OBITUARIES - PART 1
RE: The Passing of Spencer Dubov, DPM
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Spencer Dubov on July 19, 2026 at the Age of 90. Dr. Dubov earned his podiatric medical degree at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in 1960.

"Spence" practiced in Key Gardens and Commack, NY for more than 60 years. He served on the Executive Board of the Queens Division of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association for many years and contributed to professional discussions regarding podiatric medical practice management. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

RE: The Passing of Edward Patrick Smith Jr., DPM
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Edward Patrick Smith, Jr., age 75, on April 5th, 2026. Ed received his doctorate from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. In 1980, Ed, his wife Claudia and their first child, Meghan, moved to Springfield, VT due to a shared love of the mountains and to begin his podiatry practice.

Ed proudly gained surgical privileges at Springfield Hospital, the first podiatrist in Vermont to do so. He served as president of the Vermont Podiatric Medical Board for several terms, as well as holding other executive positions within the organization over the years. Ed was a member of OPEIU (Office and Professional Employees International Union), Local 45. He, working along with VPMA and OPEIU, was instrumental in getting the scope of medical practice expanded for podiatrists in Vermont.

RE: The Passing of Howard "Heshy" J. Kattler, DPM
Dr. Howard J. Kattler, known to just about everyone as “Heshy,” passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the age of 91. He went on to Temple University, where he earned both his undergraduate degree and his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.

He built a long career in podiatry and took real pride in his work, not just in caring for his patients but in being a leader in his profession. Over the years, he stayed active with the Delaware Podiatry State Society and was well known and respected by his colleagues.

RE: The Passing of Gene Osterhouse, DPM
Dr. Gene L. Oosterhouse, age 64, of Jenison, MI passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord on March 13, 2026. For more than 35 years, Gene owned and operated his own podiatry practice. Known affectionately as "Doctor O" to his patients, he was deeply loved by those he cared for and truly loved the community he served. His dedication to helping others extended far beyond his profession and reflected the compassion with which he lived his life.

Gene had a great love for duck hunting and cherished the many adventures he shared with his son, Dayton. He especially enjoyed spending time in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Dr. Kermit (Ted) Roosevelt Ary, 72, of Albany, GA, passed away on December 21, 2025, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after a brave battle with cancer. Dr. Ary earned his podiatric medical degree from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine.

He opened a private practice in 1978 in Leominster, MA, and later became a part of the Fallon Clinic/Reliant Medical Group. His service to his profession was only exceeded by his commitment to his community. He was an active member of the Lions Club International in Westminster, MA, and the Rotary Club in Leominster, MA.

Brett Allan Chicko, DPM, 58, of Fredericksburg, VA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Brett was a standout athlete as a wrestler and football player. He was inducted into the Norwell High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

In 1997, Dr. Chicko began his formal medical training at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earning his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree in 2001. He went on to complete a three-year surgical residency at Crozer-Keystone Health Systems in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Dr. Chicko was board certified in both Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery.

RE: The Passing of William Allen Webber, DPM
Dr. William A. Webber passed away on January 5, 2024 after a series of long illnesses. Bill was a 1966 graduate of the Illinois College of Podiatry. He was a member of the faculty for almost two decades, spending most of his time in the Clinics working to hone the clinical skills of the students (including me). He was a quiet and unassuming doctor, never becoming a household name in our field, but his contributions were many.
Bill and his wife Barbara became close personal friends, and we enjoyed many good times together. As I look back to those days, I remember others who contributed selflessly to student education whose names have been lost by time and poor memory, but whose efforts should never be forgotten.

Flags at Half-Mast in Memory of WV Podiatrist Who Served as State Senator
West Virginia and U.S. flags on Capitol grounds in Charleston and all state-owned facilities in Wayne County are at half-staff in honor of former state Sen. Mack Clarkson Jarrell. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin ordered the flags to be lowered from dawn to dusk on Thursday for the day of services for the veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. The 88-year-old Ceredo native attended Ceredo-Kenova High School until he graduated early to join the Navy as a cadet.

He practiced podiatry and taught at South Point High School. Following his retirement from teaching, he was elected to the West Virginia State Senate, where he served until 1988.

RE: The Passing of Michael J. Valletta, DPM
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine, its administration, faculty, students and staff mourn the passing of our friend, colleague, professor emeritus, and former clinical dean, Dr. Michael Valletta. Mike was a mentor to so many and had a positive impact on the education of an entire generation of DPMs. He was always optimistic even in the face of adversity and consistently demonstrated a can-do mentality. We miss him and send our condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

Mike Valletta and I were classmates. We did our first year residency together at NYCPM. Mike went on to become Dean of Students until his illness, and I had the priviledge of serving as a Clinical Associate Professor during his tenure. He will be missed by all of us.

RE: The Passing of James A. Williamson, Jr. DPM
On April 18th, Dr. James A. Williamson, Jr., 60, died of complications related to renal cell carcinoma. In 1979, Dr. Williamson became the first black member of the North Carolina Foot and Ankle Society, and in 1997 became the first podiatrist on staff at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
