PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
MA Podiatrist Provides Back-to-School Shoe-Buying Tips

Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, president of the American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics appeared on Mass Appeal (NBC) to give tips to parents on back to school shoe shopping. Dr. DeCaro also talked about how important it is to see your podiatrist when parents notice odd wear patterns on shoes. He spoke about how this leads to important diagnoses of things such as hyperpronation, flatfeet, asymmetries, and rotational abnormalities.

Dr. Louis DeCaro

According to Dr. DeCaro, “Shopping for shoes at the end of the day is really important. Especially if you are buying athletic shoes that will be worn in end of the day sports. Even kids' feet swell and having proper fitting shoes is very important.” He also talked about the importance of tying shoes well. “Shoes that are loose on the foot, especially in sports, can lead to a multitude of injuries from the foot moving all around in the shoe. This is especially true when a child wears an orthotic in their shoe - since in order for the orthotic to work, it needs to be well aligned with the foot at all times,” said DeCaro.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Telehealth vs. Telewealth: Six Steps to Ensure Your Future

Your success or lack thereof will rest upon patient loyalty. Here are six steps to take:

5. Measure and share your quality scores. This could be a key differentiator, especially if your scores are consistently in the top quintile or decile. It’s peace of mind for a patient knowing their doctor is at the top.

RE: OTC Orthotics Problematic for Patients
From: Jordan Stewart, DPM

Over the counter orthotics have been a source of problems for patients in our area. I posted this video on my YouTube channel of patients seeking expensive treatments, $1,500 and $1,800, for over-the-counter orthotics without any significant improvement.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Commercials for Orthotic Socks
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM,

For the last few days, I’ve been bombarded with TV and radio advertisements for orthotic socks. Really, is nobody complaining? Unless some have changed, orthotics were a medical device and arch supports were not.

This is something our profession should call to the attention of government agencies. When I was president of ACFAOM (now ACPM), I often sent letters and had our attorneys draft documents when some company encroached on our profession.  What do others think?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3A
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

The two letters from Drs. Chaskin and Name Withheld (FL) regarding the “In-Person Requirement for CE?” were usefully provocative and raise interesting points. I fail to see what is better or more desirable in general about live delivered lectures as far as their educational impact and professional improvement effectiveness. In general, the ability to view on-demand lectures in portions and at times most suitable to the learner’s attention, and the ability to rewind and review sections, makes them a more effective education experience. I ask PM News readers – how much live TV do you watch? For me, it is only sports, as I am more “entertained” by the excitement of it being live. Everything else, I record and watch on demand. Why are we dealing with CME lectures differently?

Yes, lectures by our favorite teachers can be entertaining for some of us and I do enjoy and appreciate the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3B
From: Steven Kravitz, DPM

The Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing has run virtual meetings for the past two years and doing the same this year. I'm not aware of any of the CME credits that have not been accepted by any state in the country for podiatrists, allopathic physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, etc.

As an added level of comfort, we use an independent agency that provides credit for medical meetings around the country for conferences in all fields of medicine. Do not accept that "the stated number of CMEs" from any conference provider are valid if the appropriate accreditation statement is not listed on the conference website or in the program.

Podiatrists should make sure that any conference they attend meets the standards for CME accreditation from the appropriate oversight agencies. If it’s only a podiatry meeting, that would be CPME. The CE official accreditation statement should be on their conference information and clearly stated. If you have further questions, the ultimate answers should come from your state licensing board.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

I must debate Dr. Splichal on her recent highlight on PM News. Her posts continue to reflect personal bias regarding biomechanics and human movement. Dr. Splichal is a consultant to Nike and Apex shoes and Barefoot Science Orthotics and has her own vibration devices, mats and inserts that are not natural. She calls herself a "natural" podiatrist, but for me, natural should read “uncivilized”. She shows pictures of us on grass, dirt paths, and beach sand, and denies the 15,000 years of adaptation to paved roads, clustered homes, and a civilized lifestyle that have been so necessary, including shoes.

She suggests that we are better off allowing our forefoot to spread; that our toes are major balancers of our feet (not) and that if we are barefooted while active some part of the day, many of our woes and ills would be cured. Hopefully, she can give us references to back up her "natural" claims here.
