EDITOR'S NOTE

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Due to sudden organizational changes conveyed to me yesterday, my 40+ year relationship alongside Kane Communications, Inc. and Podiatry Management Magazine is coming to an end. While the abruptness of this transition was beyond my control, my dedication to serving the podiatric community remains as strong as ever. As Hermine and I chart our next steps—and explore opportunities with new partners, both in digital and print—we will continue publishing independently under the name Podiatric Medical News.

Please bear with us if you notice a few temporary bumps. Most importantly, please note that going forward after this issue, Podiatric Medical News will operate independently and will be unaffiliated with Podiatry Management Magazine, Podiatry Management Online, or Kane Communications, Inc. Thank you to our readers and advertisers for your continued support, trust, and loyalty as we evolve!

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
PA Podiatrist Discusses Blisters

Blisters are fluid-filled sacs that form underneath the skin’s surface, says Hartzell. They’re usually caused by something repeatedly rubbing against and creating friction with your skin, like a pair of shoes. You can get blisters anywhere on the body, but they most commonly occur on the feet and hands, says Maryann Hartzell, DPM, the medical director of the Foot and Ankle Institute at Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Maryann Hartzell

Whatever you do, don’t pop your blister. Cover the blister with a bandage.Try to buy a box that comes with at least 14 bandages since blisters can take a week or two to heal, and you’ll need to change the bandage at least once a day, says Dr. Hartzell.

PODIATRIC SUPERGROUPS IN THE NEWS
Upperline Acquired by NJ Podiatry Practice

New Jersey becomes the 15th state in Upperline's podiatry footprint as the company deepens its commitment to accessible, high-quality foot and ankle care. Upperline Health announced the acquisition of New Jersey-based Port Richmond Family Foot Care (d/b/a Mount Holly Family Footcare), effective July 29, 2026.

Dr. Steven Spivak

“The addition of Port Richmond Family Foot Care, led by Steven Spivak, DPM increases our presence in New Jersey and adds a strong practice to both Upperline and to the patients we serve," said Michael King, DPM, Chief Medical Officer, Podiatry, Upperline Health.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
9 Ways to Tighten Patient Collections at Your Practice

Patients are increasingly primary payers. Nine front-end moves to keep balances from sliding into bad debt.

8. Send statements patients can actually read

Patient confusion is one of the most common reasons bills go unpaid. A statement that mixes dates of service, line-item charges, adjustments, prior payments, and insurance terminology in dense print pushes patients to set it aside. Strip the statement to what the patient needs in order to act: who the visit was with, what they owe, why they owe it in plain language and the fastest way to pay.

Add a clearly visible phone number and a QR code or short URL that lands on a payment page rather than a portal login. Audit your own statement by handing it to someone outside healthcare and watching what they do with it. Statements written for billers are read by no one.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)

Query:  Standard of Care for Post-op Nail Matrixectomies

I would like to see if there is any thought on whether or not we should be making a follow-up/post-op appointment for nail matrixectomies (CPT 11750). I have partners who do not make any appointments for post-surgical follow-up.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENT)
RE: CMS Newsroom & Private Equity Companies
From: Farshid Nejad, DPM

Those who need to be in the know and have subscribed to the free emails from CMS probably have already seen that there are pay increases for everyone except physician services. This week, they released two more news articles reporting that hospice and inpatient rehab facilities will get a pay increase. This was on top of all the other news releases that most everyone except physicians are getting pay increases. FOR THOSE PRIVATE EQUITY(PE) GROUPS and our ASSOCIATIONS - money should be spent on bringing a strong lobby like these other groups to increase physician reimbursement.

We are losing great candidates for our medical schools because the writing is on the wall, WE ARE TOO SOFT ON PAYERS. Everyone wants school enrollment to increase, so work to create news that physician pay is increasing. At the end of the day, if this isn’t fixed. Everyone loses….including the PE companies buying practices.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT ENROLLMENT)
RE: Medical School Preparation Programs + Letter to APMA President
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

There is a relatively new service being offered by several services that prepare a student to apply to medical school. Some of them are engineered to begin the preparation for medical school from day one of the undergraduate college experience. They offer one-on-one advice to the 18 year old and advise him or her on everything you can think of to make the undergraduate student more desirable to medical schools when the application process gets into full swing.

For example, it tells the student what college within each university to enroll in as a pre-med student, how to stage scheduling of science courses, what electives to take, taking difficult heavily weighed classes like organic chemistry over the summer so the student can devote full time to one course whether to take calculus required physics or non-calculus physics. Should  the student take courses in ...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

I was saddened to see the article announcing the passing of Dr. Helfand. From June 1975 until May 1976, Dr. Helfand was my director of residency at St. Luke’s and Children’s Hospital Philadelphia. He gave all his residents great advice and was always ready to listen to the newest podiatrists to our profession.

Joseph Sidone, DPM

I was saddened to learn of Arthur's passing. I worked with him at PCPM for many years; he was a tireless champion of podiatric public health and a very prolific healthcare writer for the profession while at PCPM. He was the consummate gentleman. He served the profession with rare enthusiasm, hard work, and honor. RIP Arthur.

RE: The Passing of Arthur Ervin Helfand, DPM

Very simply, Arthur Helfand was a mensch! May his memory be for blessings.

Arden Smith, DPM

Arthur Helfand DPM, was a legend long before there was such a field called podiatric medicine and surgery. Art was a chiropodist by training and if it wasn’t for Arthur, I would never had applied to the Giuffre College of Podiatry at St. Luke’s Hospital. I was in the First class of what became the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He along with Jim Bates, DSC assured me that we would graduate as podiatrists, and a new day was arising from the ashes of Temple University College of Chiropody.

Art was smart, a graduate of Central High in Philly, that had more Mensa people come out of that high school than most. He was a passionate, caring human being. Always pushing students to do better. Through his close relationship with...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1C

RE: The Passing of Arthur Ervin Helfand, DPM

I am deeply saddened hearing the news of the passing of Arthur Helfand. He was both a mentor and friend over many years. He brought our profession to a higher standard in the medical community in the 1960s and '70s. He was instrumental in guiding and encouraging me to apply to the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. I was the first podiatrist who was accepted for an MPH degree when only medical doctors, dentists, and nurses were accepted there.

He gave me the opportunity to open up our profession to a higher standard of acceptance throughout the medical community. An MPH degree for podiatrists is now encouraged and sought after by many graduates, becoming part of the mainstream healthcare community.

My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1D

RE: The Passing of Arthur Ervin Helfand, DPM

The profession lost one of its greats. Unfortunately, many of the younger podiatrists likely never knew him or even heard of him. Dr. Helfand was also my teacher. I still remember his “hey Doc” salutations, his slight smile, his love of teaching. He was one of our professions’ leaders. He was a critical part of the St Luke's Residency in Philadelphia. He was one of the first podiatrists to enter the hallowed halls of allopathic medicine in Philadelphia. Truly a pioneer. He was one of the luminaries of our profession. He was always around other bigger-than-life podiatrists such as Dr. Irv Kanat.

One personal story. When I graduated Temple, my first job was at the VA in Washington, DC. Out of the blue comes a letter from Dr. Helfand. He said the APMA attorney had a beautiful daughter and I should call her. Well that letter went in my wallet. Several months later, I was cleaning out my wallet and found that letter which I thought I threw away. I was never a big fan of blind dates but decided what the heck!. Well, now 46 years later, that girl still has the same twinkle in her eyes, with plenty of kids and grandkids, all the result of Dr. Helfand. I still have that note.
