KSUCPM to Receive $10 Million Gift, Largest in University’s History
Kent State University this week announced that its College of Podiatric Medicine will receive a $10 million gift from The Podiatry Foundation — the largest single gift in the university’s history. The Kent State Board of Trustees voted during its Sept. 15 meeting to accept naming recognition for its Foot and Ankle Clinic in acknowledgement of the gift. As a result, the clinical space on the first floor of the college in Independence will be named The Podiatry Foundation Foot and Ankle Clinic. The college’s clinical space in Cleveland’s Midtown neighborhood will also feature the name.

The gift from the Independence-based foundation will fund scholarships, research, and continuing medical education programs within the College of Podiatric Medicine. “This gift is the first step in the foundation’s plan to be the predominant philanthropic source for all podiatric medical groups nationwide, including the nine current colleges of podiatric medicine, the several national podiatry organizations, the state podiatric medical associations, local academies in Ohio, and many allied groups,” The Podiatry Foundation Executive Director David Nicolanti said.

MA Podiatrist Explains the Rewards of Specializing in Podo-Pediatrics
Louis J. DeCaro, DPM is firm of the opinion that no one actually has good feet. Rather, experience tells him that everyone has one of 24 variations of bad feet. “That includes high arches, low arches, no arches … people come in and they think flat feet are the only bad feet,” said DeCaro, owner of Hatfield-based DeCaro Total Foot Care Center, referencing a chart of what he calls the ‘24 Foot Structures.’ “But you can have an arch that causes not foot pain, but back pain. So often, high-arch people have back pain, but they don’t realize it’s coming from their feet.”

“People often ask me why I do pediatrics,” he said. “And I tell them that one of the wonderful things I get to experience is when a child follows up who couldn’t walk, and I helped them walk; that’s got to be one of the most rewarding things in the world. To get a hug from a parent who tells me that their child is finally walking or is able to run or keep up with their friends … that’s really priceless.” Over the years, DeCaro has received many hugs like that.

End of In-office Surgeries Expected to Extend Canadian Hospital's Wait List
Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) will have another reason for long surgical wait times at the end of the month. On Sept. 30, the College of Physicians and Surgeons will be stopping in-office surgeries performed by pain management doctors and podiatrists. Kamloops’ only podiatrist, Sean Lehmann, DPM, MHA says this new policy poses an even bigger problem for RIH and other local surgical centers, which are already strained.

“The province is making decisions that makes that worse – I think the public needs to know that,” Dr. Lehmann told CFJC News. These doctors are fully licensed in B.C. as physicians and surgeons, and they have been performing surgeries in their offices for decades. Dr. Lehmann claims he has asked for evidence that shows surgeries have been done unsafely. “They have not produced any data that shows that these surgeries have been done unsafely for decades – so it seems to be a bit more about bureaucracy than a demonstrable need,” he said.

Aussie Podiatrist to Helm First Peoples Health Unit
Aboriginal scholar and podiatrist Professor James Charles has been appointed Director of Griffith University’s First Peoples Health Unit (FPHU). Having devoted his career to Aboriginal foot health and education, Professor Charles started at Griffith this week.

As FPHU Director, Dr. Charles will look to grow the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce and ensure the success of students throughout their study journey and into the workplace. “A lot of people are aware of cultural competence frameworks, but we need more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in health roles to provide an adequate level of cultural knowledge and understanding to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their communities,” he said.

Docs Press CMS for Permanent Telehealth Flexibility, Relief from Pay Cuts
Several doctor groups are pressing the Biden administration to not just extend Medicare telehealth reimbursement flexibilities through 2023 but for them to be made permanent. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed in the 2022 Physician Fee Schedule to extend telehealth flexibilities through 2023 instead of through the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, which is expected to run through this year. Doctor groups in comments on the rule, the deadline for which expired Monday, called for a permanent solution.
Doctor groups were also worried about a looming 3.75% cut in the 2022 Medicare conversion factor, which calculates reimbursement for procedures under fee-for-service. The cuts are mandated under a budget neutrality provision in Congress and comes after a pay bump from Congress that expires in 2022. MGMA said that the cuts are going to be especially difficult on physician practices as other cuts could come into effect, such as a 4% payment cut to Medicare reimbursements under the PAYGO law that mandates cuts if federal spending reaches a certain level. Physicians also must likely brace for the return of a 2% cut to payments that was installed under the sequester. The cut has been put on pause for more than a year due to the pandemic, but lawmakers seek to use it as a pay-for in a bipartisan infrastructure bill expected to be considered in the House later this month.

RE: OIG Files False Claims Act Action Against MCR Advantage Plan

The OIG recently announced a lawsuit alleging violations of the False Claims Act (FCA) regarding MCR Part C plans falsely reporting diagnoses, and thus filing claims which are not substantiated. This is not the first time the U.S. government has taken action for these types of violations. To the best of my knowledge, it is however the first time they are alleging FCA violations.
For those of you who continue to play hardball in providing the collection of diagnoses simply so the Part C plans can be more profitable, I applaud you. For those of you who are still afraid to rebuke the MCR Part C Plans request for info, please reconsider that their continued harassment of our colleagues simply lines their executives' pockets, and perhaps is a violation of the FCA. Until some executives pay a heavy personal price, including prison sentences, the fines levied against these large conglomerates will not dissuade carriers from continuing this practice. And this is all at the taxpayers (our) expense. Makes you wonder, MCR Advantage? To whom? Not the policyholder, provider, and taxpayer. Advantage: Insurance Carrier and their 6 or 7 figure salaried executives.
It's time to support the OIG in their quest to obtain a FCA violation against the MCR Advantage Carriers and perhaps to reconsider fueling their pockets by simply rolling over and providing the requested data without a fight. For more, read here.
