It was an exciting day for students in the medical community as LECOM hosted their white coat ceremonies on Saturday. The first ceremony was historic as it honored the first class from LECOM's Podiatric School of Medicine.

The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 38th Annual Student Writing Competition.

All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

WA Nurse to Provide Podiatry Services at Prosser Orthopedic Center
Samantha Pedersen, an advanced registered nurse practitioner, has joined Prosser Memorial Health and will be providing podiatry services at Prosser Orthopedic Center and wound care at Prosser Memorial Hospital.
Pedersen received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Seattle University and her doctor of nursing degree from Washington State University. For the past few years, she has worked as a registered nurse at various medical facilities in Washington.

Query: OTC Ankle Brace
My patient would like to purchase an ankle brace from our office for her daughter. They are looking for an over-the-counter (OTC) device, not a custom made device. She would like to submit it to insurance. We have not actually seen the daughter as a patient, so there are no actually notes of an encounter. Can I prescribe and bill for an OTC stirrup ankle brace in this situation?

Response: For a doctor to prescribe any treatment, medication, or device, there has to be a good faith examination performed attesting to the need for, in this case, an ankle brace. If there is no documentation, then there is no proof of medical necessity.
Secondly, if there is no chart, then technically you do not have documented and signed consent to treat this patient. Is there some implied determination that you agree that this is the best treatment for her unknown ankle condition? What if the brace is not the correct treatment option? Could you be liable? I’ll let the panel attorneys deal with that issue.
Your best bet is to have the patient go the pharmacy, or buy one online.

RE: The Sad State of Podiatry in Ontario, Canada

In Ontario, Canada, podiatrists are especially pessimistic about the podiatry profession. In 1983, there were 100+ podiatrists registered to practice here. Forty years later, there are now 60+ podiatrists registered to practice in Ontario, Canada. The very brief history of this situation is due to podiatrists performing osseous surgery that did not go well. The patients with poor results would see orthopaedic surgeons and sometimes the orthopods would perform corrective revision surgery.

The patients and the orthopaedic surgeons complained to the Minister of Health, and the profession was shut down August 1, 1993. DPMs, after this date, could register as chiropodists with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. To keep the profession buried, a DPM registered as a chiropodist, implanted experimental, modified copies of the HyProCure implant on unsuspecting patients. The modified copy is on the left.

It is unfortunate that this discourse with the APMA over its lack of leadership and advocacy for podiatrists has become so public; however, the APMA leadership also refuses to engage with the ABPM. In fact, several emails sent to Dr. Jim Christina and Dr. Sylvia Virbulis never even received a response. Nor were they shared with the BOT.
But I do have to point out the selective response from the APMA and CPME to Dr. Ribotsky's comments. Regarding board certification, the APMA wrote that, "It would be highly inappropriate and unacceptable for APMA to attempt to exert any control over this activity." This statement is at odds with the fact that Dr. Christina, the executive director of the APMA, was appointed as an ex-officio member of the ad hoc Specialty Board Recognition Committee (SBRC) charged with rewriting...

Up-selling? You mean as in interventional radiologists and cardiologists recommending and performing unnecessary procedures. Perhaps, you were contemplating orthopedic surgeons up-selling patients into unnecessary surgery? Are you referring to unnecessary spinal surgery? Unneeded hyperbaric oxygen and wound care management techniques with grafts and HBO?
If Dr. Roth did indeed “up-sell” a vulnerable patient, (and we know nothing about the circumstances to which Dr. Roth was referring), at least (so far as we know ), he did not do so at the potential endangerment of the patients' overall health and well-being.
So far as I’m aware, unnecessary orthotics do not cause stroke, vascular perforations, acute cardiac events, or paralysis. Up-selling by our physician colleagues does. Plastic surgeons say it best by their actions, you’ve got to pay to play. Dr. Roth, so long as his behavior is ethical, is entitled to practice in the same manner or in any reasonable manner he chooses.
