Aussie Podiatrist Drowns Trying to Save His Teen Sons
A 'hero' father who died trying to rescue his teenage sons at a popular Western Australian beach has been identified as an award-winning podiatrist. Despite having no swimming experience, Ashwin Bhalsod, 55, ran into the waves at Yallingup beach, in the state's southwest, around 5.30pm on Saturday to help his kids, aged 13 and 15.

Police said Bhalsod, who was visiting the area from Perth, rushed to the aid of his children as he feared they were struggling - when they were actually fine. Bystanders pulled the father-of-two from the water and attempted to resuscitate him as emergency services raced to the scene, but he could not be saved.

CA Podiatrist to Serve as President of Keck School of Medicine of USC's Faculty
David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California, became the first podiatrist to serve as President of the school's Faculty Council. Representing more than 2,300 faculty, the President and Faculty Council are the official voice of faculty governance to USC leadership.

McClain Labs Holds Hands-on Biopsy Training for Residents and Students
In September 2022, McClain Laboratories conducted lectures and hands-on biopsy workshops at two podiatry training locations. The first was for the podiatry residents at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and the second was for the third year students at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in Manhattan, NY. By the end of the workshop, the participants were able to use four different instruments to accomplish shave and punch biopsies.

A total of twenty-four doctors and students received a lecture by Steve A. McClain, MD, the owner and Medical Director of McClain Laboratories, LLC. “It was such a pleasure to assist these physicians and students as they learned and practiced biopsy techniques on animal skin,” said Paul Langer, Executive Vice President of McClain Laboratories.

All of the leaders who have voiced their opinions here can be heroes if they swallow their hubris, their pride in “their board” and work together toward the common goal of merging ABPM and ABFAS into one board. We are living at a time when polarization has become toxic. We all need to see that the aspirations for our profession are far more important than our tribes within it. Yes, those who have worked so very hard over the years to build ABPM/ABFAS into the sophisticated institutions that they are today are and should forever be lauded for that groundbreaking work and all that it has accomplished. Their legacy will live on. Both boards have accomplished so much.
It’s now time to take the next step, for the sake of the entire profession. That step will not diminish what you all have accomplished. It will, in fact, add to it and move it forward, to create a whole that will become much larger and more powerful than the sum of its parts. Will this merger be difficult? You bet it will. But I believe the end result will be a single cohesive entity, poised for the future, far more useful and less divisive for the profession than these 2 separate boards currently are. CAQs within a merged board will make much more sense. I look forward to the day when all of these leaders are sitting at one table, managing a board certification process that unifies the profession into a single, much more powerful and representative entity.

Kudos to the American College of Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons and to Sev Hrywnak DPM, MD for providing a very nice 25-hour continuing education course last weekend in Chicago entitled "Internal Medicine Review". This was (just my opinion) a barebones affair with continental breakfast only offered daily. The faculty consisted of a mix of MDs as well as DPM-MDs, and was well attended. Best of all was the $25 registration fee. WELL DONE!

RE: MCR Advantage Plan Again Found with its Hand in the "Cookie Jar"

A recently reported OIG study found that the Highmark Medicare Advantage plan was the latest in a slew of previously reported MCR Advantage plans to provide unsubstantiated data to CMS. This data was then used to obtain higher payments than they were supposed to receive ($800K) from CMS for managing their MCR Advantage Plans for the time specified in the report. What is the source of the data which is fraudulently manipulated? Its source is from providers and the charts we elect to provide to the carrier, which the carriers then change and submit to CMS.
There have been relatively few complaints posted in many podiatric and other medical forums in comparison to the barrage of requests from MCR Advantage plans. However, when I speak with most doctors (MD/DO/DPM) they all acknowledge they have complied with these endless requests, ...
