PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
Diabetics Need to Inspect Feet Daily: OK Podiatrist
When you think about diabetes, podiatry probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Still, a doctor at the Lawton Community Health Center said they’re an integral part of diabetes education and care. John Cauthon, DPM, a podiatrist at LCHC, said they want to see diabetes patients early so they can prevent foot problems. “Prevention looks like daily maintenance, care, attention to detail,” Dr. Cauthon said. “In reference to footwear, appropriate socks, things that matter as far as not being barefoot in their home, always having on some kind of shoe gear, whether it be outside or inside and hygiene.”
|
Dr. John Cauthon |
He said people with diabetes also need to inspect their feet daily. Dr. Cauthon said diabetes control is the first thing he talks to them about. “If diabetes is out of control, it becomes an issue,” he said. “So managing diabetes is number one. Secondarily is the preventative aspect of it. Prevention is things that we discussed along numerous other things that we discuss when they come in and thirdly is early detection and treatment.”

HOSPITAL NEWS |
OK Hospital Adds Podiatry Department
Grady Memorial Hospital has announced it is expanding its services with the addition of comprehensive orthopedic and podiatry departments. “These new services will provide residents with advanced care for musculoskeletal and foot-related conditions, ensuring patients receive the specialized treatment they need close to home and in a timely manner,” hospital Assistant Administrator Ty Pool said.
|
Grady Memorial Hospital |
The podiatry department will focus on the medical and surgical treatment of foot and ankle conditions, including a diabetic and non-diabetic wound specialist “which few specialists exist in Oklahoma,” Pool said.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
MA Podiatrist Recommends Foot Stretcher for Plantar Fasciitis
HuffPost recently asked podiatrists to recommend over-the-counter solutions for dealing with foot pain — specifically the discomfort caused by the very common condition plantar fasciitis. We learned from podiatrist Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, who is also president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics, that stretching before most physical activities can truly make the most difference when it comes to foot pain, and devices like this incredibly well-rated and podiatrist-recommended foot stretcher can help.
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro |
“The best a person can do is stretch the posterior column which runs from the hamstring down to the calf, to the Achilles and through the bottom of the foot to connect to the plantar fascia,” Dr. DeCaro says.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
IN Podiatrist Provides Advice on Choosing Orthopedic Shoes
Investing in the right orthopedic shoes can help enhance your quality of life, often assisting with actions such as walking and standing by improving balance and alleviating pain associated with diabetic neuropathy of the foot, says Michael Nirenberg, DPM, clinical and forensic podiatrist at Friendly Footcare in Indiana. “At other times, these shoes may reduce problems from worsening or developing in the first place.”
|
Dr. Michael Nirenberg |
“Keep in mind that there is no shoe that is right for everyone so you need to make sure the shoe you buy is comfortable and correctly-fit for each person’s own foot,” Dr. Nirenberg says, adding that our left and right feet are not mirror images of each other and may sometimes be a different size. “A shoe that fits one of your feet well may not be right for your other foot.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips for Navigating the ACO Landscape
If a medical practice is looking to join an ACO in 2025, they should start their considerations well in advance so they can stay ahead of this year’s August 1st deadline for participation in CMS models in 2025. This timeline allows for comprehensive research and analysis, ensuring that practices align with an ACO that best suits their needs. ACOs can also have a lot of similarities on paper, but with a deliberate approach, providers can avoid the pitfalls of rushing into a decision and instead focus on understanding what each ACO offers, how they manage and operate, and speak to references within the network.
2. ACO features to evaluate - When evaluating potential ACOs, the duration of their existence, performance history, and how they share savings with practices become critical factors. Providers should delve into the specifics of each ACO's operation, such as their approach to risk adjustment – an area where many practices struggle. An ACO that offers services such as risk adjustment and care management can significantly benefit a practice navigating the complexities of value-based care.
Another vital consideration is the level of integration the ACO has with a practice's operations. While some offer guidance or more hands-off support, other ACOs offer staff and specific programmatic support. Providers should seek ACOs that actively engage with their practices, offering the right level of support and guidance as they transition to value-based care.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) -PART 1A |
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
Dr. Purdy has posted that he would love to see a national APMA public relations campaign in the future if it is possible. So would I and many others. And it is possible. One means is teaming up with collaborating partners to develop robust campaigns that present podiatrists as the nation's preferred foot and ankle specialists. For example, I am happy to report the potential for a collaborative national public health improvement campaign of APMA members teamed up with Lions Clubs International (LCI) members.
The Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) Alliance, a 501(c)3 non-profit charity, has informed APMA that it has developed a collaborative diabetes limb saving program with LCI administrators and local Lions Clubs members. There are about 1.4 million members worldwide, and Lions members support community- based programs that enhance prevention, control, and management of diabetes and its complications - two of which complications are diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and peripheral artery disease (PAD).
There are potential donor funds and LCI granting programs that potentially can help defray costs. (See grant information: LCIF Empowering Service: Diabetes) What's more, LCI leader members have expressed interest in advancing collaborative efforts with APMA to provide the Lions Hunt for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Free Foot Screening Program. APMA is successfully putting podiatry in the limelight through collaborative efforts with the American Diabetes Association (ADA). We shall see if an APMA-LCI team up can also be worked out.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I wonder if Jon’s letter was written tongue in cheek. If accurate, Jon’s report about a recent encounter with a secret agent from APMA who assured Jon there are changes a comin’ at APMA headquarters gives cause for celebration. That’s tongue in cheek. If what Jon was told is indeed true, and why should we doubt anything out of the mouth of an unnamed secret APMA leader, then I am grateful that the spirit of Deep Throat is alive and well in Washington, DC. One difference between the original Deep Throat and the APMA Deep Throat is that the current mole is wearing old Rohadur orthotics posted to the casts to throw off younger potential trackers.
But there is a disparity between these new APMA promises and those made in the waning moments of the Nixon administration. Deep Throat’s assertions proved to be true. Both the current APMA Deep Throat and the Watergate Deep Throat were accurate when they presently advised Purdy and in...
