Flip-Flops Not for Extended Wear: Aussie Podiatrist

Podiatrists are warning against wearing flip-flops as your permanent pair of shoes as they could be costing you your health. Podiatrist Jemma Riddiford said, particularly in the summer months, podiatrists such as herself recognized the temptation to wear thongs full-time. "If you're going to be doing any extended periods of standing or walking, it's better to wear a stronger pair of shoes that will support the feet," she said.

Jemma Riddiford

"The more supported and enclosed the feet are, the less prone you are to developing overuse conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, and the like. There's also less chance of sustaining injuries from the elements, and corns, callus, and cracks growing. It's all about being sensible and protecting the feet."

IL Podiatrist Uses TENEX Health TX for Achilles Injuries

Patients suffering from debilitating tendon injuries, such as tennis elbow and Achilles heel, can now experience quick, long-lasting pain relief with a new procedure, TENEX Health TX, a minimally invasive treatment developed in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic. The procedure takes 20 minutes or less under a local anesthetic, requires only a small bandage to close the micro-incision, and offers quick recovery time, usually six weeks or less. Ultrasound imaging identifies the damaged tissue, and a small MicroTip delivers ultrasonic energy to break down and remove it.

"(Patients) have reported experiencing a nearly painless treatment, a quick recovery and lasting pain relief,” says Dr. Lee Simeone, a podiatrist using the technology to treat Achilles heel. I believe this new option will become the standard of care in treating damaged tendon tissue, the source of tendon pain.”

Retired IA Podiatrist Captains Boat at River Festival

Downtown visitors were cruising more than Fourth Street during this year's annual Tour de 'Loo. A fleet of pontoon boats carried people up and down the Cedar River as part of Main Street Waterloo's showcase of developing and behind-the-scenes downtown attractions. Dr. Bill Gronen, a retired podiatrist and former city councilman, captained the colorful Sirena de la Riviera up the still waters on what turned out to be a beautiful evening.

Dr. William Gronen

"The rubber dam has made a huge difference," said Gronen, referring to a Vision Iowa project that helped raise the upstream river level. "It has reduced the current and made it a lot safer," Gronen said. "It has given us boatable water even with the dry weather."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
3 Signs That You Should Stop Speaking

People often give physical cues that they are tired of listening and want a chance to speak. Be aware of these signals because they are clues you should stop talking and give the other person an opportunity to share. Watch for these signs:

1. Taking a noticeably deeper breath because they think they’re going to get to talk. (Talking requires more oxygen than listening.)
2. Opening their mouths—as if to speak—and quickly closing them if you keep talking.
3. Raising an index finger as if to pose a question or objection. That behavior is rooted in our early school days, when we raised our hands to be called on.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM

The photo of the plantar foot reveals several lesions ranging from tan to brown to black. The lesion biopsied certainly meets criteria for a high index of suspicion. It is curious how the lesion became so deeply pigmented in just two months. The diagnosis is completely benign. Dermoscopy actually has its value before a biopsy is done, as its primary use is to avoid unnecessary biopsy. One a biopsy is done, however, dermoscopy is nullified. You may use dermoscopy to evaluate the remaining lesions and what is left of the biopsied lesion. Studies show that the reliability of dermoscopy is related very much to the examiner's experience. These lesions should be photographed and monitored for change on a 6-month basis.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From:  Richard A. Simmons, DPM

In no way do I consider myself an expert on technology, HIPAA, OCR, etc., however, I have a very difficult time accepting this statement: “Based upon the known risks of using a smartphone, and the availability of low-cost digital cameras that can capture patient images, if you use a smart phone to take digital pictures, you are not doing your best.” At best, the statement is based on the theory that we have loaded our smart phones with malicious apps. As it glorifies the low-cost digital camera, the statement ignores the simple fact that these cameras are not encrypted and contain removable memory cards.

If I misplace my encrypted iPhone, I can have the memory erased remotely by Apple’s technology. If I misplace a low-cost camera, I am simply at the mercy of the person who finds it. Regardless of the technology, I do recommend transferring digital images into the secure environment of your server as soon as possible.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Fred Huss, DPM

Dr. Brody's assertion that many apps are malicious in both the App Store and Google Play is inaccurate. While Google Play is more secure, the Android platform has the lion's share of malware apps. To be exact, 79% of all malware apps are found on the Android OS; the rest are found mainly on the Symbian OS, with only 0.7% on iOS.

A tiny fragment of iOS apps have ever been found in the wild. And as I understand, they have been found before any damage to the ecosystem.  There are a numbers of ways to make your smartphone more secure. Just type in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP )
From: Terrance J. Mueller, DPM

3-D printers like MakerBot (recently acquired by Stratasys) are now going mainstream. Newer materials with which to print orthotics/prosthetics-even shoes!-make production more feasible.

First, you need a 3-D scanner, and then you need software/designs with which to complete the customized device. NB: it could take HOURS with a MakerBot!

My consulting lab has recently developed a 4-D scanner (does gait analysis in real time), with software for $500 - capable of leg/ankle/foot 360 degree scans (as opposed to "2.5-D" scanners). Our field tests of 3-D printers using renewable materials are nearing completion. Costs are coming down monthy - an exciting time for biomechanical therapeutics!
