Tracking Steps Helps to Monitor Fitness Progress: AL Podiatrist
Brent Haverstock, DPM, co-director of the Advanced Limb Preservation Clinic at UAB, suggests visiting a reputable running shoe store for assessment before picking out a walking shoe. Tracking steps can help individuals establish goals and monitor progress. Studies have shown that about 7,500 steps per day or 30 minutes of moderate physical activity reflects public health guidelines; however, individuals can establish a goal and gradually increase it as activity levels increase.

"With numerous shoe options available, it is important to find what feels comfortable and meets your needs," Haverstock said. "Running shoes typically have a lifespan of 300 to 500 miles, so I recommend replacing them every six months. How to Re-negotiate Payer Contracts
If you feel stuck in a lousy deal with your payers, you can re-negotiate. Here are some steps to renegotiate your contracts and improve your revenue.
5. Seek help when needed. If you ever feel you’re in over your head, ask for help from someone who isn’t as emotionally invested as you are, such as a negotiation coach. Having someone with experience and a fresh set of eyes on your talks can provide insight and propel your success. More importantly, bringing on someone who is not as emotionally involved to help you through the negotiation will help you stay calm and obtain the best results for you and, ultimately, your patients.

Can anyone recommend a reliable service that they have worked with to help with changing the NPI number billed under with all the insurance carriers contracted with a podiatry practice? I am not talking about initial credentialing, just changing from a solo practitioner NPI to a group NPI?

RE: UrgoK2 Compression System

One of the first things you need to know about the Urgo K2 and similar multi-layer compression systems is this — they are Compression Systems! These are not “Unna boots” or other type of archaic compression garment. These products are FDA approved DMERC Stage 2 Surgical devices and dressings.
There are other brand-names on the market (3M, Milliken, Coloplast, Hartman, Essity in addition to Urgo) and they are all treated the same under a single CPT code for physician application: 29581. The typical ICD-10 codes for this product application will be the I87.3xx series and I89.1.
You can bill these adjunctive to an E/M service and they also are independent of wound debridement services. You MUST document the venous hypertension with or without inflammation and ulcer or secondary lymphedema, and have measurements of the affected calf and ankle. Also - do not bill these products as 29580 — they are NOT Unna boots. Also, applying an Unna boot and adding multiple layers does not qualify the multi-layer compression CPT code. The CPT was specifically created for this product group, and once an Unna boot is applied, the 29580 is primary.

Suggesting that a group of codes should be created that would be useful to designate unequal foot length or foot width is a reasonable request. But I’m tired of not seeing an ICD code for hammertoe for all the toes and laterality; and amputation codes need an update with osteomyelitis being the primary causative agent, not trauma as it exists now, among others.

RE: No DPMs Need Apply

I recently received a notice on Linkedin from a young lady who gave up a lucrative career with a pharmaceutical company to attend medical school in Curacao. The notice simply stated there was a change in her status. I remember asking her in the interview why she wanted to give up her position to pursue an MD degree from the Caribbean. She said there was a glass ceiling for folks in the medical business industry who were not doing the bench research and did not possess an MD degree.
I followed up the other day on Linkedin and saw she is presently teaching at Columbia University in New York City. When I talked with her, she told me she got a great offer to teach, not in Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons but in the business sector, at least partly because of her MD degree, so she took it. She mentioned there was even a ‘go to’ site for MDs who did not want to practice medicine, and this website even advertised jobs. I was curious about what she said, and I...

RE: Medicare "Advantage": Questionable Use of Health Risk Assessments Continues to Drive Up Payments to Plans by Billions

I, along with others, have posted a myriad of references to the sham that is Medicare Part C. This recent publication, OIG Cites Billions Wasted on Health Risk Assessment from the OIG is the most infuriating of all recent reports. When will our Congressional reps finally realize that this program must end? The issue here from a political perspective is that it won't unless we, the public, impeach our Congressional delegation who support this program. Where is their job security if they are not re-elected?
I'll admit I am naive because this likely won't stop unless the billions in political contributions from the large insurance companies, which foster these programs, is cut off. Physicians also shoulder some responsibility. It's time to simply refuse to cooperate with those companies which ask us for charts. You are under no legal obligation to provide this information. No charts, no data. Simple fix. I also have seen many health systems take the bull by the horns and simply toss their contracts with these programs out the window.
I know it's easy for me to say all this because I no longer rely on income from seeing patients, but if I did, I hope I would have the fortitude to say enough is enough! The OIG report, is accurate but will it result in any real action?
