Trendy Ballarina Flats are "Worst Offender": CA Podiatrist
Over the past few months, ballet flats have been extremely on pointe in the fashion world, coming back into trend as celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Katie Holmes have all sported the look this summer. California-based podiatrist Robert Khorramian, DPM declared that ballet flats were some of the most detrimental shoes for your feet — in fact, he labeled them “the worst offender.”
|
Dr. Robert Khorramian |
Dr. Khorramian explained that this is because the shoes simply do not provide enough support, something that WebMD also noted in its own evaluation. The doctor said wearing and walking in ballet flats for a long period of time “causes metatarsalgia neuroma and plantar fasciitis” and can “destroy” the fatty tissue underneath the foot. If the fatty tissue underneath the foot is worn down, it can cause unsightly and uncomfortable problems like corns and calluses, Khorramian noted.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
8 Tips to Improve Patient Satisfaction
It’s more important than ever to be able to track and monitor patient satisfaction and take steps to make improvements to meet the changing expectations of patients. To effectively gauge what patients think and identify areas for improvement, here are best practices to follow.
2. Be Timely
For a post-visit patient survey, send it out within 24 to 48 hours. The sooner the better. You want to strike while patients remember their experience.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Time to Unionize
From: Lloyd Bardfeld, DPM
Auto workers on strike, Starbucks have unions, tech workers have unions, nurses have unions. I could go on and on. Doctors are not allowed to unionize… says who? Our corrupt politicians? We have been getting squeezed for many years. Surgical fees have become a joke. Private practice is going away. Hospitals and healthcare corporations are ruining us and sucking the pleasure out of practicing.
We are among the strongest groups in America. All we do is complain. When I chose podiatry as a profession, one of my main reasons was that I knew I would be working for myself. Those days are over. It’s time for us to get together with MDs and DOs and form a powerful union.
Lloyd Bardfeld, DPM, Far Rockaway, NY

RE: Use of the Term "Podiatry"
From: Donald R Blum, DPM, JD
As the discussion evolves about using the term "podiatry", I want to throw in the mix the following from Kentucky's, Rood and Riddle Equine Vets which use this term in their website: "Meet Your Podiatry Equine Veterinary Care Team", a practice of five DVMs and staff people. Radkin Equine Vet's website: Radkin Equine Podiatry

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE) - PART 1 A |
From: Jeffrey Klirsfeld, DPM
Regarding Aaron Rodger’s injury or any lower extremity injury, we as podiatrists almost need a lesson in field engineering. My son went to Penn State University (PSU). PSU had a major in turf and field composition. When we see our sports injuries, we need to ask the patients what field, type of field, shoe, etc. is being used. I wonder if he was practicing on a natural field and then went to the stadium turf field. I know Lambeau field was bluegrass natural. Was he not familiar enough with the turf? Who knows but I guess we need to educate our patients on that matter from shoes to biomechanics on turf to natural fields.
Jeffrey Klirsfeld, DPM, Levittown, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE) -PART 1 B |
From: Joe Boylan, DPM
My local community is in a debate regarding installation of another ball field with artificial surface or using natural grass. Dr. McLean states, “The studies are beginning to accumulate …” against the use of artificial surfaces due to higher incidence of injury. If these published or preliminary studies exist, could anyone cite where I can find them?
Joe Boylan, DPM, Ridgewood, NJ

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CANADIAN PODIATRY) |
From: Bruce Ramsden, DPM
On behalf of the Ontario Podiatric Medical Association, I'm writing to correct statements made in "The Sad State of Podiatry in Ontario" published in the September 19 edition of PM News. There were two principle reasons for the Ontario government opting for a chiropody model of foot care in the late 1970s. One was that the UK chiropody model as it then existed was thought by the government-of-the-day to be a better fit with Ontario's hospital-centric healthcare delivery paradigm as it was at the time. While orthopedic surgeons may have supported that decision, there is no evidence that such support had a major impact.
The second reason was that there was an insufficient supply of podiatrists to respond to the demand for foot care and no likelihood that the supply-demand gap would be closed. A cause of that supply-demand gap was that no podiatry education program existed in Canada. Having made this decision to introduce a chiropody model, the Ontario government committed...
