In-Person Requirement for CE? (Daniel Chaskin, DPM)
The two letters from Drs. Chaskin and Name Withheld (FL) regarding the “In-Person Requirement for CE?” were usefully provocative and raise interesting points. I fail to see what is better or more desirable in general about live delivered lectures as far as their educational impact and professional improvement effectiveness. In general, the ability to view on-demand lectures in portions and at times most suitable to the learner’s attention, and the ability to rewind and review sections, makes them a more effective education experience. I ask PM News readers – how much live TV do you watch? For me, it is only sports, as I am more “entertained” by the excitement of it being live. Everything else, I record and watch on demand. Why are we dealing with CME lectures differently? Yes, lectures by our favorite teachers can be entertaining for some of us and I do enjoy and appreciate the “excitement” factor in attending live lectures, whether streamed into my home or in- person and certainly a live Q&A session allows us all to learn from others’ questions. But we are professionals and should not be required to attend live lectures like school children, in the 21st century. There is diversity in the nationwide community of podiatrists as far as learning style and personal preference and I think that we should provide for that diversity by allowing free choice in how we fulfill all of our CME requirement. We should all examine the parties in power making this requirement and question whether the distinction being made between recorded on-demand CME lectures and delivered live lectures is partisan and self-serving. We at PRESENT offer all forms of CME, live in-person and virtual conferences, as well as on-demand lectures and allow our customers choose which forms they use.
