PICA Awards Full-Tuition Scholarships to BUSPM Student

This year’s recipient of the PICA full-tuition scholarship is second year student Rovern Anthony at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine (BUSPM). Rovern is currently a Biochemistry Teaching Assistant and serves as President-Elect of the Florida Podiatric Medical Student Association. She is the first in her family to pursue higher education. Rovern has a strong passion for helping others and giving the underserved population a voice to be heard. She was first introduced to the field of podiatry as a wound care nurse and plans to continue her commitment to the profession by providing treatment to high-risk patient groups such as the elderly and those with diabetes.

CA Podiatrist Discusses Gout

You notice an enlarged, painful big toe. It could be gout. Gorged on wine and steak? The painful aftermath could be gout, a type of arthritis that often affects the joint of the big toe. Foods high in purine—a chemical compound found in red meats, fish, and certain alcohol—can trigger an attack by raising levels of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is normally excreted through urine, but is overproduced or under-excreted in some people. “You’ll see the deposition of the uric acid in the joint, most commonly the big toe or the ankle,” says Bob Baravarian, DPM, a podiatric foot and ankle specialist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

Dr. Bob Baravarian

“The patient will wake up with a hard, red, swollen joint. It’s extremely painful,” said Dr. Baravarian. A doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs for short-term relief and medicines to reduce uric acid production. You may also need to follow a low-purine diet for long-term prevention.

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS
Retired OH Podiatrist Pens First Novel

Retired Mansfield podiatrist Larry Zimmerman, DPM has written his first novel, Becca's Place. His book is an inspirational novel of romance and tragedy involving Wat, a handsome grad student raised on a farm; Dr. Becca Bloom, a childhood friend who loves him dearly; and Priscilla, a beautiful New York City socialite.

Dr. Larry Zimmerman

Based in Ohio and New York, one of the tragedies in the book actually happened to a young man Zimmerman said he knew in high school. "I would describe it as an inspirational novel. One of my readers compared it to a Nicholas Sparks novel, another said it would be something good for a teenage girl to read," he said.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
UK Podiatrist to Climb Mount Everest for Charity

For Helen Holmes, one of the podiatrists at LFW Podiatry in Ilkley, the journey began a number of years ago when her dad developed vascular dementia on top of a previous diagnosis of diabetes. As her dad deteriorated, Helen found that helping him with his foot care not only helped him but provided a close bond between the two of them, and sparked an interest for Helen to study and train as a podiatrist.

Helen Holmes

Helen is a avid walker and when she was given the opportunity to climb beyond base camp on Everest, she chose to do it in special memory of her dad, who she says would be so proud of her achievement. In memory of her dad, Helen will be raising funds for Dementia UK, a specialist dementia nurse charity. The charity's Admiral Nurses provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
RE: Effective AR Management Strategies

There are scores of effective AR management strategies, proven by experts of the medical billing industry, which have helped healthcare organizations to cut through the noise and manage their financial health.

3. Mark procedures upfront: Once you document and mark the procedures of managing the AR, it ensures immense clarity and consistency. Ensure that your procedure has mentioned all of the following: invoicing dates, necessary data inclusions, recordkeeping procedures, follow-up procedures, and collection methods for the pending payments.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Steven Spinner, DPM

The continued arrogance and persistence of Lee Rogers in his passing himself off as the savior of our profession continues to amaze. The recent AACPM statement "seemingly opposing" his CAQ in surgery just mirrors the sentiment of every other major stakeholder in our profession. His continued full-frontal attack on ABFAS as having "an abysmal pass rate for a board which holds itself out to be the gatekeeper to operating rooms across the country" is at the very least untrue on both accounts, and at its worst is unethical and unprofessional.

Someone needs to remind Dr. Rogers of what the true mission of board certification actually is...the protection of the public. It is not to increase recognition for the podiatrist to increase personal gain. It is also counterproductive to offer a CAQ in surgery by a medicine board...a move that would be immediately sanctioned by our allopathic colleagues. The patient will not recognize the difference between true certification in surgery and a CAQ in surgery.

This confusion will only continue to be unfair to the patient seeking a surgeon who actually has demonstrated his or her competence through a rigorous certification process. A process that actually evaluates competence in the performance of surgery. It will also be detrimental to our standing in the medical community when it is realized that our profession has sanctioned, by our inactivity, this bogus CAQ.

Steven Spinner, DPM, Plantation, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM

The derisive commentary of Dr. Lee Rogers with regard to the AACPM was the classic strawman argument so often used by politicians rather than academics. I find myself in agreement with Dr.  Oloff. The comment was insulting to our profession.

Many of the old podiatrists such as Dr. Oloff have watched the incredible growth of this profession and concurrently, the increasing acceptance and incorporation of podiatry in medicine. Young practitioners cannot possibly imagine the time past when a podiatrist could not
prescribe medications, administer an injection, perform surgery, or...
