CA Podiatrist Named Volunteer of the Decade  

 

When the Benicia Police Department decided to give Ron “Doc” Uhlman the Volunteer of the Decade award last week, they thought the best way to get him down to the city hall ceremony was to trick him. Telling the notoriously humble volunteer that he’d be receiving his pin for working with the department, instead, Benicia Police Chief Erik Upson presented Uhlman with an award honoring him for his 20 years of hard work. “This department loves him across the board,” Upson later said of Uhlman. “He does so much, with so much humility, that there’s really nothing that he won’t do to help the officers or the staff out here — whatever it takes.

“And this is a retired doctor who’s basically willing to do whatever to support this department, small and big,” Upson added. Uhlman originally grew up in Ferguson, MS and went into the medical field in Springfield before heading to San Diego and eventually San Francisco for podiatry school. Uhlman started his residency program at Kaiser Pemanente in Vallejo, working there for 28 years, while maintaining nighttime volunteer commitments first at the Benicia Fire Department, then later the Benicia Police Department.
