PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Wrestling Event Sanctioned for Using NY Podiatrist as On-Duty Doctor

A Staten Island charity wrestling show is on the ropes after its promoter's license was suspended for using a foot specialist as its on-duty doctor. But the show's organizer said he had no choice — no doctors approved by the state's Athletic Commission are willing to travel to the borough. Joe Bellini, who runs the Warriors of Wrestling school and organizes monthly shows, used Dr. Steven Abraham, a licensed podiatrist, to check on performers before an August charity show and be on-duty for medical care after the event's regular physician couldn't attend.

Dr. Steve Abraham

Under the rules, Warriors of Wrestling should have had a state-approved doctor on hand. Podiatrists don't get a general physician license under state law. But Abraham said he and Bellini thought his services would be satisfactory, especially since he's a licensed surgeon, teaches at Cornell University, is certified in wound care and has worked as a sports physician for 30 years." I have all the credentials and the capability and knowledge to handle everything," Abraham said.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
NE Podiatrist Steps Into Footsteps of Retiring DPM

Following in the footsteps of Dr. Fred James, first-year podiatrist Nathan Larson, DPM has joined the Lincoln Foot Clinic. While speaking at a conference, Larson was approached by Dr. Matthew Hahne, James’ partner, and was asked to join the team as James was retiring. “It seemed like a good fit,” Larson said. He hit the ground running doing surgeries every week since his first week in the business. Larson began in the first part of July, he said.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
UK Podiatrist's Non-Profit Nominated for FSB Surrey Award

Undefeeted by Diabetes, an Oxted-based not-for-profit organization run by husband and wife Peter and Tina Allton, has been shortlisted as a finalist at the prestigious Federation of Small Businesses’ Surrey Awards. The organization also organizes a network of podiatrists around the UK. With its main UK partners JDRF UK and LBG Medical, it aims to make free foot check-ups available to diabetes sufferers and those at risk of developing it.

Tina and Peter Allton

Having qualified as a podiatrist in 1988, Peter Allton has 27 years of experience and has treated over 200,000 feet. Peter Allton said, “My life changed five years ago when I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and I soon became aware of how difficult the condition is to manage. When my 11-year-old daughter Jasmine was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, we soon became aware that there is little in the way of publicly available advice for diabetes sufferers.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: ICD-10 Code for Atrophy of Fat Pad

Any suggestions for ICD-10 code for atrophy of fat pad? We previously used ICD-9 709.09 (dyschromia; other). No code comes up in the crosswalk on the APMA Coding Resource Center.

Julie Hoffman, Office of Scott Hoffman, DPM, Worthington, MN

Response: When I speak to providers and billers, I find that ICD-9 codes were often used incorrectly. Dyschromia is defined as an alteration of color in skin, hair, or nails. It has nothing to do with atrophy of the fat pad. In ICD-10, there is a code for hypertrophy of fat pad (M79.4). When it comes to diagnosing patients' conditions, the atrophy of a fat pad causing foot pain or metatarsalgia would have more appropriate diagnoses.

If you are looking for a skin condition, the ICD-9 code was ICD-9 709.8 (other specified disorders of skin). It crosswalks to ICD-10 as L98.8 (other specified disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: G Dock Dockery, DPM, Michael J King, DPM

Do yourself and your patient a favor and get a couple of really well-placed punch biopsies of the condition. Send them to a certified dermatopathology laboratory (like Bako Pathology) and get a definitive diagnosis (maybe it's psoriasis). Then you can initiate the correct treatment program.

G Dock Dockery, DPM, Seattle, WA

I have had great success with Kamea G from Tetra for such problems. Kamea G used under occlusion has a great ability to debride and soften all in one. It is easy to use and apply with no mess or fuss.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Stephen Musser, DPM, John F. Swaim, DPM

Try this approach: 1. Apply a topical moisturizing cream (say AmLactin/Eucerin) daily in the AM 2. Apply a topical high potency steroid ointment every PM for 2 weeks on, then 2 weeks off. Repeat the cycle as needed.

Stephen Musser, DPM, Cleveland, OH

Use Dr. Swaim's CalluSTOP twice daily, occlude one of the applications for 30 minutes with Saran wrap. The hyperkeratosis in these cases involves an inflammatory component, and this product addresses that aspect.

John F. Swaim, DPM, Red Bluff, CA

Disclosure: Dr. Swaim is the owner of the company manufacturing CalluSTOP.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Timothy P. Shea, DPM

Congratulations to Dr. Ron Uhlman on his award as Volunteer of the Decade. It was the efforts and professionalism of Dr. Uhlman, working at Kaiser Vallejo, as one their first podiatrists in the system, that allowed new graduates like me 42 years ago to be able to rotate through and participate in the departments of general surgery and medicine on the Vallejo Campus Hospital.

Many productive days and nights were spent in the emergency room treating many different sorts of general and extremity trauma. They were the local center for automobile and...
