New Advances Mean Less Amputations for Diabetics: DC Podiatrist
“The majority of lower-extremity amputations are preceded by a reoccurring foot sore or an ulcer that won’t heal,” says John S. Steinberg, DPM, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member and Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. “Patients do best when they take charge of their foot health with the help of a foot and ankle surgeon.”

IL Podiatrists and Scholl Students Volunteer at Chicago Marathon
The 2024 Chicago Marathon took place on Sunday October 13th. Podiatry was again well represented as an integral part of the marathon medical team. As in previous years, AAPSM Fellows Jeffrey Baker, DPM of the Weil Foot & Ankle Institute and Michael Chin, DPM of the Running Institute were podiatry co-coordinators for the event.

Other volunteers were Regan Bond, DPM, Matthew Diamond, DPM, Henry Greenberg, DPM, Paras Parekh, DPM, and Hector Santiago, DPM. Volunteering as well were podiatric medical students from the AAPSM Scholl Chapter. The podiatry volunteers were stationed at two medical tents at the finish line area and provided medical care to 161 runners throughout the day.

Steven Cooperman, DPM, MBA has joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital [LCRH) in Somerset, Kentucky. Dr. Cooperman earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree with highest honors from Western University of Health Sciences. He also holds an MBA from Franklin Pierce University.

ACPPS Meeting Features Live MIS Demonstration on Attendee
At a recent minimally invasive training cadaver lab in Chicago, hosted by the American College of Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons (ACPPS), one of the podiatry registrants was limping due to painful, advanced, longstanding hammertoes. Hartley Miltchin, DPM, a master instructor and licensed podiatrist in Illinois, was asked to demonstrate MIS hammertoe procedures on this attending podiatric physician.

Dr. Miltchin successfully corrected four rigid hammertoes, allowing all 32 registrants to observe. This was possible thanks to the Advanced Surgical Center, which provided surgical suites, sterile podiatric surgical instruments, and surgical staff. A live surgical procedure has likely never been performed at a cadaver lab conference before.

Considering a Practice Change? Five Signs it May Not Be a Fit
Here are a few red flags to signal a new career opportunity might not be the right move.
2. High turnover rates
Investigate completely the turnover rates within the organization and your specific department. A high turnover rate among physicians or staff could suggest underlying issues such as poor management, lack of fiscal/political support, or an unhealthy work environment. It’s essential to understand why previous employees left and if the practice has taken steps to address any cultural/resource issues. Speaking with current and former employees can provide valuable insights and should be a must in your evaluation process.

Query: Diabetic Footwear A5500, A5514
I have a DME question, specifically about A5500, A5514. I have a patient who sees an endocrinologist (MD) for diabetes; they have not seen this MD in person in over one year and it has been via telemedicine. They have been examined in this office by a DPM. All the info I see from Medicare (article A52501) is that MD visits need to be in person for a certifying statement.
The patient has been seen in person by a PA at their family practice office, but they are not being treated for diabetes. I want to make sure I am following the rules correctly; this person is not able to obtain DM shoes until they are seen in person by an MD treating their diabetes. I appreciate all input.

I was pleasantly surprised to see an article in the October issue of Costco Connection that featured podiatrists as experts on plantar fasciitis with no mention of foot specialists holding any other degree. I was equally surprised to learn that the distribution of this monthly magazine is about 15 million to Costco Executive members per month and has a readership of over 30 million.

If APMA promotes an Annual Comprehensive Diabetes Prevention Foot Examination, I hope they also promote that the exam is not covered by insurance, unless things have changed since this issue was also brought up in a post on PM News back on 07/09/2021.
It should be a covered exam just like an annual eye exam for at-risk patients, which would save limbs and lives not to mention save money for insurance companies. First things first. Get insurance companies to cover the exam, promote it, and then we'll be more than happy to perform them.

It seems that not a day goes by without another MCR Part C plan being accused of fraud or abuse for any number of reasons. The main issue for most providers is that despite them supposedly being legally obligated to follow the fee-for-service MCR LCD for their prior authorization requirements, they often do not. Dr. Purdy's case in point, the patient had a TMA and now requires a toe filler (L5000); this should be a no-brainer based on the lower limb prosthetic LCD.
Despite his obtaining a P/A for this particular case, the claim was still denied. This should never be allowed and fortunately recently passed legislation now enforces P/A requirements of these "Advantage" plans to follow...
