Canadian Bill Could End High Heel Workplace Rule
There may be relief on the way for employees who dread wearing high heels to work every day. The MPP for Davenport, Cristina Martins, is introducing a new bill called Putting Your Best Foot Forward Act, 2017 which would prohibit employers from requiring an employee to wear high heel in the workplace. The Canadian Federation of Podiatrists say women are four times as likely to have long-term problems related to their feet, often due to wearing high heels for long periods of time.
|
|
Dr. James Hill |
“Ontario podiatrists see far too many patients with injuries in the workplace that are entirely avoidable that are caused by wearing footwear that is inappropriate or outright unsafe,” said James Hill, DPM,president of the Ontario Podiatric Medical Association. “Podiatrists treat foot pain and deformities in women twice as often as foot disabilities in men, often due to having to wear high heels in their workplaces. This bill will help to address these issues and keep more people healthy in Ontario," says Dr. Hill.

NJ Podiatrist Admits He Scammed Insurers Out of $3 Million
A Passaic County podiatrist admitted in federal court Tuesday that he conned Medicare and private insurers out of $3 million. Anthony J. Enrico, 60 -- who had offices in Paterson and Passaic -- told a U.S. District Court judge in Newark that he billed for more than 150,000 physical therapy sessions that were conducted by unlicensed and unqualified personnel from January 2007 through May 2016. A judge scheduled sentencing on the healthcare fraud plea for Jan. 25.

Bipartisan Deal to Fund Insurer Payments Faces Tough Political Slog
In hopeful news for health plans, two key senators announced the outline of a bipartisan agreement Tuesday to stabilize the individual insurance market by extending cost-sharing subsidy payments to insurers for two years. Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Patty Murray (D-WA), the leaders of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, paired that Democratic demand with a Republican plan allowing states to ease Affordable Care Act rules for the individual insurance market.
Healthcare industry groups generally welcomed the agreement, which could avert an unraveling of the individual market, much higher premiums, and the exit of many insurers from the ACA exchanges. But it was unclear how open other congressional Republicans will be to any deal that they believe props up the Affordable Care Act.

Things to Consider When Retiring from Practice
7. Don't waver from the transition timeline.
If you get wishy-washy, it probably means you didn't fully contemplate tips three and four. That's why it's so important to have your next chapter planned before you take the leap. Once the patient letters have gone out and the staff has begun to transition patients to a new associate, it's too late - not to mention disruptive for patients, staff, partners, and family members.

Query: Acquired Digital Fibrokeratoma
These toes belong to a 72 year old man with no significant past medical history who presented to my office recently. He states the lesions started in childhood and have been increasing in size; local treatment including what would appear to be cauterization has been unsuccessful.
|
|
Acquired Digital Fibrokeratoma |
Biopsy results are: “features suggestive of acquired digital fibrokeratoma”, so not horrible but not much help either. I'm wondering if anyone has seen a similar lesion and can suggest an effective treatment as he is eager to explore options. My thought is to simply excise the lesions and cauterize the wound bed; however, I am concerned about coverage and recurrence.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) | |
From: Jeffrey D. Lehrman, DPM
In my opinion, MIPS, which is part of MACRA, is an unfair, unjust, outrageous program which, in its current form, does nothing to improve quality of care, improve outcomes, or decrease cost. A brief timeline of MACRA: This all started when Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX) introduced MACRA into Congress.
Your statement that there was no response from national organizations is incorrect. Every medical association I am aware of (including the ones you listed) spoke out against it, lobbied against it, and tried to...

TN Woman Breaks a World Record for Running a Marathon - in High Heels
Running a marathon is hard. It takes months of training, a strict eye on your diet, and an ironclad mindset to conquer the grueling 26.2-mile race. Now, imagine doing it in high heels. That’s what Irene Sewell, a recruiter at a physical therapy office in Chattanooga, TN, decided to do more than a year ago. Guinness sent her a book which said heel height must be 2.75 inches and width 1.5 centimeters, and that she must complete the marathon within 7.5 hours, she told KLEW.
|
|
Running heels and Dr. Lee Cohen |
It’s a tough record to beat, because heels have no shock absorption and can lead to some serious damage to the toes and knees when running, Dr. Lee Cohen, a sports podiatrist, told Women’s Running. The cutoff time to set the record was 7.5 hours, and she nearly missed it. But at 7 hours and 28 minutes, she crossed the finish line, exhausted and triumphant, Nooga.com reported.
