PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS
After 22 Year Lapse, NJ Podiatrist Completes Second Ironman

Dr. Josh White

22 years after last completing an Ironman triathlon, Josh White, DPM, CPed completed another in Lake Placid, NY.  "After volunteering as the podiatry director and working wth many students and residents for the past 16 years, it was thrilling to finally do the race. The first time finishing an Ironman is transformational; to do one at age 53 and 22 years after the last one is affirmational,” said White.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Introducing a New Physician to Your Practice - Part 4

4.  Update insurance company directories

Make sure you notify your contracted insurance companies to provide information about the new physician for both print and online editions of their provider directories. Don't assume it has been done right. Go online yourself to make sure it is accomplished and that it is completely accurate. Social media has become a powerful influence in how patients choose a new doctor and make contact with the practice. The good news is that it's free and can be a boon to practice growth.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: CMS Resource for Codes

Is there a CMS resource which lists approved ICD-10 codes appropriate to match CPT procedure codes? Insurance companies are rejecting some submitted claims based on "Bill diagnosis not related to accepted condition."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM

A question was asked by a DPM, when his/her patient secured an apparently (un-requested) second opinion for severe posterior tibial tendonitis from an orthopedic surgeon. The orthopedic surgeon injected the area (tendon?) with cortisone. Cortisone is rarely injected into the Achilles tendon, even in severe cases of tendonitis, due to fear of weakening and detachment. The DPM quite reasonably asked about comparative "risk" of injection of the PTT with cortisone.

I think there is less fear of traumatic/functional detachment of the PTT than say the Achilles tendon after a cortisone injection, because of the difference in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (HIPAA UPDATE)
From: Steven N. Solomon, DPM, JD,

I just wish to point out that The Joint Commission, which accredits hospitals and other healthcare organizations, has recently put on hold its prior May 2016 announcement to allow secure text messaging in hospitals and other healthcare organizations. The use of text messaging in Joint Commission accredited organizations has been delayed until September 2016.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

Dr. Smith and I look at the ACA differently. I query, “why do people have to get less care, have less money for college, less money for their own medications, and less money for their families” so that insurance company execs can fly in helicopters, wear $2,200 suits and Chinchilla coats, and have their children play baseball with a $400 bat? “I'm not trying to be uncaring,” but why do politicians deserve better healthcare than us and a 20 room home at the expense of my children’s and grandchildren’s education, health, and well-being?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1B
From:  Duane E Kratzer, Jr., DPM

I retired from the VA system 3 years ago and, thank goodness, did not have to deal with the mess perpetrated on the American public known as Obamacare. During the campaign of 2012, Sarah Palin brought up Obamacare death squads, groups who would determine if certain age groups would be able to get treatment for certain conditions, and she was called every name in the book. Last week, I spoke to a woman who is 68 years old. Four years ago, she was diagnosed with uterine and ovarian cancer and received radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, and is now cancer-free. Her doctor told her that she was fortunate that she started treatment before age 65 because if she had started after age 65, he would not, under Obamacare and threat of losing his medical license, be able to continue her medications.

He stated that he would be forbidden to even write for the medication and that the pharmacy would refuse to fill it. As a 67 year old retiree, I think that constitutes a death sentence under Obamacare. "Death squads" do exist and for that failure to protect ALL citizens, I would give Obamacare a great big "F".

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1C
From: David Gurvis, DPM

Dr. Smith asks, "What makes Dr. Adam Siegel, DPM so special?"

I think, between Dr. Siegel and Dr. Smith there is a chasm which will not be bridged. Dr. Siegel has medical needs which, if left unfulfilled, would possibly lead to his disability and inability to work. Dr. Smith is being financially squeezed and wants to keep more of his money, as he feels the ACA insurance Dr. Siegel purchases is taking money away from his own ability to pay his children’s way through college.

What a dilemma. We are back to is asking ourselves, “Is healthcare in America a...
