PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Bunion Surgery is Not a Minor Procedure: TX Podiatrist

According to podiatrist Dr. Ed Davis, a board certified podiatric surgeon with over 25 years of experience, with offices in San Antonio, Texas, "One should not seek surgical treatment for a mild bunion but it is better not to wait until the deformity is severe which may require a larger procedure that takes longer to heal."

Dr. Ed Davis

"Bunion surgery is not a minor procedure so consider it for the right reason. The boney "bump" one sees that looks unsightly and is irritated by footgear can be accommodated by obtaining roomier shoes. Of course, there comes a time when it becomes difficult to find shoes that will fit comfortably and it is time to see the attention of a podiatric surgeon. Pain in the big toe joint itself is a reason for an exam since the misaligned big toe joint can become arthritic. Finally, a big toe that drifts toward the second toe is a reason to consider bunion surgery," says Davis.

New Geisinger residents receive white coats

Residents attended new staff orientation at the Henry Hood Center and were fitted for white coats, signifying their career transition into doctors. Later, they were introduced to the community at a picnic held at Frosty Valley Country Club in Danville. There, 36 area business owners set up tables to introduce the group to the various options for shopping, dining, and leisure activities that are offered in the region.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND HUNANITARIAN EFFORTS
Irish Podiatrist Discusses Her Clinical Experience in Africa

From treating the homeless community in Galway to the Masai of Tanzania, life has already been a busy one for 24-year-old Westport podiatrist, Bria Connolly. The young professional, who recently opened her own podiatry clinic in her native town, was invited to a London conference this month to speak about her clinical experience in Africa. A NUIG graduate, Bria and some colleagues designed a program for the homeless, called "The Gift of Healthy Feet."

Bria Connolly

“The experience I gained was second to none. The real life exposure to these conditions far outweighed any previous clinical skills I had gained from a textbook. In our time in Tanzania, we treated over 300 individuals and saved the lives of three in cases of severe neglect and misdiagnosis.”

10 Keys to Keeping Text Messages Safe - Part 1

Before implementing a secure text messaging approach, leaders from IT, clinical, security, legal and human resources must collaborate to develop policies and procedures ensuring that all processes and technology involved will be effective and secure. Here are 10 ways to get there, based on research by Spok, a vendor that specializes in messaging applications.

1. Eligibility - Define which users are eligible to use secure text messaging based on the clinical workflows in which they are involved.

PHARMACEUTICAL NEWS
FDA Updates Warnings for Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved safety labeling changes for a class of antibiotics, called fluoroquinolones, to enhance warnings about their association with disabling and potentially permanent side-effects and to limit their use in patients with less serious bacterial infections.

Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics that kill or stop the growth of bacteria. While these drugs are effective in treating serious bacterial infections, an FDA safety review found that both oral and injectable fluroquinolones are associated with disabling side-effects involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and the central nervous system. These side-effects can occur hours to weeks after exposure to fluoroquinolones and may potentially be permanent.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Introducing a New Physician to Your Practice - Part 3

3. Share through social media

An often overlooked, important communication channel is social media. Be sure to add the new physician to these outlets. This includes Linked-in, Facebook, and medical review websites such as Vitals and HealthGrades. You'll need to claim your space on these reviews sites and add in the new physician's profile and photo. It's a good time to make sure the listings for all the physicians at your practice are accurate and include photos.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Posterior Tibial Injection

I recently had a patient with an inflamed and painful posterior tibial tendinitis with partial medial column collapse. I treated her with immobilization, wrapping, and bracing. She went to her orthopedist for a second opinion. He gave her a cortisone injection into the tendon at the level of the inflammation. I'm interested in others' thoughts about injecting cortisone into an inflamed tendon such as the P.T. when many of us feel that injecting into the Achilles tendon is not usually done.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Judging the Affordable care Act is akin to going into a fine department store and buying a new suit. Sometimes, the tailor will look at it, shake his head, say "no good," and the clothing goes back on the shelf. In other cases, he may look at it and say, "it is fine but needs to be taken in a bit here or there."

One candidate running for high office feels that the ACA is such a bad "suit" that it needs to be "put back on the shelf" or in another words, repealed. The other candidate believes that the "suit can be tailored" or in other words modified, so as to protect the interests of consumers as well as healthcare providers. In November, the people will decide which "tailor" to choose and what the outcome will be of the ACA suit.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1B
From Gary S Smith, DPM

Adam Siegel, DPM said he gave the ACA an "A" rating because of the benefits it gave him towards his healthcare. He makes a great point of discussion, which really defines the pros and cons of the ACA. There is no doubt that it has provided great benefits to some people, especially people with pre-existing conditions. The other side is that since I am self-employed, the amount I pay for my insurance has doubled. The effect on my practice and also my three sons in college has been noticeable.

All across America, people are not getting the care they need or engaging the healthcare system due to their high deductibles. The average person has to take money out of their tight family budgets to pay the increase in personal healthcare costs due to the ACA. So, really the big question is, Dr. Siegel, What makes you so special? I sympathize with your health concerns but could you please explain why it is mine and every other person in this country's responsibility to pay for your meds? Why do people have to get less care, have less money for college, less money for their own medications, and less money for their families just so you can have a very expensive medication? I'm not trying to be uncaring, but you brought up the analogy, so please explain to us now what makes you so special?
