotics are prime examples where state regulations not only differ but often completely clash.
One example, here in NY where just about everything is highly regulated, one may scratch their head when they find out that there are no state licensing requirements for providing custom orthotics or prosthetics. This means anyone can hang a shingle out and sell custom orthotics and prosthetics. No formal schooling, training or certification, or license required. Across the Hudson River, you cannot provide custom orthotics or prosthetics without having either a...
