MD Podiatrist Discusses Recovery Sandals
You might be wondering after buying a nice pair of running shoes, are recovery sandals another must-purchase for runners? “Recovery sandals are definitely much better than slipping into your run-of-the-mill flip-flop,” says Priya Parthasarathy, DPM a member podiatrist and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association. “They usually provide more cushion and support than a regular sandal.”
|
Dr. Priya Parthasarathy |
There is some research, often put out by shoe brands, that shows that recovery sandals reduce some pressure and demand on feet and joints after exercise. There are other ways to help your feet recover after a long run or race. “Stretch or foam roll so you are ready for your next run,” says Dr. Parthasarathy.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2 |
SC Podiatrist Challenges Decision Not to Renew Hospital's President
Some community members, including doctors, want to know why the Regional Medical Center’s trustees did not renew the contract of the hospital’s president and chief executive officer. "It is the concern of the general public whether the RMC Board of Trustees is responsible, equitable and researched in its decision-making," Orangeburg podiatrist Kevin Ray, DPM wrote in an Aug. 19 letter to the RMC board chairman.
|
Dr. Kevin Ray |
"The county councils of Orangeburg and Calhoun are tasked with overseeing the BOT and the citizens of these counties are charged with holding the BOT and county councils accountable for the health and wealth of our primary provider of health care, Regional Medical Center,” the letter said. Dr. Ray says he’s seeking transparency from the board on behalf of the concerned citizens of Orangeburg, Calhoun, and Bamberg counties

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Considerations for Integrating Medical Transcriptions into Your Practice - Part 2
If you too are looking at leveraging transcription to streamline the operations of your practice, here are a few crucial considerations that will help you make an informed decision:
2) Take Legal and Regulatory Considerations into Account - Another important consideration for integrating medical transcription within your practice is ensuring that the provider knows the importance of maintaining compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This ensures that all security protocols and policies are in place during each phase of transcription. While using a combination of sophisticated software, innovative products, and experienced personnel, a HIPAA-compliant transcription service provider can furnish robust security to Protected Health Information (PHI) for the practice. This eventually affords administrators the ability to focus on their core activities.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Nursing Home Billing
I’ve just recently started seeing a few nursing home patients and I’m new to the billing side of things. I recently billed an E/M 99304 and CPT 11721 (with a Q8 modifier) for nail debridement in a new patient. I was notified the E/M 99304 wasn’t allowed, citing contractual obligation -97 (“the benefit for this service is included in the payment/allowance for another service/procedure that has already been adjudicated”). Am I doing something wrong?
D.S., Claremont, CA
Response: Most likely it is the way you are billing and are missing modifiers. That is why the CPT 11721 was lumped into the E/M 99304.
I would bill it the following way (with the appropriate diagnoses attached)
E/M 99304 -25
CPT 11721 -Q8,-59

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
There is no question that live conferences are going to be very hard to find for the rest of 2020 and, most likely, before next summer; and that most, if not all, CME will have to be done online. All podiatrists should lobby their state boards and associations to allow all their CME to be earned online sooner rather than later. We at PRESENT just ran an experimental scaled down “safe meeting” in NJ, this year’s Superbones Superwounds East 2020, and it was attended by 85 (down from 400 in 2019) and almost all attendees told us on the exit survey that they felt safe and would attend another such meeting if we ran one.
But we’ve decided to run all our fall meetings, the ResEdSummit, Superbones West and Desert Foot as live streaming events. Why? Because...
Editor's note: Dr. Sherman's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Dock Dockery, DPM
After running several 3-day full length continuing medical education webinars this year with the International Foot & Ankle Foundation, I can’t tell you how many podiatrists recently have whined about the fact that they have to sit through hours of virtual lectures, or how hard it is if they still have patients to see, or that it is difficult to get up early or stay up late (due to time zone differences), or why can’t they just pay and get the CME hours without having to attend the sessions.
I realize that virtual medical meetings are different from the live ones that we’ve always known. I also know that many doctors sign up for the educational meetings and then spend most of their time in the exhibit hall, out in the corridors visiting with friends, or by the pool or beach, or even in the meeting facility restaurants and bars (and they still get their CME hours). So, it is difficult for meeting planners, like me, to make everyone happy, or satisfy all requests for certain time zones or even to just let everyone pick and choose the topic, time, and lack of monitoring that they want.
For now, I recommend picking the online meeting that you want, schedule the appropriate time out from the office or family, attend the virtual meeting, and try to learn something new. Hopefully, next year, it will be back to more normal and you can attend live meetings again.
Dock Dockery, DPM, Seattle, WA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH
Dr. Stephen Epstein has a good idea... why not allow the taped version of a conference to be accessed online anytime for CME credits?
For us who sleep eat and breathe podiatry, we need afterhours and weekend access.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Jim Collins
I just read the August 2020 Podiatry Management article written by Dr. Jeffrey Lehrman. I'm writing to kindly request supporting documentation for statements on the second page. The bottom portion of the first and second column suggests that devices need to be designated the status of medical device by the FDA, that they must have a HCPCS code with payment rates assigned, and that they must be validated by randomized controlled trials. I have not seen any of these standards shared by anybody else and I have not seen them in any of the written guidance issued by CMS, the AMA, or the MACs.
The definitions of the codes specifically list weight and blood pressure as examples of physiologic data. Weight scales and blood pressure cuffs are the predominant way to measure these physiologic parameters. These pieces of equipment have not been designed as medical devices by the FDA, there are no associated HCPCS codes, they do not have designated reimbursement amounts, and there are no randomized controlled trials focused on these two pieces of equipment.
