Walk the Aisles to Reduce Leg Edema While Flying: NY Podiatrist
If you've ever noticed that your feet look and feel unusually swollen when you're flying, you're not alone. Feet swelling while flying is pretty common, and according to Nelya Lobkova, DPM, a podiatrist based in New York and founder of Step Up Footcare, it's due to your feet being down for extended periods without movement. "The muscles in our legs aren't working, and the veins in our lower body need to work harder to get the blood back towards the heart," she explains. "When the blood pools on the veins, it causes swelling—literally, fluid build up—in the legs."
|
Dr. Nelya Lobkova |
Dr. Lobkova suggests walking up and down the aisles in the cabin two or three times. "Standing and walking, as well as light stretching, during a flight wakes up the muscles around the veins to pump harder and help push the blood flow back up toward the heart," she says. In particular, she advises giving the calf muscles a good stretch while you're up. Remember, the calf muscle is the biggest muscle in the legs, so stretching it will be most effective in helping reduce foot swelling while flying.

PODIATRIC PODCASTS |
VA Podiatrist Interviews NFL Kicker Mark Moseley on Foot Health
Ben Pearl, DPM interviewed former NFL kicker Mark Moseley on his podcast Fit Foot U last weekend. Moseley had a toe injury which Dr. Pearl examined and diagnosed as an arthritic toe with a subungual hematoma. Pearl showed him some toe mobility exercises, discussed care of the nail, and dispensed a TT3 turf toe splint which he developed. Moseley, now 74, stays healthy by running on a treadmill a few miles a day and doing farm work. The following video reviews Pearl's exam and features Moseley coaching Pearl through soccer style kicking:
|
(L-R) Dr. Ben Pearl and Mark Mosely |
Mosely was a straight ahead kicker but was able to teach both styles of place kicking. He was the only kicker to ever be named MVP in a season. Like Pearl, he also had an invention which was a two-sided kicking tee for both kickoffs and field goals.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
RE: Effective AR Management Strategies
There are scores of effective AR management strategies, proven by experts of the medical billing industry, which have helped healthcare organizations to cut through the noise and manage their financial health.
2. Right key Performance indicators for the long win: Consider these account performance metrics when it comes to the streamlining of accounts receivables process:
-
Collection Effective Index: Ensure that the CEI is close to the mark of 100, which acts as an indicator that you are successfully collecting payments from all of your patients.
-
Average Days Delinquent: The ADD refers to the average of the days since the patient’s payment is pending. You have to try to keep this score as minimum as possible for a smooth collection process.
-
Days Sales Outstanding: This refers to the time recorded to collect the payments. The ideal DSO should be less than 30 days so ensure to keep the scale managed by your in-house team.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: Lawrence Oloff, DPM
Every leadership group in our profession has weighed in on the CAQ in surgery proposal by ABPM, and the response has been a resounding NO. Nevertheless, Lee Rogers has continued to push this agenda forward. One really has to begin to question the intent of a proposal that is rejected by the entire profession? Deft ears? Self-aggrandizement?
Why do we need board certification? It has two purposes:
- “Board certified doctors demonstrate their desire to practice at the top of their profession and deliver high-quality care to...
