PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
GA Podiatrist Discusses Onychomycosis

It's an ugly problem many people don't want to talk about. But while nail fungus might not be at the top of your list of health concerns, it will be if it affects you. Nail fungus causes visual changes in the nail, and it's contagious. "Nail fungus is caused by dermatophytes - fungi that affect the skin and nail," podiatric surgeon Dr. Dane Ulett said. "Fungi are found everywhere. You'll see thickening of the nails; the nail will discolor. It will be yellow or black. Sometimes the nail will loosen - it lifts up from the nail bed."

Dr. Dane Ulett

Ulett said it's common for people with nail fungus to feel pain as a result of the infection. But it's treatable and preventable. Anyone can get the fungus, but athletes, the elderly, and diabetics are at a higher risk.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Tactic of Sliding in Tennis Poses Potential Problems: MD Podiatrist

It's a modern tennis phenomenon which has left many fans questioning the quality of the grip on players' shoes. But a new study suggests skidding across the court to reach shots is an intentional technique practiced by the top five male players in the world. After analyzing hours of matches from the Australian and U.S. Open, a team of scientists says the tactic is regularly used as it's quicker than running and allows players to change direction sooner.

Dr. Alex Kor

Dr. Alex Kor, a Maryland-based podiatrist and nationally-ranked senior tennis player, told Inside Science: "For the most part, I think sliding on a hard court, unless somebody grew up with it, can result in injury. It's not for the recreational player. Unless you are very well adept at it, you are going to end up with an injury, an ankle sprain, an ankle fracture."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Proper Shoe Sizing Key for Toddlers: PA Podiatrist

Toddlers are always moving and exploring the new world around them. In fact, if you tried to walk a mile in their shoes, you'd probably be ready for a nap time by noon. Since toddlers are extra active, finding the right pair of supportive shoes for them is an absolute must. That's why the best shoes for toddlers fit correctly and are highly functional, says Dr. Nick Pagano, a pediatric podiatrist with his own practice, Barking Dogs Foot and Ankle Care, and the father of a 3- and 1-year-old.
Dr. Nick Pagano

Dr. Pagano says the first thing a parent should do is have their child professionally fitted a few times a year. "It's incredible how fast their feet size can grow at these ages," he says. "You don't want them to be in too small of a shoe to constrict their growth, and you don't want them in too big of a shoe because they're still working on balance."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Evaluating Six Electronic Patient Engagement Tools - Part 1

1. Patient Portals

Pro: Every physician participating in meaningful use has to set one up.

Con: A patient, especially one with co-morbid conditions, might see multiple physicians, which means separate portals, log-ins, and passwords at each physician's office. That could be burdensome for the patient.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From:  Carla-Ruth Poma

I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. DeTrano and his point of view. You need to find a service that you can work with, not just bill claims; one that takes a personal approach to your particular needs and listens to your concerns. I have been providing medical billing services for over 25 years nationwide to podiatrists. Pricing is always a concern. Find a company that provides all the services for a fair price that you are comfortable with. I agree that a local service has many advantages, but technology today allows for visual meetings on a monthly basis and a face-to- face meeting every 6 months or so. The service should always be available by phone during regular hours that your office keeps and by appointment beyond those hours.

Remember that a larger service may not be the best. You can end up being the small fish in the big pond. Smaller services offer the one-on-one attention your practice deserves.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Michael Forman, DPM, Bill Beaton, DPM

I highly recommend Paul Fehring at Doctors Central Billing in Fairfield, Ohio. They are a first class operation.

Michael Forman, DPM, Cleveland, OH

I have been using e-Professional Technologies for several years. They put my claims through right away and, most importantly, they follow up on denials. They help our office verify eligibility in advance and keep us up-to-date on any coding changes. They have worked with podiatrists all over the country and stay apprised of all LCDs and edits. They specialize in helping practices avoid penalties. I have been ready for ICD-10 for months and I didn't have to worry. They are located in Florida, but have worked with podiatrists in many states.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

There's something fishy about this shoe!

This shoe is inspired by the mermaid who has always attracted the attention of people from many different fields of art. The mermaid widely presents human life. These shoes honor its beauty and mystery.
