Canadian Students Complete Studies at NYCPM
Seven senior students from the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières (UQTR) spent eight elective weeks at NYCPM beginning in early June, focusing on podiatric imaging, podopediatrics, and podiatric medicine and surgery. This cohort was more than twice as large as the winter group. These students will next have relatively brief externships (in Canada), receive their DPM degrees from UQTR, and then can proceed to practice in Québec province.

Front row (L-R): Virginie Lamothe, Stéphanie Vallée, Kimberly Fortin. Back row (L-R): Dr. Michael Trepal, Louis Levine, Dr. Stephanie Maurais, Paryse Mayhew, Anoushka Nadeau-Gagné, Austin Lee, and Alexandre Assi. |
At the luncheon in their honor, Michael J. Trepal, DPM, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean, said that President and CEO Louis L. Levine had mandated international collaboration at NYCPM, and the collaboration with UQTR began 27 years ago. Mr. Levine said that “the collaboration with UQTR was an experiment at first, because of attitudes that did not see podiatry as a medical profession. The world needs DPMs, with the knowledge of an established medical profession.”

IN Podiatrist Organizes Event ‘For Son's Final Journey Home’
Immediately after Paul Sommer, DPM finished swimming, biking, and running in a sprint triathlon at Rogers-Lakewood Park in Valparaiso, he knelt down to hug 10-year-old Kyle Polhemus, who was born with a severe form of muscular dystrophy and whom he hauled throughout the entire race. Despite being a veteran of dozens of triathlons, mini triathlons, and ironman competitions, Sommer has a medical history of tachycardia, or racing of the heart. On that hot summer day in 2011, it kicked in again. Eventually, but dramatically, Sommer completed “Kyle's Triathlon Challenge” to raise thousands of dollars for needed upgrades at Kyle’s home, including a wheelchair lift for the family’s van.
|
|
Dr. Paul Sommer and Kyle Polhemus |
Kyle, who’s now 18 and a recent graduate of Valparaiso High School has recently deteriorated and is life-threatened. Dr. Sommer, a podiatrist, has created a fundraiser called “Kyle’s Victory Challenge,” by attempting to swim 3.6 miles in Shorewood Lake to raise donations for Kyle’s end-of-life expenses, and his family’s mission to launch a foundation in Kyle’s name to assist families of children with similar disabilities. “When I carried Kyle through a triathlon eight years ago, there was a great outpouring of love and support,” Sommer said. “Now the need is much greater. They will need money for the final journey home.”

IL Podiatrist Publishes Book on Opting Out of Insurance Plans
Best Seller Publishing has announced the release of TJ Ahn, DPM’s new book, Opt-Out: How to Take Back Financial Control of Your Private Clinical Practice Without the Hassle of Insurance Companies. Dr. TJ Ahn, a Korean-born podiatrist, enrolled in podiatry school, inspired by the “Golden Era” of private practice surgery. Fast forward 15 years, and Ahn found himself in a completely different economic landscape fighting off monstrous waves of insurance-driven rules, regulations, paperwork, and headaches, leaving him to decide whether a medical career was even possible.
|
|
Dr. TJ Ahn |
This book documents Ahn’s decision to “opt-out” of the traditional insurance-based model in favor of a more profitable, more sustainable, and more patient-focused model that all private practice owners can implement before it’s too late. This is Dr. Ahn’s playbook for success in the modern era of private practice, covering mindset strategies, productivity tips, social media tactics, niche development, influence, and much more.

6 Ways to Improve Your Revenue Cycle Management - Part 4
4. Assess your payer mix from multiple perspectives - Look at the percentage of patients by plan type (e.g., traditional Medicare, Advantage Plans, Medicaid, commercial, and workers’ compensation), then calculate your revenue dollars by plan. This will give you an all-encompassing view of where each payer sits as a percentage of both your business and reimbursement.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
From: Howard Bonenberger, DPM
Over the years, I saw several cases of superficial venous thrombophlebitis, all involving the anterior upper ankle. The vein was easy to palpate, firm, and the condition resolved with warm compresses and APAP or ASA. I also saw soft tissue gout which was more painful than the SVTP. Consider these if the presentation fits.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) | |
From: Carl Solomon, DPM, Allen Jacobs, DPM
One of the absolute worst feelings in the whole world is when you'd give anything not to have done something, and WISH you could turn the clock back. I'm going to grant you that wish! DON'T operate on the bunion with no symptoms. Patients with even the most trivial of post-op problems who were asymptomatic before surgery don't tend to be very happy and will make you miserable.
Carl Solomon, DPM, Dallas, TX
The decision to proceed with elective bunion correction for cosmetic or psychological purposes only, must be made following basic ethical principles similar to those employed for elective cosmetic surgical procedures. The principle of autonomy must be maintained. The patient should desire correction of the deformity absent any manipulation or coercion by the surgeon. The patient should make such a decision with true informed consent. The patient should understand that a painless deformity can become painful following surgery, and that complications can occur which may be gait altering and at times life-altering.
Over the years, I have personally reviewed several malpractice claims in which a patient died of a pulmonary embolism following bunion surgery. While I am not suggesting this is in anyway a common occurrence, the fact is that such complications do occasionally occur. More commonly, patient dissatisfaction following bunion surgery may occur due to pain, stiffness, swelling, delayed or non-union, infection, hardware related problems, or other complications with which the PM News readers are aware. In my opinion, good documentation regarding patient decision and awareness of complications should be in the medical record for elective bunion surgery as would be expected to be present in the medical record for any doctor-patient relationship.
Allen Jacobs, DPM, St. Louis, MO
