The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 39th Annual Student Writing Competition.
-
All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. (NOT AI generated) Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
-
First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

UK Podiatrist Provides Treatment for Heel Fissures
It's that time of year again, with summer holidays just round the corner. And whether you are planning a staycation or venturing farther afield, warm-weather warnings for sunburn, heat stroke, heat rash, and dehydration apply. But your feet can also pose a major concern. Look around a busy public place in summer and you will be sure to spot some cracked heels. Podiatrist Heather Smart, co-creator of foot-care brand ZeroSole, says, "I see this problem all the time, because people feel so self-conscious about it. It’s more common in summer because sandals do not hold the heel in place properly."

“If this is left for long periods of time, those tiny little cracks can become a lot deeper – and they go into the deep layers of the skin, and that’s when they can be particularly painful. They can even bleed, in some cases, which means you are at greater risk of infection.” The fix: Wear enclosed shoes – even if it means ditching the backless slippers.

David Barton, podiatrist and co-founder of ZeroSole, said: “As we hit warmer weather, many of us opt for summer sandals and flip-flops and are usually more active. Hot weather combined with unsupportive footwear is the perfect storm to develop numerous foot conditions that can be painful or leave us feeling self-conscious.”

"Verrucas grow on the feet and are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Although verrucas look similar to corns, they typically have blood vessels in them which appear as very small black dots right in the center. Verrucas are contagious and can be passed between people by skin contact as well as sock and towel sharing and the floors of damp, public areas such as swimming pools," says Barton.

3. Sweat the small stuff. - Leaving off even one of the required fields in a bill can result in a denial. It’s easy to double-check to make sure you've provided all the required information before submitting the claim. What’s trickier is making sure all the data in those fields is correct. It’s easy to misspell a name or transpose numbers, especially during busy times at the front desk. Despite the hectic pace, it’s worth taking the time to slow down and get this right. Then taking a little more time to double check.

Dr. Donald Barker passed away on July 20, 2024. He was a retired doctor of podiatric medicine. He resided in Atherton, California and was an active member and supporter of the Korean War Memorial Foundation. Don served as a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman from 1950 to 1954.

RE: The Passing of Stanley Schwartz, DPM
Stanley Schwartz, (89) of Wallingford, CT died peacefully in his home on July 20, 2024. He earned his undergraduate degree before pursuing his passion in podiatric medicine at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.
For over four decades, Stanley provided compassionate podiatric care in Wallingford, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched until his retirement. His dedication and expertise earned him the respect and gratitude of countless patients and colleagues alike.

I applied to podiatry school in 1975. At that time, we took the Podiatry College Admission Test (PCAT). It had a section with spatial relationships. The sample test questions gave examples of these problems. I was proud to have that section as my highest achievement score on the test. Since the MCAT doesn't test for that, perhaps a separate spatial relationships test could be given during the interview process.
