INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
UK Podiatrist Receives Award for Care of Leprosy Patients in India

A podiatrist in Wargrave has won an award for her voluntary work helping people in India suffering from leprosy. Alison Clark-Morris, who co-founded Feetwise Footcare in High Street, was presented with the Alf Morris Award by the Royal College of Podiatry at a ceremony at the House of Lords.

Alison Clark-Morris

The award is in recognition of her work with the Village of Hope leprosy colony in Delhi. Clark-Morris was the first podiatrist to visit the colony when she went in 2017. She has now visited four times in total, working in the bandaging unit to treat people with foot ulceration and dress their wounds. Since her first visit, she has also fundraised to buy equipment, including hand-propelled tricycles for patients, better lighting, clinical trolleys, footwear, and blankets.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
4 Ways Streamlining Front Office Operations Can Drive Revenue For Your Practice

2. Automate your appointment reminders.

Ninety percent of cell phone users ignore calls and rarely check voicemails. However, people respond to text messages in about ninety seconds and check emails more than thirty-four times daily. Practices utilizing appointment scheduling software can set up reminders and notifications for upcoming patient appointments. Patients can confirm, cancel, or reschedule with a few clicks.

For practices, automating appointment reminders reduces no-shows, improves scheduling accuracy, and eliminates the time-consuming task of manually confirming appointments. In addition, when appointments are canceled in advance or left unconfirmed, the practice can fill those available appointment slots to maximize profitability.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Deborah Sue Ross, DPM

Deborah Ross, 74, died peacefully on October 17th, after a full and vibrant life. She was adventurous, always reaching out, and always interested in how her many friends around the world were doing.

Dr. Deborah Ross

She was a leader in the profession of podiatry, practicing for over 35 years in Briarcliff Manor, NY, her lifelong home, continuing the work of her beloved father, Dr. Sidney Ross. Deborah graduated from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in 1987, held leadership positions in her professional association helped improve podiatry, and lobbied legislators for better care. Dr. Gabriel Ross has continued the family tradition as the third generation Ross to graduate as a podiatrist.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ACFAS NEWS) - PART 1A
From: Patrick (PJ) Andrus, CAE

Thank you to Dr. Oloff for raising an important issue. The College agrees that advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion is imperative; additional information that should be considered when reading Dr. Oloff’s letter:

• The 2022 Board Nominations Committee, Chaired by Thanh Dinh, DPM, FACFAS, Immediate Past President of ACFAS, conducted a detailed review of all applicants for the Board, including an interview process to thoroughly assess every candidate. Last year, Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS was elected to the Board of Directors and Dr. Dinh still serves on the Board. Unfortunately, the College received zero applications from female members this year. We recognize our role to improve that statistic and accept a goal of increasing the diversity of...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ACFAS NEWS) - PART 1B
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM

ACFAS has had and continues to benefit from female leadership, including the recent ACFAS presidency. Academic recognition and leadership positions are a meritocracy. In my opinion, no leadership position in ACFAS should be awarded based upon any criteria other than demonstrated excellence. If the ACFAS BOD fails to include a recently nominated slate which happens to not include a female, and the basis for such nominations was legitimate, then I say so be it. Many of the schools (medical and podiatry) are greater than 50% female in constitution. There is therefore every opportunity for female podiatrists to establish bona fides by committee participation, publishing, teaching, and thus advancing to nomination for the BOD of ACFAS, or in fact any podiatry-affiliated organization.

Perhaps Dr. Oloff might devote equivalent time to ACFAS as she does designing shoes, advance in the organization, and participate in magnifying the role of female podiatrists in the organization. Whether it is APMA, ACFAS, my state organization, or my personal healthcare provider, I want the most qualified individual regardless of their individual identifying characteristics.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Eddie Davis, DPM

I agree with Dr. Anthony Hoffman concerning the lack of a specific ICD-10 code for plantar fibromatosis or Ledderhose disease. Keep in mind that the lack of a specific diagnosis code not only affects our ability to bill for treatment of this malady but also affects data collection with respect to the incidence and prevalence of this disease. Ledderhose disease is classified as a rare disease, but I question how rare it actually is.

I have had an interest in Ledderhose disease for several decades and have developed an off-label treatment for it involving use of enzyme injections into the lesions. Hyaluronidase has worked well for me and I am happy to share my protocol with...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW)
From: Richard I. Polisner, DPM

With my legal and mediation background, I always like "innocent until proven guilty." I do believe that once the allegations are printed, you are guilty without a defense. I don't like that! It's too easy to make false accusations and too hard to defend yourself after. I knew Sol Lipsman 50 years ago and he was certainly one of the good guys. From the age listed, I assume this is the Sol I knew.  I hope the news of these accusations are totally unfounded and PM News will someday print a retraction. If they are true, I will be sad for Sol and hope that he is punished as appropriate and receives the help he would then need.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS JURY VERDICT REPORTER)
From: Chris Robertozzi, DPM

This seems to me to be an example of a case that should have never been filed. From reading the article, it appears the plaintiff’s expert lied at trial about the cause of the post-operative complication. Rest assured that this isn’t the only case where the plaintiff’s expert has lied. For the last few years, I have had the opportunity to defend my fellow colleagues in malpractice cases. The majority of them have outrageous lies. For example, the first case I defended, without going into all the details, the plaintiff’s expert stated the surgery was unnecessary because everyone knows that gout is caused by trauma. Consequently, medication should have been prescribed and no surgery should have been performed.

I filed a complaint with the NJ State Board of Medical Examiners since the case was filed in...
