PODIATRISTS IN SPORTS
FL Podiatrist Completes Rift Gravel Bike Race

Matt Werd, DPM just completed The Rift Gravel Bike Race, which has been dubbed,  “The toughest gravel bike race in the world”. The race course - aka the "Battlefield" - is 200-Kilometer (127 miles) gravel bike race around the most active volcano in Iceland's south coast traversing across sharp washboard volcanic gravel, lava rocks, and sand with steep ascents and descents including five river crossings and a glacier crossing.

Dr. Matthew Werd

The race through the dark lava fields in the highlands of Iceland – takes place on the tectonic split (or Rift) between the North American tectonic plate and Eurasian plate - which separates the country apart by two centimeters every year. The Rift is the ultimate challenge of physical endurance, mental fortitude, and ability to navigate the barest of elements.

MEDICAL ECONOMICS
Podiatrists #30 of Top Paying Jobs

As the scramble to retain employees eases, fewer companies plan to give raises in 2024 compared to 2023. Of all the companies surveyed by Payscale for its 2024 Compensation Best Practices Report, 79% said they would offer salary increases, a drop from 86% and significantly lower than the 92% reported in 2022. In 2024, the average pay increase was also down 0.3 percentage points to 4.5%. Now that employees are no longer in the driver's seat as the job market cools, what jobs are the highest paid in the country? Stacker ranked the 50 highest-paying jobs in America using wage estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, updated in April 2024.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

5 Common Billing Mistakes to Avoid

It’s easy to make small mistakes when billing. Unfortunately, small mistakes can sometimes cost you big money. Fortunately, it might not be as difficult as you think to avoid them. Here are five ways to prevent some of the most common - and costly - billing mistakes.

4. Run an analysis. - If you’re really serious about reducing billing errors, it’s worth the time to analyze your mistakes. EHR systems allow you to customize reports, says Brennan Cantrell, commercial health insurance strategist for the AAFP. "I like to look at high-dollar claims first," he says, to get the most return on his investment of time. Whatever approach you take, make sure you look for any patterns in your mistakes. Are you making a lot of coding errors? Are those coming from billing or from clinical? Spotting your most frequent mistakes can help you set your training priorities.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Student Indebtedness
From: Ira Kraus, DPM

I have been watching this item with particular interest. I think that this is an important opportunity for our colleagues not only to donate themselves through the APMA Educational Foundation, but to also impress upon the companies we support that they need to give back, using PICA as an example, to make a meaningful impact on the lives of our students pursuing careers in podiatric medicine and surgery.

When Talar Medical was founded, we made a commitment to address this issue and we to date have donated $50,000 toward student scholarships. We believe that every contribution can make a difference. However, to effectively combat student debt and promote access to education, we need more companies to join us in this cause.

I encourage you to impress upon the companies you utilize to consider how they can contribute to the APMA Educational Foundation. By donating to this worthy initiative, we can help alleviate the financial burden on students and encourage the next generation of healthcare professionals. Together, we can work toward reducing student indebtedness and fostering a brighter future for those entering the podiatric field.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A
From: Greg Caringi, DPM

I have read this thread with interest. My OCPM classmate and Kern Hospital co-resident, Dr. Eric Lauf, took on this problem and published his research in 1982, "Manual dexterity: its importance in podiatry" (J Am Podiatry Assoc. 1982 Jun;72(6):291-8.). Since Eric passed much too soon (at the age of 47), I will recall this to the best of my ability. Eric had a friend at the Case Western Reserve Dental School. Even then, dental school admissions took spatial relationships and manual dexterity testing seriously. After observing their metrics, Eric tried to apply them to the students at OCPM.

Unlike dentistry, there was a poor correlation in podiatry. His research became of practical use when Eric introduced the use of the Purdue Pegboard Test (a psychomotor test of manual dexterity and bimanual coordination) as part of the screening process in selecting residents at Kern Hospital. I later began using the Purdue Pegboard at Suburban General Hospital when we selected our surgical residents. It became an important part of our selection process. On a personal note, this reminds me how great a loss it was to our profession when we lost Dr. Eric Lauf in 2001.

RESPONSES/COMMENST (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH

I also took the PCAT. I found the spatial relationships portion confusing and a waste of time.  I think if there is a test for hand - eye coordination, that is far more important. I had no idea when I was in podiatry school that I had a gift for doing surgery. I think it is a natural born talent and question how to test for it, but somebody has to know this. Having said that, you do not have to be a surgeon to prosper in our profession. There are plenty of opportunities out there other than surgical.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

So sorry to hear of the passing of Don Barker, one of the first attendings I met when I moved to California for residency. I spent many days in the IR with Don. He also taught me about sushi in the early seventies when we could not eat $10.00 of sushi in those days. I spent picnics at his home with a real Japanese garden and sashimi from fish from San Francisco Bay caught by Don that morning. RIP Don.
