OH Podiatrist Discusses Blisters
“Most blisters are caused by friction between the skin on the foot and the inside of your shoes,” says Allan M. Boike, DPM, a podiatrist at the Cleveland Clinic and the dean of the College of Podiatric Medicine at Kent State University in Ohio. You can prevent blisters — soft pockets of raised skin filled with clear fluid — on your feet by wearing comfortable, appropriate-size shoes and socks. If blisters do develop, it’s best to let them break naturally rather than burst them on your own, even when they are painful and make walking difficult, Dr. Boike says.

“If you develop a blister, simply cover it with a bandage and allow it to burst naturally,” Boike says. “If it bursts, you can apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment with a bandage to help it heal and prevent infection, but you should keep the area covered to reduce friction and keep it from reforming.”

Car Sales Are Booming Amid Pandemic: NJ Podiatrist
Car sales are going through the roof during the pandemic, as people stuck inside search for access to greener pastures and a safer way to get around. Tom Maoli owns a Lexus dealership in New Jersey, and said that he can’t keep up with the demand. Zena Pattiello, DPM said, in her case, restrictions on traveling overseas enticed her into buying a new car.

“I was going to Japan, Peru, and Italy, which have all been cancelled because of COVID. So I had some extra money, and I decided that I was going to get a brand new car,” Pattielo said. Now the podiatrist commutes between home and her medical office. “Having a new car, you know that you’ve been the only one in it — COVID free,” she said.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Reasons Why Telemedicine is Here to Stay Long After the Pandemic
Telemedicine is more than a splash in the proverbial healthcare plan. Here are five primary reasons why telemedicine will continue to gain adoption and become a staple of modern-day patient care.
1. Patient Demand: It has become clear that, when given the option, patients often prefer virtual visits with their doctors. It’s convenient and delivers quicker access to their care providers. In fact, according to a study by The American Journal of Managed Care, telemedicine, by a clear margin, has fast become patients’ preferred approach when compared to traditional office visits. As doctors look for ways to refine and improve the patient experience, telemedicine will represent a critical part of the mix to keep aligned with this growing trend and patient preference.

| QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) | |
Query: Transverse Plane Hammertoe Correction
A patient presented with progressive worsening bilateral hammertoes over the last year without trauma. Her pain is mostly isolated to the PIP joints of the affected toes from shoe pressure and rubbing between the overlapping 3rd/4th toes. I tested her for RA which was negative. She has a significant (+) Lachman's test at the bilateral 2nd/3rd MTP joints and mild claw toe deformities with major abduction (up to 35 degrees) of the affected toes.
|
|
Transverse Plane Hammertoes |
She would like to pursue surgical correction of this. In the past, I have found correcting transverse lesser toe deformities like this very challenging with a high rate of recurrence. I am hesitant to fuse a lesser MPJ. Any surgical pearls? Also, any theories why this type of deformity occurs?

Query: National Precious Metals
Has anyone dealt with National Precious Metals? If so, what has been your experience? They buy x-rays for their silver content.

RE: Source for Phenol? (Jane E. Graebner, DPM)
From: Mark Stempler, DPM, Jim Ricketti, DPM
I recently bought a large bottle of phenol only to find out that it is not considered medical grade. I then ordered a large bottle from Schein Medical.
Mark Stempler, DPM, Staten Island, NY
Why is anyone not using my Phenol EZ Swabs for P&As? A bottle of phenol does not last, and the cost versus the ease of Pheno EZ Swabs are a no-brainer.
Disclosure: I am the inventor of the Swabs

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Steven R Kravitz, DPM
There's no doubt that the virtual Zoom-type meetings have replaced relatively well the previous live presentations that were standard prior to the COVID-19. Going forward it's my suspicion, as a meeting planner as well as a lecturer, that some form of virtual continuing education will continue after the COVID-19 crisis. There are definite advantages to these venues as pointed out in the article by Dr. Udell.
However, I also strongly suspect that live conferences will return. There's a difference when watching a theatrical performance that's recorded live even when...
Editor's note: Dr. Kravitz's extended-length letter can be read here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) | |
From: Mark Spier, DPM
I read with interest the article about Ira Meyers, DPM using first-hand knowledge to treat runners in his Pennsylvania office. That's terrific, but what's more impressive is that Dr. Meyers ran a 2:22 marathon in an Olympic qualifier, just barely missing a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, as well as other distances in world-class times. Kudos to Dr. Meyers, arguably the world's fastest podiatrist!
