Foot Dysfunction Can Lead to Knee, Hip, and Back Problems: NY Podiatrist
You have probably read plenty of studies on the importance of sitting correctly. However, we don’t hear nearly as much about the importance of walking correctly, even though the consequences of walking abnormalities are just as serious. Rheumatologists, chiropractors and podiatrists all agree that a poor gait can lead to back pain.
|
Dr. George Trachtenberg |
George C. Trachtenberg, DPM writes that these problems can be chronic if not addressed. “Indeed, foot dysfunction may be the etiology or a contributing factor in many pathological conditions, including those affecting the back, hips, and knees as well as other joints, bones, and muscles. As a result of these postural changes, there is subsequent redistribution of ground reactive forces and the forces altered and redirected via compensations and the repetitive movements involved in gait.”

Physicians Footcare Adds ID Podiatrist
Physicians Footcare has added Muhammad Ansari, DPM to its staff. Ansari received his medical degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and completed his three-year residency training at NYCPM/Metropolitan, located in Harlem and the South Bronx, where he trained alongside some of the top attending foot and ankle surgeons in New York City.

NY Podiatrist Flees NYC for Suburbs
Since the pandemic began, the suburbs around New York City, from New Jersey to Westchester County to Connecticut to Long Island, have been experiencing enormous demand for homes of all prices, a surge that is unlike any in recent memory, according to officials, real estate agents, and residents. That is how Rehana Alam and Sadi Alam, DPM feel. They live with their three children — ages 9, 7, and 4 — in a home they own in Jamaica, Queens. It is a 15-minute commute for Dr. Alam, a podiatrist, to get to work. But the Alams have been concerned that their children have been largely confined to their home during the pandemic.
|
Dr. Sadi Alam |
Over the summer, the couple decided to get more indoor and outdoor space for their children. On Wednesday, they closed on a five-bedroom house with a pool on two acres in Dix Hills, Long Island, about 30 miles east of Queens. “The best thing I could have done was provided them more space,” Ms. Alam, 35, said. “Looking at their sad faces, it just wasn’t worth staying in Queens.”

AR Podiatrist Supports Effort to Send Black Lawmaker to Congress
The state of Arkansas has never sent a Black lawmaker to Congress. If state Sen. Joyce Elliott were to win her race for Arkansas’s 2nd Congressional District, that would change. As a former English teacher, she recognizes that words are powerful,” Rev. Anika Whitfield, DPM said, “and that the words that are written in the preamble of the Constitution have never been realized for people who look like her and myself.”
|
Dr. Anika Whitfield |
Dr. Whitfield is one of the most visible activists pushing for change in the Little Rock School District in recent years. In 2015, the state Board of Education took control of the LRSD on the basis that six of the district’s 48 schools were in “academic distress.” Since then, a coalition of groups have pushed for restoration of local control. Whitfield, who works as a podiatrist at CHI St. Vincent, co-chairs a group called Grassroots Arkansas, founded in June 2017 in response to the takeover. She says Elliott was “boots on the ground, Day One.”

CMS Delays Changes to Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Regulation
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is delaying the publication of a final rule aimed at changing an anti-kickback regulation and making adjustments to Stark Law regulations until August 2021. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is delaying the publication of a final rule aimed at changing an anti-kickback regulation and making adjustments to Stark Law regulations until August 2021.
CMS says the new rule would create permanent exceptions in the law for value-based arrangements, citing a 2018 request for information which showed industry stakeholders felt the steep consequences of not complying with the Stark Law are so dire that doctors and other providers are discouraged from entering into arrangements that improve quality, increase efficiency, and lower costs. The new rule would also provide much-needed guidance on several key requirements that must be met so that physicians and providers can comply with the Stark Law.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Considerations for Integrating Medical Transcriptions into Your Practice - Part 3
If you too are looking at leveraging transcription to streamline the operations of your practice, here are a few crucial considerations that will help you make an informed decision:
3) Spell out Everything in your Contractual Terms - It is important to comprehend what to expect from a third-party service and at what cost, when carrying out negotiations. Start by building quality metrics into the contract. It needs to be a tiered approach with percentages for everything clearly laid down. As per industry standards, practices ideally shoot for 98% accuracy for major errors. Minor errors are usually acceptable, so long as they are just typos or other less important things.
You can enforce the target metrics by negotiating some penalties for when the transcription service provider demonstrates poor service and incentives for when the company delivers exceptional service. Make those quality-control metrics grounded in statistics and trackable, so that you can easily cross-check with the transcribed reports you have on record.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: Dale Feinberg, DPM
As Dr. Sherman pointed out, in the future, online conferences will have no travel costs associated with them. Since the principals will not have associated costs to produce the seminars, I expect the costs of their seminars should be reduced by at least 50%. We will all remain safe and the monies we all save can be spent when everything opens up again at the bar.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART2 |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
I’d like to clarify what podiatrists’ choices are in this Intra-COVID world for earning CME and how each one works. Online CME comes as (1) live streamed scheduled programs and (2) “enduring media” recorded on-demand programs. The Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) regulates how podiatrists earn CME for each of these formats. In the case of programs that are run live, the CPME regulations are the same whether in-person at a live conference or streamed online using Zoom or other streaming services. For these formats, CPME requires verification of attendance in some manner to earn your CME.
Generally, it’s by the reporting done by the platform as to how many minutes the DPM was “connected” to the program or an attendance verification, where the DPM responds to a poll to confirm that they are watching the lectures,...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) |
From: Neil Barney, DPM
With all due respect to Dr. Bass, I have been told by another well known national coder that the use of Q8 is not only unnecessary with CPT 11721 (or 11720) but inappropriate as the criteria has nothing to do with the necessary documentation for the said codes. Comments?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Jeffrey D. Lehrman, DPM
Jim shared three concerns. I will take these one at a time.
1. Device needs to be “medical device” category by FDA
Page 43 of the 2020 CPT® Professional book states (directly copied and pasted): "the device used "must be a medical device as defined by the FDA.” CMS has stated the same thing in a bunch of places, but to save space, I will only provide the most recent. In the CY 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule, just released earlier this month, on page 130, they state: (directly copied and pasted):
For CY 2021, we are clarifying how...
