PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Things to Consider When Retiring from Practice
4. How will you spend your time in retirement? This is more essential for physicians than other professions. Medicine is often a personal calling. Many physicians have foregone hobbies and personal time in exchange for clinical training, practice building, and patient care. A gerontologist friend once told me, "retiring from medicine without retiring to something is risky." And he added, "For many of us, medicine has been a jealous mistress. We've missed many family events because of patient responsibilities." Study data indicates that for many physicians, their patient relationships are what they value most professionally. When those interactions and "thank-you's" no longer exist, there will be a void to fill.
